Great Ne w Buildings In The Capitol Washington.—Before it is two years old, the Roosevelt administra tion will come int'.> a kingdom of magnificent government buildings. Huge, modern, fire-proof struc tures are rearing their heads eight stories high along Pennsylvania and Constitution avenues. An army of workmen, three or four thousand strong, swarms over the lofty steel skeletons. Rivet guns split the air with the deafening rat-tjit-tat-tat of steel on steel. Great cranes swing ponderously against the sky. All downtown Washington is changed and the old Capitol and Washington Monument look down at these lusty youngsters rising at their feet. A broad area at the base of Capitol Hill is being clear ed of dingy buildings and trans formed into park. Congressmen coming back for the December session hardly know the town. When Uncle Sam builds he builds for the centuries. Into these giant struct ire; goes the best of everything. Yet five of the biggest together wifi cost but $42,300,000, compared to $17,000,000 for the new commer ce Department building alone, completed a little less than a year ago. The difference Is ascribed partly to the change in the level of wages and the price of materials and partly to the use of less showy and expensive fittings. Another reason is that the Com merce Department building is lar ger than any of those now under construction. Three of President-elect Roose velt’s new cabinet members will move into brand new buildings about mid-way in the administra tion, as the structures being erect ed include new homes for the Postoffice, Justice and Labor De partments. The Justice building will cost $12,000,000, Postoffice $10,300, 000, and Labor, together with a separate structure for the Inter state Commerce Commission and a connecting wing, $11,210,000. The postoffice is expected to be completed by August, 1934, and the others soon after. New buildings will house the archives of the Treasury and part of the activities of the Agricul ture department. Up on Capitol Hill is taking shape the new Supreme Court building, for which the corner stone was recently laid by Presi dent Hoover. A new House office building to supplement the old one is about ready for occupancy and the Senate office building is get ting a new wing. To save space and provide great er convenience, the Postoffice, La bor and Interstate Commerce Commission buildings being erect ed between Constitution and Penn sylvania avenues and 11th and 14th streets will form one grear unit, with connecting wings. On a rainy day the Secretary of Labor will be able to walk over to see the Postmaster-General with out getting his feet wet, although he will probably wish he had a bicycle by the time he has traver sed a few hundred feet of corri dors. Gibraltar-like at the side of the new structure is the great gray hulk of the old Postoffice depart ment building. Its days are num • bered, although the difficulty of removing that mountain of stone has prevented any definite plans thus far for tearing it down. In the- "new Washington” which will come into being during the time President Roosevelt is in the White House, the visitor will see a succession of great white public buildings, majegtfic rather than massive, lining broad Con stitution avenue almost from the Capitol to the Potomac. Already may be seen the outlines of this picture, etched in concrete and steel. FATE RELENTS Kinston.—James Wooten, 68, well-known resident of this city, lost the sight of one eye 5 8 ye vs ago. While splitting wood a splinter struck him in the eye. Wooten got along nicely until three or- four years ago. While splitting wood a splinder struck him in the good eye and destroyed the sight. Fate could not have been more ironic, he said. Now Wooten is regaining the use of the eye he thought ruined when he was a boy of 10. A surgeon worked on it, "just for a curiosity,” a few months ago. He operated, and fitted glasses. Wooten discov erea ne couia see a uctie—a very little. The surgeon fitted another pair of glasses. Wooten could see the ground at his feet. With the aid of a cane he could find his wa> about. Treatment was continued. Today he was able to read type smaller than pica. But the eye on which he de pended so many years is hopelessly blind. MAN IS FRIGHTENED TO DEATH IN HOLD-UP Bryanmawr, N. J.—Two man who stole a wallet from William Rugge, of Paulsboro, N. J., also robbed him of life. Ten minutes after the hold-up Rugge was found slumped over the wheel of his car. "I’ve been robbed,” he gasped, then fainted. He died in a hospi tal and doctors, diagnosing the cause as a heart attack, said he was frightened to death.
