Secure Farm Power From Small Streams descending slopes on eitner side oi the two great mountain ranges of this country. North Carolina has a great area where streams flow rapidly and this gives rise to the conditions which permit the devel opment of small water powers. Power from streams depends on the fact that the effect of the weight of the water, falling through space can be harnessed by a variety of devices, particularly the water wheel. Overshot wheels, undershot wheels, turbines and im pulse wheels can be used but aver age farm conditions are such that the overshot wheel is usually the most desirable. Variation in stream flow and the poor estimation of obtainable heads have resulted in many improperly engineering installations giving unsatisfactory service. Before making any expenditures for a dam or for any equipment, the site should be studied in detail and the possible horsepower that can be developed should be esti mated. For large installations the services of an engineer should be secured, but for smaller streams, the preliminary estimates, at least, can be made by the owner of the land. J. Reynolds Tobacco company. The reductioon went into effect at the opening of business January 3. Officials said the cut was made to meet a similar move on the part of the American Tobacco company. Gordon Agnew. Their announcement of the final step in 10 years, research, experi ments on 3 50 children, was hailed by Dr. E. V. McCollum of Johns Hopkins University, one of the world’s forem, ost dieticians, as a "milestone in scientific progress.” Their work, he said, eliminates con fusion about the diet needed for teeth. Vitamin D comes from sun shine and cod liver oil, or their substitutes. The phosphorus foods in order of their richness are egg yolk, milk, meats, leafy vegeta bles and the seeds, grains, roots and tubers. The salvia, Dr. McCollum said, is probably the means of tooth pro .1 11 1 ttcuuu, imuugu pnuapwui US iu ic ceives from the blood. The diet announcements were made at a luncheon given by the board of governors of the West China University, to which the Agnews are returning. Dr. Agnew said they found their clue in analysis of 3000 diets of Chinese and Tibetans who have better teeth than Americans. They returned to the University of Tor onto for scinetific investigation and were able to cause 100 per cent decay in teeth of rats by diet alone. Finally this year the feeding of children began. Decay was not only prevented among those with the rich phosphorus-vitamn D. bal ance, but decay already started stopped its progress. "The significant fact,” said Dr McCollum, "is that the Agnews for the first time, consciously and un der scientfic'control, have succeed ed in producing and preventing dental caries (decay) practically at will, and to a degree approaching 100 per cent. Their work gives further strength to the conclusions that dental caries can be largely, perhaps wholly, prevented by cor rect eating.” Mother of 7—Still Young THE woman who gives 'her organs the right stimulant need not worry about growing old. Her system doesn’t stagnate; her face doesn’t age. She has the health and “pep" that come from a lively iiver and strong, active bowels. When you’re sluggish and the system needs help, don’t take a lot ol “patent medicines.” There’s a famous doctor’s prescription for just such cases, and every druggist keens this standard preparation. It is made from fresh laxative herbs, active senna, and pure pepsin. Just ask for Dr. Caldwell’s syrup pepsin. Take a little every day or so, until eveiy organ in your body feels the big improvement. The next time ypu have a bilious headache, or feel all bound-up, take this delicious syrup instead of the usual cathartic. You’ll be rid of all that poisonous waste, and you haven’t weakened the bowels. You’ll have a better appetite, and feel better in every way. The constant use of cathartics is often the cause of a sallow complexion and lines in the face. And so unnecessary! Would you like to break yourself cf the cathartic habit? At the same time building health and vigor that protects you from frequent sick spells, headaches, and colds? Get a big bpttle of Dr. Caldwell’s syrup pepsin today. Use often enough to amid those attacks of constipation. When you feel weak and run-down or a coated tongue or bad breath warns you the bowels need to be stimulated. Give it to children instead of strong laxatives that sap their strength. It isn’t expensive. SOCIAL RESEARCH REPORT After .three years of study, Pre sident Hoover’s committee on so cial research reported that violent revolution is possible in America unless there can, be a more im pressive integration of social skills and fusing of social purposes than is revealed by recent trends.” More than 500 investigators aided in the investigation which was financed by the Rockefeller Foundation.
