OF TREASURY Washington — Henry Morgen thau, Jr., of New York City, has assumed control of the federal gov ernment's finances following in duction into office at the White House as Secretary of the Treas ury. Morgenthau’s appointment was announced by the President im mediately following the resigna tion of. William H. Woodin, also of New York, who has been ill in Arizona. "No change will be made in Treasury policy,” Morgenthau said. * It was indicated that Earl Bail lie, special assistant to the Secre tary, wrould not be named as Un dersecretary. Baillie came to Washington with the intention of remaining only a few months, Morgenthau said. Hi? iappointment had been criti lized by Senator ; Couzens (Re publican), of Michigan, because of a! connection with a New. York stock fand bond firm. Immediately upon the appoint ment of Morgenthau, Dean Ache son; -Acting Secretary of the Treasury and Undersecretary, was dropped. Many To Fly To Miami Air Races A record number of sportsman pilots will fly to the All American Air Races to be held January 11 to 13 at Miami, according to Major E. E. Aldrin, head of the aviation division of the Standard Oil com pany of New Jersey and a member ,.,f the content committee at the races. He took off from Newark Friday for Miami. The proclama tion amended the Chief Executive’s proclam itions of March 6 and March 9, and his executive order of March 10, under which the President assumed authority over all banks as a result of the March 4 banking crisis. Processing Tax On Hogs To Continue Raleigh—The hog processing tax rate during January will be 1 cent1 a pound, as it was in December,1 and will not be raised to a cent and a half, as was expected, for Janu ary, according to a telegram re reived by Collector Charles H. ELcbertson, for the North Carolina district, from U. S. Commissioner, af Revenue Helvering. This tax applies to the man who^ slaughters and sells one or more, bogs and the rate is $1 per 100, pounds. The information is to affset the impression or possibility the tentative order that this hog __:_ 50 per cent for January. Mr. Robertson said that- it is possible that the rate will be increased for February, although he has received no instructions as to that month.
