Black-Draught
Clears Up Sluggish;
Dull Feeling
“I have used Thedford’s Black
Draught for constipation for a
long time, and find it gives relief
for this trouble,” writes Mrs.
Frank Champion, of Wynne, Ark.
“I think it is good for spells
caused from gas on the stomach.
If I get up in the morning feeling
dull and ^sluggish, a dose of Black
Draught taken three times a day
will cause the feeling to pass away,
and in a day or two I feel like a
new person. After many years of
use we would not exchange Black
Draught for any medicine.”

Told This Was
A Fisherman
Here is a snake story out of the
West that comes to us from Char
les Link of Kelliher, Minn., and
which we pass on to you. One day
as I was en route to one of my fa
vorite fishing holes, with a box of
fishing tackle in one hand and a
gallon jug of whisky in the other,
he relates, I noticed a rattlesnake
caught beneath a large rock.
Like the good Samaritan that I
am, I stopped to release the snake,
but not realizing that I meant no
harm, the reptile gave an angry
rattle and bit me on the leg. I
had always heard chat whisky was
good for snake bite, so I swung the
jug to my mouth and began plug
ging away at it. e
Although I didn’t stop until 1
had drained it, I felt no effects
from my snake bite cure, but I
noticed that the jug by that time
had swollen to five times its ori
ginal size from the rattler’s poison.
It wasn’t until I set down the
_.... :_ -u.. t j:_1
snake was so drunk he couldn’t let
go of my leg. I pried loose his
fangs and holding him by the head
bandaged first the wound he had
received from the rock, and then
that which he had given me. Then
1 releasd him, picked up my tackle
box, and continued by walk to the
river. I had fished for about an
hour and was almost out of bait
when I felt a tap on the shoulder.
Imagine my surprise when I saw
the rattler with a frog in his mouth
which he presented to me for use
as bait. When I went home, the
rattler followed me and we soon
became the best of friends.
It wasn’t long before Herbert
(that’s what I named him) learn
ed to do various useful things
about the house. Just as an ex
ample. he would lie on the doorstep
and when visitors came he rattled
until I opened the door.
One night I was awakened by
an awful racket in the room where
I kept my valuables. I snatched
up a gun and hurried to the scene.
There was Herbert gripping the
combibnation on the safe with his
fangs, his body tightly coiled
around a burglar’s legs, and his
tail out the window rattling for the
police.

Chalk up another ’first” for
North Carolina. This time the
credit of providing another "first”
for the state belongs to the color
ed people.
North Carolina is the first state
in the union from which a colored
man was appointed as assistant to
the attorney general of the United
States under a Democratic admini
stration. The colored gentleman
in questio \ is one Robert Lee Vann,
born and reared in Maney’s town
ship, Hertford county, North
Carolina. He is living in Pennsy
lvania and is a lawyer and editor
of a paper. He was appointed as
special assistant to the attorney
general by President Franklin D.
Roosevelt.
Another interesting feature in
this appointment is the fact that
the negro Vann was given the ap
pointment for which the Hon.
John G. Dawson, of Kinston,
worked so hard to get. Mr. Daw
son is former chairman of the State
Democratic Executive committee,
and he is said to have remained in
Washington for three weeks trying
to get the job that was finally
given to the Negro Vann. It is
understood here that Mr. Dawson
and his friends were somewhat put
out and greatly peeved when a na
tive North Carolina negro won out
over a stalwart like Mr. Dawson.
State Sabbath School Association.
There will also be special group
conferences in the meeting; one for
leaders of Children led by Miss
Beulah Lyerly, for leaders of Young
People, led by Miss Edith Krider,
for adults in general, led by Miss
McDaniel, and one for pastors and
Supts. led by Rev. Peeler.
Special Musical numbers will be
rendered by the choir of First Pres
byterian church, and by various
members of the Second Presby
terian church under the direction
of Harry Livengood,. and of the
Episcopal church under the direc
tion of Mrs. D. E. Faust. Local
pastors will also have a part in the
program.
It is hoped that special efforts
will be made on the part of all
concerned to be present at this
meeting, Sunday afternoon March
11, at 2:30 p. m., in the First
Presbyterian church of Salisbury.
Do you believe in signs? . . . .
There are a number of them in
Salisbury placed there for the
especial benefit and protection of
the motorist, and there are also
many placed for the welfare of the
pedestrian. In the latter class there
is one in particular, at the intersec
tion of Kerr and Ellis Streets, at
the Frank B. John School, which,
although as large as the top of .
bridge table, apparently seems to
be hard to seen on the part of a
number of drivers, who persist in
driving south on this particular
block, while school is being dis
missed. Also it is well to remem
ber that the young lads, with the
white belts,'1 in the center of the
street are not just playing soldier
but are invested with just as
much authority as a traffic officer
in uniform, while at that definite
task. So while driving in this vi
cinity when the pupils are enter
ing or leaving school, bear this
thought in mind, . . . WE ALL
