Of course, in the rodeo a la Chilena thrilling exhibitions of horseman ship are the main feature of the (lay, but they are att nded by the cueca, a dance characteristic of the Chilean countryside, and much im bibing of the drink that cheers. The celebration is staged on one of the large farms. The main ex hibition—shown in the above photo graph taken by one of the passengers on the weekly cruises from New York to Chile—is staged in a grassy arena surrounded by s hedge-like fence. about two yards from which is a cir cular white track. When the big act begins one of the bulls, held in readiness for the performance, is driven as fast as possible around the arena. Each pair of contestants —mounted—must stop the bull, turn it around and drive it back around the ring twice, without allowing it to come inside of the white track. It is in stopping and turning around the madly rushing bull that the dex terity of the rider and training of the horse are shown at their best. Inasmuch as the judges base their decision as much upon form as up on results, a pair of riders to win the prize must put on a wonderful show of skill. poXfcvh, "t > 8296 J Designed in Sizes: 14, 16, IS, 20, with i i:st measures 33, 34. 36. 3tt. ; ; ! 40 and 42. The sketch shows a flattering ver sion of the shoulder frill—flattering ind easy to make. The yoke of the dress is set off by soft fulness in the front with a contrasting bit of ribbon drawn thru it. This permits of the proper dash of color. This frock would be pretty in a printed chiffon voile with clear green pattern on a white ground and green twist of ribbon. The skirt is simple and clender. Despite the fact that the city lies on the path of the popular cruise route between New York, California and the Cen tral Americas and is visited by hun dreds of travelers every year, it has taken on but few of our modern ways. Cartagena presents to travelers a better picture of medieval days than many of the old cities of Europe, for it has changed but little since the time. 401 years ago, when Spain sent aver royal architects to design the city’s palaces and engineers to lay mt her streets. Mellow churches and convents fashioned in the style of old Seville still rise from sunny Moorish plazat and winding streets flanked with Spanish dwellings. On the Parqut Bolivar still stands the Palace of the Inquisition from which emanated the stern sentences of the religious courts. And around the city are the same tower-topped wall and grim fortresses that met the attacks of pirates and organized navies which tried to despoil the city of the fabu lous wealth drawn from the rich mines of the interior. In a word, Cartagena—the only seat in the New World upon which Spain lavished part of the spoils of her conquest— reflects the heyday of Spanish art. architecture and culture. Inquiry is made about people’s financial standing, but some of them are mostly characterized by finan cial lying down.
