Offer Seed Loans Again This Year Emergency crop and feed loan; are being made available to North Carolina farmers again this year, according to information receivec by Dean I. O. Schaub, of State Col lege. These loans, handled through thi Farm Credit Administration, ar< intended for thpse farmers whc cannot obtain from other source: the loans or credit needed to bu) seed, fertilizer, and feed. The dean pointed out that the loans will be extended only tc farmers who are either cooperating directly with the crop adjustmeni programs or else are not planning tc increase their 193 5 production ir any way detrimental to the succes; of the programs. Growers wishing to obtain loan: may file their applications with the county crop loan committees. Sec urity for the loans will consist of a first lien on the crops to be raised or the livestock to be fed, Dear Schaub stated. The maximum amount of an in dividual loan will be $500, and the minimum $10. However, no loan will be greater than the amount ac tually needed to buy seed, fertilizer The feed loans will be limited ta $10 a head per month for horses and mules during the period when feed must be purchased. Likewise, the amount for other stock has been fixed at $4.5$ a head per month for cattle, 50 cents for sheep, 35 cents for goats, $1 for hogs. Those who borrow $100 or less will receive their loan in one pay ment. Farmers who get more will receive the money in several install ments as required to meet their ex penses for seed, feed, and fertilizer. -1 TIMELY FARM QUESTIONS | ANSWERED AT STATE j COLLEGE iI Question:—What minerals are necessary for the laying flock? Answer:—The usual mineral feeds are bone meal, oyster shell, or ground limestone, salt and grit. Some minerals are found in small grains such as wheat, corn and oats but the amount in these grains is inadequate and must be supplemen ted from other sources. Bone meal supplies calcium and phosphorus and helps build tissue and bone. The oyster shell is fed for its high cal cium content. Salt stimulates the appetite, renders the mash more pal atable and increases the vital proces ses while grit is an aid in grinding the food. All are absolutely nec essary for egg production. Question:—How soon can grain and hay be fed the young calf? Answer:—Small amounts of both grain and hay should be offer ed the calf when about two weeks of age. No more grain, however, should be fed at any time than the calf will clean up. The feeding of hay should be sparing at first and gradually increased as the calf be comes accustomed to the feed. Use a clean bright mixed hay for the first three or four weeks. After that a good leafy alfalfa hay is best but any good legume hay may be used. The kind and mixtures of grain for the growing calf are given in Extension Circular No. 177 and copies may be had free upon appli cation to the Agricultural Editor at State College. -: Question:—Is sweet sorghum cane suitable for silage, Answer:—While corn is more widely used than any other crop the sweet sorghum canes are being used extensively. The cane is only about 75 percent as efficient for milk production as corn but the extra tonnage of silage from the cane more than offsets the lower feed ing value. Corn .however, has the advantage in being easy to harvest. The sorghums grow tall and pro duce large yields, but they blow down and tangle easily making them hard to harvest.
