■■■ ..-=--— Ancient Wedding Custom Revived «“**> ' 1 1 mft? 1 1 —— ■ Custom of Laying Away Bottle of Wine at Wedding or at Birth of Child Becoming Popular ancient custom being revived in this country is that of pre senting a bottle of wine to the bride and groom on their wedding day. The wine is laid away, to be opened on their first wedding an niversary or at the birth of their first child. Friends often go together and present the newlyweds with a case of wine or champagne, each bot tle labeled with the year it is to be opened. The grape, deriving its suste nance from the earth and its sweetness from the rays of the sun, has long been looked upon as a symbol of fertility. How appro priate then, is its use at a mar riage festival. The custom of laying away a bottle of wine to commemorate a special event seems to be of ob scure origin, but is believed to{ have first been observed In wine growing countries. Weevil Infestations Reach Serious Stage Boll weevil infestations in North Carolina are becoming serious in many sections, according to C. H. Brannon, extension entomologist at State College. Recent observations have shown that the weevils have spread over most of the Piedmont area. This year weevils are attacking many farms where they have not appear ed in appreciable numbers before. Over practically all the cotton growing area of Eastern North Carolina weevils are now being found, Brannon said, and the in crease has been heavy within the past two weeks. If cloudy, warm weather prevails during the rest of August, he con tinued, weevil damage over most of the State will be really serious un less effective control measures are started at once. He recommended that growers who find weevils in their cotton should start dusting with calcium arsenate or a half-and-half mixture of lime and calcium arsenate. Since the infestations are so widely spread, he urged that every ‘farmer keep a close lookout for weevils. Six pounds of dust should be sprayed on each acre of cotton, Brannon stated. The plants do not need to be coated with a heavy : layer of dust, but the spray should be heavy enough to send a good fog of dust about the plants. Brannon also urged the growers to keep a sharp watch for red spid er, which is being found in a large number of fields this year. As a1 control measure, he stated that at < least two dustings of sulphur should be made about a week apart. Ten pounds should be applied to the acre. __ I Twenty-six farmers in Stanly County are raising colts as a part of the county-wide program of pro ducing workstock at home. Yadkin County beemen report harvesting from 50 to 100 pounds honey per colony this season. Try CARDUI For . These growers will be given cre dit for their surplus yield only when the additional cards are se cured from the agents, explained E. Y. Floyd, of State College. In preparing future contracts, he continued, 1935 will be one of the base years, and growers will seed accurate records of their pro duction for this year to get full al lotmentst. Due to various conditions, some cf the growers are producing on :heir alloted acreage more tobacco than they can sell under their re gular allotments, while others are aot producing as much as their al otments. At the request of growers, ar rangement has been made that those vith a short crop may take their ;urplus allotment cards to their county agents, who will transfer the cards to growers with an ex cess poundage to sell this fall. iSnce the cards are to sell at the Timely Farm Questions Answered At State College Question: How much legume hay should be provided for each mature cow in my herd? Answer: Under average condi tions in this state, two tons of le gume hay will be sufficient for feeding during the winter months. Where there is a shortage of suc culent roughage, this amount should be increased. With plenty of common roughage such as grass hay and straw from threshed grain and a good supply of silage the fi gure given will be ample. Question: When should breeding hens be selected for next years’ flock? Answer: Birds that molt in late fall or early winter are always the best producers and breeding hens should be selected from them. The flock should be watched carefully through August and early Septem ber and those birds that go into a molt should be sold. The late molt ers will come back into production in a short period and will pass on this producing quality to their off springs. Question: Is it too early to har vest lespedeza for hay? Answer: The usual dates for cut ting hay are from August 1 to September 1 for the Korean variety and from August 15 to October 1 for the other varieties. However, the best time to cut is when the growth is 15 inches high or the plants are in full bloom. When July and August are dry and Sep tember wet ^ might be well to de lay cutting the Common, Tennes see 76 and Kobe varieties as the main growth o fthese varieties will then take place in September.
