EAST SPENCER
The Naturalist’s Column
(By Frazer G. Poole)
Pink clouds in the sky, the set
ting sun streaming across the wat
er, white caps out at sea, green
water churned into frothing cream,
palmettos casting long, dark
shadows on the dunes, and in the
cove a thousand birds crying,
screaming, darting, fighting for
each particle of food—
A scene, not quiet, yet beautiful
in its pure naturalness. In the air
and on the sands a thousand birds
were feeding. Hundreds of Caspian
terns, with their blood red bills
and black crowns, skimmed low
over the water or flew in erratic
circles over the heads of their fel
lows. Out over the sear, brown
pelicans folded their wings and
dived like great brown thunder
bolts into the ocean. They emerg
ed from the surface and, after roll
ing quietly in the trough of the
waves for a minute, rose only to
dive again. In all the dives that
were executed that morning only
one missed his fish. Along the rip
pled sands of the beach ran sand
erlings and pectoral sandpipers,
running forward to get the food
left on the sand by the receding
j wave and then quickly running
back to escape the incoming one.
Black terns flew gracefully over
the sand, their black plumage
glowing in the rays of the dying
sun. Herring gulls settled on the
water and fed on scraps in the
waves, never ceasing their raucous
cries. Then over the waves came
a flock of graceful black birds, the
unique black skimmers of our
southern coast. It was the first
time I had ever observed their pe
culiar manner of feeding and I got
keen pleasure out of watching their
bladelike bills plough the surface
of the water in search of food, as
they skimmed gracefully over the
sea.
Then suddenly it was over, for
like a great lumbering ox a human
crashed into their midst. With
wild screams and frightened cries
they scattered. The great heron
that had been feeding with them
flew off down the inlet; the peli
cans soared into the sky. The
terns and gulls scattered up and
down the beach. But I, the Ox,
turned from the bar and walked
slowly away. The sun had set,
the sky was edged in gold, the pal
mettos were dark shadows, the
birds had gone, the surf boomed
on. Across the dunes came the salt
tang of the sea—but the beauty
was gone and I was alone.

Monument to the "father of the
American Navy”, at Washington.
JOHN PAUL JONES
^LTHOUGH his exploits in the
War of Independence were
woven into the heroic legends oi
our country, the mortal remains
of Admiral John Paul Jones, the
“father of the American navy”,
rested for more than a century
in an obscure graveyard in
Paris.
Only In 1905, President Theo
dore Roosevelt sent a convoy of
warships to bring the body to
American soil for honorable in
terment at Annapolis. Congress
at the same time ordered the
erection of a suitable monument
as a perpetual reminder of the
gallant sea hero’s contribution
to American freedom. The monu
ment, shown in the sketch above,
stands in the nation’s capital.
The admiral began his life as
John Paul, adopting the name
Jones after the death of an elder
brother who had inherited it
from a foster-father. He was
born in Scotland on July 6,1747,
and began his sea-going life at
the age of twelve, when he was
apprenticed to a merchant
trader.
When John was twenty-six.
his elder brother died and left
him plantations in Virginia. He
decided to make America his
home. With the outbreak of the
Revolutionary tfar, John Paul
Jones, though still under thirty,
offered his services in building
up a Continental navy.
His naval achievements were
many and varied, his youth
merely adding glory to his deeds.
The historic battle between his
little Bon Homme Richard and
the giant warship Serapis
marked the climax of his victo
ries for the American cause.
Congress ordered a medal struck
in his honor. France, allied with
the colonists, showered him with
marks of esteem, and Catherine
the Great of Russia engaged his
help in fighting the Turks.
Sick and heart-broken over
court intrigues directed against
him in.St. Petersburg, he went
to Paris, where he died on July
18, 1792, in the midst of the
French Kevolhtion. Into his
forty-five years of life he had
crowded achievements which fix
his name forever on the Ameri
can roll of genius.
