Knew Her Bill
Buffalo Bill told this story on
himself: He returned home one
evening from a long scouting trip
and rode up to his house, very tired.
He tapped gently on the bedroom
window.
“Who’s there?” his wife asked.
"It’s Bill, honey,” he repled.
"Oh no it isn’t,” said his wife,
"and if. you don’t get away from
that window at once, I’ll shoot.”
Bill rode away and joined some
of the boys at the fort. They were
a congenial crew and the "cup
that cheers” was passed many times
before Bill decided to return home
again. This time he rode up at full
gallop, let out an Indian war
whoop, jumped his horse over the
picket fence and fell out of the
saddle onto the front porch with
a tremendous bang. His wife’s
voice floated out from the bed
room: "Is that you, Willie?” she
said sweetly.
Begone the Thought
Modern Sonny: "Aw, pop, I
don’t want to study arithmetic. It
ain’t no use.”
Modern Daddy: “What! A son
of mine grow up and not be able
to figure football scores, batcing
averages and racetrack odds?”
Lady: "I guess you’re getting a
good thing out of attending the
Smith boy, ain’t you, Doctor?”
"Yes, I get a pretty good fee,
why?”
Lady: “Well, I’m hoping that
you won’t forget that my boy
Johnnie threw the brick that hit
him.”

In conformance with request,
The Watchman reprints here an
editorial by Charles A. Dana, of the
New York Sun, now many years
of age but certain of annual ap
pearance in the press. The Dana
editorial:
"We take pleasure in answering
at once thus prominently the com
munication below, expressing at
the same time our great gratifica
tion that its faithful author is
numbered among the frineds of
The Sun:
Dear Editor—I am S years old.
Some of my little friends say there
is no Santa Claus. Papa says. "If
you 'see it in The Sun, it’s so.’
Please tell me the truth; is there a
Santa Claus?
VIRGINIA O’HANLON.
Ill West Ninety-fifth Street.
"Virginia, your little friends are
wrong. They have been affected
by the scepticism of a sceptical
age. They do not believe except
what they see. They think that
nothing can be which is not com
prehensible by their little minds.
"All minds, Virginia, whether
they be men’s or children’s, are
little. In this great universe of
ours man is a mere insect, an ant,
in his intellect, as compared with
the boundless world about him, as
measured by the intelligence capa
ble of grasping the whole of truth
and knowlege.
“Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa
Claus. He exists as certainly as
love and generosity and devotion
exist, and you know they abound
and give to our life its Highest
beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary
as if there were no Virginias. There
would be no childlike fiath then,
no poetry, no romance, to make
tolerable this existence. We should
have no enjoyment, except in sense
and sight. The eternal light with
which childhood fills the world
would be extinguished.
"Not believe in Santa Claus?
You might as well not believe in
fairies! You might get your papa
to hire men to watch in all the
chimneys on Christmas Eve to
catch Santa Claus, but even if
they did not see Santa Claus com
ing down, what would that prove?
Nobody sees Santa Calus, but that
is no sign there is no Santa Claus.
“The most real things in the
world are those that neither child
ren nor men can see. Did you ever
see fairies on the lawn? of course
not, but that’s no proof that they
are not there. Nobody can con
ceive or imagine all he wonders
there are unseen and unseeable in
the world.
“You may tear apart the baby’s
rattle and see what makes the noise
inside, but there is a veil covering
the unseen world which not the
strongest man, nor even the united
strength of all the strongest men
that ever lived, could tear apart.
Only faith, fancy, poetry, love ro
mance, can push aside that curtain
and view and picture the supernat
ural beauty and glory beyond. It is
all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this
world there is nothing else real and
abiding.
“No Santa Claus! Thank God!
he lives, and he lives forever. A
thousand years from now, Virginia,
nay, ten times ten thousand years
from now, he will continue to
make glad the heart of childhood.”
