STRIP CROPPING IS GOOD
WAY TO CONTROL EROSION
Farming in strips is one of the
best methods of controlling soilj
erosion and of building up the fer
tility of the soil, say agronomists
of the 37,500-acre Arcadia erosion
control demonstration area in
Davidson county.
Strip-cropping, as explained by
project manager E. C. Jernigan,
means the seeding of the regular
farm row crops in long bands be
tween strips of close-grtowing
crops, as nearly, on the contour as
possible—around the slopes instead
of up and down the hillsides.
Small grains, lespedeza, clover
and other soil-building crops serve
as a sort of stop-gap, the close ve
getation retarding the speed of
water, spreading it out like a sitter,
and thereby minimizing soil ero
sion, according to E. C. Blair, es
tension agronomist at State Col
lege.
Strip-cropping has many ad
vantages over .other methods of
controlling erosion, since it can be
put intto practice at little cost. It
is economical because long narrow
strips require less labor for culti
vation than square fields of the
same area.
The most popular rotation used
in the Arcadia area is a 3-year sys
tem in which corn is followed by
small grain in the fall, lespedeza
seeded the following spring. The
lespedeza is left on the ground for
twfo years before another crop of
corn is planted.
Strip-farming works very well
with this type rotation, Blair said.
For example, a 9-acre field in les
pedeza may be strip-cropped as
follows: The field would be mark
ed off in contour strips 60 to 80
feet wide. In the fall wheat
would be sown astride every third
contour line, covering approxima
tely half the distance between the
upper and lower line, oorn to be
planted in the spring astride the
contour line below the wheat,
leaving the strip below in lespedeza.

Laxative combination
‘•oiks know is trustworthy
The confidence thousands of par
ents have in good, old reliable, pow
dered Thedford’s Black-Draught has
prompted them to get the new Syrup
of Black-Draught for their children.
The grown folks stick to the pow
dered Black-Draught; the youngsters
probably will prefer it when they
outgrow their childish love of sweets.
Mrs. O. W. Adams, of Murray, Ky.,
writes: “I have used Thedford’s
Black-Draught (powder) about thir
teen years, taking it for biliousness.
Black-Draught acta well and I am
always pleased with the results. I
wanted a good, reliable laxative for
my children. I have found Syrup ol
Black-Draught to be just that.”
BLACK-DRAUGHT
‘‘UTILITY ROOM” BANISHES ALL BOTHER
OF TROUBLE-MAKING OLBTIME BASEMENT
The basement never will be a
source of trouble and expense to
anyone who builds this attractive
colonial economy cottage according
to the plan shown here. The rea
son is simple. The hjuse has no
basement.
In its place an attached garage
and utility room containing the
heating aparatus and the home
laundering equipment have been
added — an innovation in step
saving while laundering or tending
the furnace.
The utility room as designed is
large enough to contain the house
hold washer and ironer, the set
tubs, and a compact heating plant.
This practice of doing away with
the basement or at least of moving
the home laundry-room up to the
first floor is steadily increasing. It
is far more convenient to have the
laundry-room adjoining the kitchen,
for example. Putting it on the
ground level permits better light
ing and ventilation and makes it
easier for the housewife to use a
simple color scheme that makes
the laundry room as attractive as
her spic-and-span kitchen.
The same ideas of compactness
and convenience that were utilized
in placing the laundry-room on the
first floor can be noted throughout
the remainder of this house plan as
well. There are three bedrooms
in addition to the living room, kit
chen and dining room and yet the
entire home t^as the appearance oi
a quaint little cottage.
