Dedication Of Stadium Marks Homecoming Day - A Dr. Omwake Will Head Committee In Charge (From The Pioneer) Catawba’s new football stadium is to be dedicated on October 24.1 The exercises will take place be tween the halves of Catawba’s Homecoming Day football game with Guilford College. At the Executive Committee Meeting of September 11, Dr. Omwake, Ca tawba College President, was chosen to head the committee in charge of the exercises. "The program will be short,” said Dr. Omwake in a private in terview. "It will probably consist of two short addresses and appro priate music by the college band.” As yet th« speakers have not been secured. . \ The new stand, the foremost of | Catawba’s summer improvements, is well designed. Two entrances are provided, one at the eastern end of the grandstand, the other in the middle of the stand. The latter entrance uses a ramp type incline to enter on the level of the front walkway from which rises the stairways into the stand. To facilitate the clearing of the stand there is an exit provided at the southern end. This opening dif fers from the other ..two in hat it has no ticket booth. The booths, located at the two entrances are large enough to provide storeroom. All field mark ers, chairs, and other removable field and stand equipment will be stored in them. Thirteen tiers of seats can easily accomodate comfortably over twice as many spectators as the replaced stand. Seven stairs pro vide ample means for filling and emptying the grandstand. The seats of the 245 foot structure are of fine grain California Redwood Timber. The use of split timbers in the seats eliminates the possibility of rotting caused by accumulated water remaining on the seat boards. The walkways and footboards are layed in all-heart Lousiana long leaf pine, the best flooring that could be secured. A. L. Jarrell, of Salisbury, sup ervised the erection of the steel work. All supports are set upon individual concrete bases, thus pro-, viding a sure footing for the entire! stand. The main supports andi cross braces are of solid, electrical-! ly welded steel pipe. The entire 245 foot structure is supported by this fireproof solid understructure. High in the center of the stand is the press-box. t Its 33 foot length provides adequate space for our own and visiting pressmen. Inside the box is a desk running the entire length of the front. The upper row of the two tiers of seats is for the visiting scouts and press observers. Palmer Stoudemire, a former Catawban, has erected a Public Address system. Through his two loudspeakers the spectators get \ vivid description of the details of plays too far away to be noted by even the keenest observers. This with the new fence and three flag poles completes Catawba’s new Stadium. • Buy In "Greater Salisbury”. mtwarm Hoped To Dance u^nm m ) NEW YORK . . . The school, although consisting largely of dyed-in-the wool teachers searching for higher learning and the answers to their pupils innocent queries, had a good ly number of winter-school stu dents. A few of these were here to elevate their learning, otherwise known as grades, but for the most part they were interested in extra credits. For the "regulars” of the board ing students, Catherine Sykes and Doris Council made up the fern inine side of ooe semester’s enroll ment, and Lorna Bode held the fort for the entire session. E. K. White ner and Bob Tranbaugh wielded the flashlight and the clock through the long night hours. Sleepily Ken Kepner, Red Holbrook, and A1 Shenberger attended classes during the mornings. Nolan Reid also ran—around the countryside. Bill Guy and his younger brother, John, trimmed the campus, keeping themselves in trim for football. Several seniors and postgraduates were seen around the laboratories making experiments and dusting off their weary craniums. Annie Wain, Ruth Terry, Louise Ever harde, and many others brayed the heat and miles each day to see what they could see on the inside of a book-cover throughout the summer months.
