The shaking quit end I did not cramp. I felt worlds better. Dunn Jesus the Water of Life. Lesson for January 17th. John 4:7-26. Golden Text: John 4:14. I The record of Jesus’ conversa [ tion with an unknown Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well is most ap pealing. A woman of the place C3me to the spring to draw water, and Jesus requested of her a drink. It is all very natural and human. But something happened to give a divine and eternal significance to what might have been a merely words were uttered sure to last as long as time. Think of the significance of the ' Savior’s contact with this unfortu nate woman. Jesus treated her with unfailing tenderness and sympa thy, for he had no sex prejudice of any kind. Although he lived in a time when women were not held in high esteem, he always mani fested toward them an impressive courtesy. Turn now to the words spoken bv the Master to his new friend. What lesson was hie seeking to teach her? First of all, he told her, that the divine, life-giving pres-j ence is akin to cool, refreshing water. "As the water of this old " spring,” he insisted, "brings re » freshment to those who drink, so imuch more does the living water lof God’s Spirit bring peace to dis-. Itracted lives.” * < But there is a second lesson. Je , sus Vas eager to make clear the --- permanencey of the divine favor. Earthly water is temporary in its effects. Soon does man thirst again. And water is restricted in its re storative, healing power. There is one way only on which we may find life that persists. We must drink of the perennial water flow ing straight from the heart of God. This is the living water that never fails, that keeps the heart of man secure against every foe that rein forces one’s inner energies, pro tecting them from decay. i Finally, our Lord taught a doc trine of God as Spirit (vs. 24) which remains one of the supreme declarations of the Bible.
