Hoeubli Occckkckck We are pained to leant lrom the Petersburg Eiprea, that oa Saturday evening lart, the usually moral and respectable " cockade city,' waa tbe scene of a ter rible occurrence, involving the flaying alive, butch ering and eating up of two very respectable and worthy eitizena of that place. Meters. J. W. Syme and A. D. Banks. Mr. Syme waa about fifty years of age; Mr. Banks perhaps about thirty. Thia fear ful tragedy took place at Phccaix Hall, between tbe hours of 7 and 1 0 o'clock, and although witnessed by tbe police and a large concourse of citizens, no effort waa made to prevent it, bot on the contrary every fresh act of atrocity waa hailed with about of applause and encouragement Tbe unfortunate gentlemen were the authors and agents of their mutual destruction. Mr. Syne was the editor of the Petersburg Intelligencer, Know Nothing organ, Mr. Banks was a Democrat and pre aided over the columns of the South Side Democrat; hence all the difficulty. By pre-arrangemcnt tbey met upon the stand at Phosnis Hall and commenced the work of death, Mr. Banks skinning Mr. Syme for one hour and fifteen minute, the Utter bearing up with great .fortitude and an occasional wry face. It arst became Syme'a tarn and he commenoed akia ning Banks for a similar length of time. The main battle being tbus over, tbey occupied themselves for half an hour in swallowing each other and succeeded ao effectually that the frienda of Mr. Banke were totally unable to perceive the slightest vestiga of Mr Syme and those of Mr Syme said that there waa not even e button cf Mr Banke coat tail left It is barely possible that there may have been some optical illusion and that these gentlemen only appear ed to swallow each other, and that the skinning waa o.ily in a pickwickian way. Tbey have a rumour 'bat man about Mr. Syme'a aize waa seen to tuke a nift.r for tbe good of hie" wholomme," late thai eveniiig, and it e even hinted that Bank was n .i in vivible. Either these latter appearances were delu aite or there waa eome mistake about the original story of the rkmning and eating up. Their respec tive paper came out yeaterday morning and neither of them In mourning, hut with tbe nanira of the xkinned and eaten men still flourishing aa editors, a lemarkuble manifestation of the spirits A prosnic, matter of fact, person hints that Banka and Syme had some sort of a bet or challenge be tween them, involving a public diecuMion of party politics, which came off as abnv-, and that the tra gedy is merely owing to the exrtggoratftn of excited partumis.
