Clem and Andrew, two slaves who have been in prison for several months post njmn tV charge of murdering the late Alfred Hoyctt, a high ly respectable and worthy citisen or tlie county, were arraigned, and alter a fair and impartial trial, convicted and sentenced to be hanged on Fridny, tbe 22d Inst. The boy Owen, the property of Major O. R. During the work two bills against him were sent to the tJrsnd Jury each of which, after a mrwt thorough, rigid and laborious examination by that body, wax returned not a true bill. Thereupon, a motion was made for his tiiscnargc, which wan met by a counter motion on the part of the btate to bind him over until SenteinUr il i 1 . Nearly every person appealed to be satisfied that the object of tbe prisoners was to implicate some one else la the murder, iu tbe hope of thereby escaping . themselves. Thus, Messrs. Editors, I have endeavored to give yob a fair and impartial sketch of the proceed ings bad last week concerning those implicated in the murder of o ir late friend, Alfred Bovett, and of the pro ceedings formerly had concerning the boy Owen, from the fact that a great many persons in this county feel an interest in the matter, and would like to have a true , statement of tbe case. s . We learn that on Toes day night last Mr. EldriJge Creech, while returning from Court, and when about six miles west of Smithfield, was shot in the face, by a man as is supposed of the tame of YT. II. Kennedy. Mr. Creech was riding io a tc,7 with R. W. Stevens, Esq.-, and it is supposed that Mr. Creech was shot through mistake, as Mr. Ste vns bad been called opoo during tbe week to give testi mony epinst Kennedy and had been threatened by the latter. His intention, it is thought, was to shoot Ste vens. Kennedy was arrested, and the facta, which were - altogether circumstantial, were brought out In an exam- ination before Justices Stevens and Lane. S.A.Smith, Esq., appeared for the State, and J. II. Iu the dLsehurire tf his dutk he almi was at Washington, and thus an intimacy arose U tween him and Mrs. Suklis, which seems mlily to have assumed a eriiiiinal character. Suspicion soon dogged the steps of the young wife and her paramour. As is usual in such cotes, the husbund was the Inst isrson to hear the history of his own dis honor. The connection I ft ween Mr. Sickles and Mr. Key, if we are to give exact dates, Isviui in April ol last year, wbs continued through lat winter, and re newed again ai asningion during the present session Ol Conurcss. Mr. Key hired a house, where (lay used to tnecL When her liurbund was a w ay f nun home Mr. Key would nan U'fore the house, wave a handkerchief, ami she would hurry out to meet him at their uhiiuI pluee of as signation ; hut now comes tlie terrible part of the story. On r nuay, the k'.)th of rennmry, Mr. Sickles was entertaining the President of the I'nited Mutes at din ner, be atone end ol the tabic, Mrs. Sickles at the other. He knew nothing of the matter in hand. In the midst of the dinner a letter was deli vend to him, which revealed to him the history of his wile's shame and of bis own dishonor. At tlie time he could, of course, sny nothing and do nothing. There sat his young wile, opposite him, and by her sido the President. When tlie guests went away he began to consider grimly with himself what course he should adopt. That night he appears to have said or done nothing, but the early part of the next day whs spent in a careful investigation of the mew. Y hen lie hud acquired a reasonable degree of certainty Mr. Sickles tuxed his wife with her guiit. She screamed out that she was " betrayed and lout." but at length admitted the truth of the ueeusulioii. So fur, all was clear the question was how the grievous injury should be avenged f The account we have received from Washington slutes tlmt in the course ot Hint nlternoon while Mr. Sickles was considering with himself what ought to lie done, and was sitting at his window, he saw Mr. Key apt roaehing In house, and making the np pointed signal to tlie Indy whom he bad brought to this : ! i. . , ,i- i . .i . t lerriiue criei. These eon itituted a complete hrsenal or armory we finest ion il ninny English gentlemen could, in a moment of indigna tion suddenly stretch out their hands, as Mr. Sickles did, and find ready two single-barrelled pistols and revolver. Having pluccd these weapons in his pockets he sallied forth, and, as Mr. Key was extending his bund for u friendly grasp Mr. Sickles exclaimed, " Now, villain, you must die '." and fired the first pistol at his enemy, but without efl'ect. Mr. Key hurled an opera' gluss in his face, and a death grapple commenced, the one man trying to muster the other's arm, the other en deavoring to discharge his second pistol. Mr. Sickles prevailed, and with his second shot brought his enemy to the ground. So maddened with passion, however, was he that even wben he had killed Mr. Key he dis charged a barrel of his revolver into the dead man's head, and with a oath rendered himself up the officers ol jus tice. Such are tlie leading facts of this miserable story, which we record with unfeigned sorrow, and which we are sure will tie read with much commiseration by all persons in Migiand wno nad any knowledge of the nc tors in the tragedy. Th" attempt to overthrow the government at Valnar- aici uinii, tmiK place on mo m ol n nruarv. lue revolutionists, however, had not matured their plans, and fell easy prey to the government forces. A letter ssys : lt seems that the signal agreed upon among them fur the commencement ol hostilitk was to he four Hucees- ive discharges of cannon. Unfortunately for them, they mistook the fira of minute guns from the Uuited States store ship Frcdoiiia, which were Dred at 12 o'clock noon or that day in respect to the memory of the late General Henderson, of the United States marine corps, for their signal. Aqout two hundred imjietuous, hotheaded fol lowers of no less impetuous and indiscreet leaders, flew to arms and nuule a dtvccnl upon tho residence of the Intcndente General, where they met with a strone dec did resistance, and were in a short time repulsed, with the Iota of some eight of their number, who were killed outright. Simultaneously with the assault upon the honso of the Intemk-nte General, another party of insur gents broke into the cntom house, and seized a lot of arms belonging to the government. This party was principally composed ol laoorers connected with that csiaoiisnnieni most oi anom were secured oy the om ccrs ami clerks, until the arrival of a military force, which quickly dispersed them. Tbe whole affair, from the time the assault was first made on the Intcndente's residence, until the disiiersion of the insurgents at the custom house, did not last over an hour, perhaps. It is said by eye witnesses, Irom whom I got my information, that the outbreak resembled a nub more than anything else. The loss on the part of the government was only lour, while some twelve of the assailing party were kill eiL and upwnrds of fifty taken prisoners. A printer, belonging to the office of the Valparaiso Comercio, who attempttd to act fire to the 1 nto ndencia, was arrested and shot. The other prisoners, who are in close confine ment, will pmbably meet the Bame fate. The government troops engaged in defending the In temlency and the Custom House, the only two points attucked, wea about 600 three companies of the Third battalion of infantry, and one company of the Ronier regiment. Tlie revolution is effectually put down in the South ern provinces, und from the vigorous measures recently adopted by the government to suppress the insurrec tionary movement in the North, the revolution through out Chili may be considered as virtually at an end. Already 1,05(1 government troops have been thrown for ward at Coqiiitnbo to operate against the revolutionists in Huasco and Copiano, who only number, all told, it is said, 1,500. The Intcndente General issued a proclamation on the 28tb ult, requiring all persons who owned arms to de posit them at the office of police within twenty-four hours, on pain of a criminal prosecution and a fine of $100. Talca, in the south, was the last place to hold out sgainst the government, but it has been surrendered with out firing a shot. Everything, therefore, in that section, may be said to have assumed a peaceful aspect. Cal dera, which is in a state of blockade, Copiapo and Hu asco, are tbe only places ia possession of the revolution ists. - --'- Some few of the leaders of the revolutionary party were captured, and two of them condemned to be shot One of them, Sir Villar, was executed on the 1st inst., at seven o'clock the other, Don Tedro Tierro, has been temporarily reprieved. The rest escaped. The Comer cio, of March 1, speaking of two of the most actively sought for of the revolutionary party, says t " The young Riobos are at present in sanctuary in the boose of the American Consul, which is surrounded with troops, while awaiting ft note from tbe Counsel General at Santiago."
