Our naJtra will be surprised, alter tbe positive charge preferred against bim, to know that be, while a member of Congress, in 1848, maik) tbe following declaration : " Whatever, sir, may be the policy of oUier nations, that of the United ytatee consists pre-eminently in tree trade. Kiterience not ouly bears testimony to this great truth, but God himself baa stamped it with an ooinijiotcut hand in the everlasting features of tbe country, in its vast extent, its diversities of soil and climate, its superior adaptation to tbe production of breadstufts snd cotton the great ataples for feeding aud clothing mankind which, iu our hands, must eventually secure us the control of the com merce and exchanges of the world." la the same re marks, be denounced tbe tar ill of It-12, as " eppri'saive and unjust" He said, with emphasis, " once tawdry wealth overcame honest toil ; but justice aud the demo cracy of numbers finally triumphed, and the ' black ta riff,' of lt42, was replaced by the revenue tariff of 1 846. Happy, glorious result 1 the emancipation of labor from the bonds of capital. A second Heclaration of Indepen dence 1 The grand and instructive event should ever stand as a light and a guide for tbe future." He is again charged with Uiiug an internal improve ment. No proof, ot course, given, liut during bis brief career in Congress, he is not without a record. He then tustained I'retideut l'olk in his veto of mea sures for giving uid to improving the rivers ami harbors in tbe North-west. He opposed the measures on tlic ground that they infringed upon tbe rights of the Stutes, and because of the immense lucreusc of putronuge which they gave to the Federal Government. ... He moreover opposed the distribution of the proceeds of the sales of the public lands among the States. " Distribution," be said, " is the entering wedge of a high restrictive tariff." After tuch an exhibition of Mr. Mct'lernaud's record, can any Southern man with propriety or reason deem Col. Ashmore deserving ot censure T Does he not rath er merit an expression of approbation, for his independ ence in boldly standing out from among the delegates from South Carolina, and daring to do justice to an honest defender aud supporter of the Constitution ? If Mr. McClernand be not deserving of the denunciation be baa received, as his record will show, can any reason be ascribed why he should have been shunned as though he was a leper or why he should be so misrepresented ? We may do injustice, bnt when an innocent man is so hounded, it would.be well that suspicion should be on the alert to discern the cause. Ixi us be vigilant, lest this be but a part of a scheme to drive oQ the North cm Democrats, to revcr the bonds that bold the party together, and after its disruption to commit the South io a purely sectional organization, through which some extreme man, perhaps from South Carolina, perhaps from Alabama, may be put in nomination, and run the slender chance of an election In the House, even though the venture increase the prospects of the Iiluck llcpub lican candidate. Politicians out of party as well as those in it are fair obiecta of popular scrutiny. They are men watch them I South Carolinian. FaiRf-LlKS Saw. An enthusiastic Minnesotian writing about those exquisite Minnehaha Falls in winter says : M The sides of the ravine below the fall are sleep, and are now entirely sheeted with ice from the spray ot the water fall. By dint of sliding, creeping and rolling, the bottom is reached, where you behold a ' Crystal Falace,' more rare and unique than human mind ever devised. The ice hi.s formed behind the fall in stupen dous columns and slender stalactites reaching from top to bottom, shutting from view the passage behind the fall, except in one smull place, through which you may manage to squeeze in, and then the eye falls upon a most bcautilul grotto. Words fail to describe its icy, frosty purity and fantastic splendor. There hang from the solid rock far above your head those crystal, pearly columns, large and regular, reaching to the bottom of the fall, and interwoven witn icicles ot ail biz. s and (.".hapes. Never did nature in her wildest features pro duce aught so exquisitely beautiful as Minnehaha in winter." Parisian Skrvastoaijsm. Some people may, in our age, have beard now and then of the unusual pre tensions of the ladies and gentlemen of the ante-chamber and servants' hall, bnt I am disposed to look upon the following as by much the strongest case that has jet come under my observation. A very short time back, the famous actress, Madame Doche, the one original, in imitable Dame aux Camellias was in want of a lady's maid. Amongst others who applied for the " situation," one suited the lady : terms were agreed upon, and all Beemed about to be satisfactorily concluded, when the Abigail said : " I forgot to bbk what my room is like is it a comfortable one V " Very comfortable," was tbe reply. " With a nre-piaoe x was then rejoined. " Yes," was the answer : " but for many causes I allow no fire to be lighted, as yon git in a well-warmed room .downstairs." Tbe lady's maid drewnp grandly, say ,ing : " Then our ogreement is at an end ; it is not on account of work ' that I need a fire, but because I re ceive my friends every Saturday evening." The papers tin morning bring no further particulars relative to the wreck of the Hungarian. The Baltimore Sun says : The wreck of the Hungarian makes the fourteenth steamer which has been lost since the commencement ol steam navigation between F.uroiie and America. Sub- joinnl we give the names of those tliat have kenJost : 1 resilient, never nearu ol ; Columbia, all bands saved ; Humboldt, all nanus saved ; tuy 01 Hisfgow, never heard of ; City of Philadelphia, all bands saved ; Frank lin, all bands saved ; Aictic, a few only saved ; Pacitic, never neara 01 : liyonnais, a lew only saved ; letnrxst never heard ol ; Austria, burned with great loss of life ; Indian, three uvea lost ; Argo, all bands aaved ; Hunga rian, all bunds lost, probably. The New York Herald bus the following concerning the ill-fated steamer : The Hungariun kft Liverpool on Wednesday, the rJtb inst., under command of Captain Jones, and touched at ljumistown, Ireland, as customary with the vessels ot the line, steaming awuy tlic next afternoon (Thursday, the Jth inst.,) lor Portland. The Hungarian was, on this occasion, on her first voyage from Liverpool to Portland, ber preceding trips having been accomplished in good time and under very favorable circumstances. She was a screw propeller, belonging to the Montreal Ocean Mail Steamship Com pany, whuuDwn seven vessels, runuing alternately be tween Ijverpool and Quebec, Portland or Montreal, in connection with the (Jrand Trunk llailway of Canada, just as suited the interests of trade and travel. The service of the line was performed at latest dates by the following powerful Clyde-built steamers : Hungarian, Captain Junes; Iiobemian, Capt. McMaster; North Iiriton, Capt. Grange ; Anglo Saxon, Capt. Dalantine ; Nova Scotia, Capt. Uorlund ; North American, Capt. Alton ; Canada, (new) j new ship building. As all the ships of the Montreal Mail Company were almost of consort size and capacity, we in great meas ure describe the Hungarian when we republish the fol lowing description ot the North Iiriton : " Tbe North Briton is a bcautilul specimen of naval architecture; her bows are rounded to that curve which modern shipbuilding has adopted as the shape which of fers the least resistance to the water ; and' tbe rest of the hull is in gracelul proportion. The vessel is 320 feet in length, her breadth of beam is 3'J feet, and depth of hold 27 leet. She is about 2,300 tons burthen, and is propelled by double engines of 360 horse power. The engines were constructed by Messrs. Tullocli & Denny, Dumbarton, and the vessel built by Mr. William Denny & Brothers, of tbe same place. , "' " The North Briton contains four decks ; tjie orlop deck, the 'tween deck, the main and spar decks'. She Iwssesses the same facilities for taking in cargo or un loading as are to be found in tbe other steamers belong ing to the company; and like them bus a steam engine on the main deck lor hoisting cargo from the hold. Her arrangements for Internal management at sea, or in port are all that could be desired, and it would seem that nothing has been left undone which would secure the safety of tbe passengers, crew and cargo. Her crew, all told, amounts to 110 men; this includes about forty stewards, who have charge of the provisions and culina ry departments. " Some idea may be formed of the extent of tbe vessel, when, in addition to the accommodation for 110 men ol a crew, she could find a space for 150 cabin and 300 RtTiiiTe nasscntrcrs." The Montreal company have already lost one vessel, the Indian, which Iclt Liverpool on the ath of JSovem ber last, and was totally wrecked on tbe island of Mary Joseph, Nova Scotia, on tbe 21st of that month, under circumstances nearly similar 10 me present, as no lmmeui alecommunication could be had with ber, and much doubt existed for some time as to her identity. Our European files inform us that the British Board of Trade has, after due innuirv. acouitted the master of the Indian of blame, but censured one of his subordinate officers for not slow ing off sliced when ncarine such a dangerous coast, he being in charge at the moment. 1 Cotton Factort.
