THE IRREPRESSIBLE CONFLICT. course upon the inauguration of tlio"jr-i -repret sible conflict" in the West : , " " On Tuesday last there was a riot in I Toledo, Ohio, between the Irish and negro stevedores employed at the docks in load ing and unloading the lake oats. It seems that the Irish made a "strike" and were discharged, aud the negroes engaged in their place?, at the old prices. ' 'The Irish undertook to prevent the blacks from work ing, and for a time .stones, clubs, knives and pistols flourished in a frightful man ner, a great rnuny of the participants re ceiving injuries and some bystanders bc- 'ing killed. Several houses belonging to nt-groes were demolished, and to quell the disturbance the citizens had to bo called out to patrol the streets. This is the beginning of an irrepressible conflict between tho white and black race. Already large numbers of fugitive slaves are gathering in the cities, and, should the abolition policy prevail, the free States will be overrun and-infested with this class of population. The negroes thus let loose npon the community must either bo sup- -perted-ia 4dlres ami-Blot h by thosu among whom they come, or they must put themselves in competition with the white laborera anil rwliino -tho virion Tif-wnrfcif meyuo not wuouy monopolize tne more common of tho industrial pursuits. This will at onco juife an-etifcetuttl check upon" white immigration, and compel tho poorer classes, at least, of Americans, Germans and Irish to take their option between absolute starvation and toiling side by side Vith an inferior and despised race, at wages much lower than they have hither to commanded. We know nothing of the merit of the quarrel between tho Toledo stevedores and their employers. It may bo that the de mands of tho former wcro unreasonable and extortionate. The circumstances show, however, that the employers placed as. high an estimate upon the labor of the blacks as that of tho Irish, for the former weie hired at the same rate that had besti paid the latter. Capital rarely makes any distinction of color in respect to invest ments, and unless deterred by such de monstrations ast hose witnessed in the Ohio city, employers will, as a general thing, taka advantage of all competition among laborers. White men who "derive sustenance for themselves and families by the exercise of their physical strength in hard days' work mean, who have acquired no skill to civ'e them advantages others will now have to look this question of' negro competition squarely in t he face. They ee a pack of rabid fifilitieians in the country, claiming to not upon the dictates of philacthrophy and humanity, who are daily and hourly emuiurajiWii' the naves ot the nouth to elope, well knotting that luti bond in the 'free States the ulhence of any ether tln'tu. - - - they must be nlterwarclH, in provision for Large numbers of "contrabands," sedu ced by the flattering tales of these mischief makers, are rapidly. filling up tho towns -and cities alrcffdypHtJei!fg-inTdestTture and nearly helpless condition. The sup port of these unfortunate, misguided crea tures, must fall chiefly upon the working . clashes of tho North, in-one way or another. The burden will come upon them in the shape of reduced wages, by reason of the increase of the supply of laborers, in ad vanced prices for the necessities of life, growing out of the taxation that " will be required to maintain such of the black paupers as will not work, or in some other manner that will make itself equally felt. We are beginning to see some of the practical results and. effects of the foolish, illogical and baneful "policy" of the Aboli tionists and negro worshippers. The irre pressible conflict between tho white and black races has commenced. It is one that will continue to bo between opposing and enduring forces so long as the radicals at- eVVlAJ'b IV HU U VI 1UUI lllllillU VUUliaUUUUO upon the North and West as free and equal men, to overrun towns and cities. The question is, whether the free laborers are quite ready to exchange their peaceful and r ..-I I i ii xt .i n . t comioruioie nomes in iuo iNona lor tne hemp fields and rice and cotton plantations ,-of the South, driven thither by tho black proteges of the benevolent (' Abolitionists.
