Mr. Nicholson came to tho stand and proceeded to read tho entire Constitution! when Mr. Ileaton offered a resolution that the same be adopted. -On the passage of the resolution, Mr. ' Ileaton called for tho yeas and nays. Mr. Durham said the Conservatives did not look upon this as a Constitution framed by the free people of North Carolina, but one foroed upon them at the point of the bayonet, lie, in tho name of the (Jonser vatives on this floor, asked that the capital bell be toiled, while the vote on tbis resold tion is being taken, as the death knell of the constitutional liberties of the free eiti Zens of North Carolina. --Mrrltedman made a spcech"frmrrrthe Constitution and deprecating Mr. Durham's remarks. Tourgec, also, had his say. Mr. Graham, of Orango, said : " I rise to state that I have never per formed an act more cheerfully in my life than the one which 1 snail perform in voting against this Constitution. North Carolina is the only Southern State in which a large number of the most intelli gent and enlightened citizens are not placed in a lower position than those assignod to the lately emancipated slave. After a great deal of wrangling as to the. manner of signing the imntorhU iuHtru- mcnt, it was determined to call by conn ties. All signed, save Messrs. Various Radicals sung ridiculous and ab surd songs, and bedlam doings were gen orally enacted. - - - - At tho expiration of the recess, Mr. Cowles resumed the Chair. In the absenoe of the Chairman, Mr. Ab bott was, on motion of Mr. Heaton, called to the Cnair. Prayer by Cape Cod Ashley, of tho. Con vention. Mr. Congleten offered a resolution that it is the sense of this Convention, that the next .Legislature shall take into considera tion the condition of the landless popula tion (negroes) of the State, and if practica ble, provide small freeholds for them, so that they may become identified with the interests of the State. . Adopted. On motion, the Convention took a recess until 3 o'clock. Nine O'clock. House rc-assombled President Cowles in.tha Chair. Mr. Heaton presented tho following or dinance : Bsc. 1. On motion of Mr. Tourrrec, a recess was taken nnhl 11 J o clock. Gon. Miles was called on to speak, but declined in a few remarks. General Littlo- tield was next called on and spoke for some time and then sung a song. Dickey, of Cherokee, also sung a song, and Ryrno, the Secretary, sung a song, and several other musical mongrels sung songs. Eleven and a mass 0'Cuck. The President resnmed the Chair. Mr. Rich offered a resolution that the Secretary be authorized to employ an as sistant clerk. Mr. Abbott moved to adjourn. The President said, that last night he bad committed a great mistake in vacating he chair to respond to the resolution of thanks. He said he should have responded from the chair. Ho hoped that the Convention wonld excuse him, as he was jubilant; he was not aware of his breach of decorum 1 Mr. Abbott withdrew his motion to ad- ourn, in ordor to allow the committee on enrollment to report tho final-and- preper ngro8Hment of the ordinance providing lor elections. Mr. Heaton said, as ho had ascertained tho non-ongrossmont of several important ordinances, ho therefore moved that the resolution adjourning at 12 o'clock be re scinded, and that the hour of one be sub stituted instead thereof. Carried. On motion of Mr. Somebody, the House took another recess for fifteen minutes.
