Journeying to the Fair Grounds, located just on the outskirts of the city, I was on hand aa early aa possible to see all that was to be seen. The programme was opened by a prooession around the race course to the speakers stand, where the eager Visitors had ' begun to ' assemble. The prooession was headed by a oolored brass band of this eity, and consisted of the Marshal and assistants, the President and officers of the Society, the State Executive ' and a portion of his followers, and then a v . number of the members of tne Society, the whole closely' followed by a large por tion of the stock to be exhibited. Beach ing the speakers' stand, Eemp P. Battle, . , Esq., President of the Society, proceeded to deliver the opening address. All who know Mr. Battle can form s very definite ,'' ides of the value, i appropriateness -and ; true merit of this address. We can only say here that it did justice to his well . reoognized abilities, and was received with many manifestations or appreciation After the delivery of this sddress the visitors availed themselves of tne liberty permitted to stroll about the Grounds and examine tne articles on exhibition, i was . ; pleased at the large number and improved ' character ef she agricultural Implements t AvMhitAl Tn tliAot w rwurni7.d trne smokin. In these we reoognized tone evidenoes of improvement and promised prosperity ; for if we will but elevate the standard of agriculture, develop it as a , science, and bring oat its true principles, nil other interests must follow in its wake and be possessed of aa upward, growing tendency. Ws were pleased to see the large number of fine specimens of stock here exhibited. The number of blooded and beautiful horses is unusually large and the exhibit of hogs, especially of the valuable Chester breed, is particularly . firatiiying. s i . Turning towards the several Halls for tha display of articles we entered first what is termed Floral Hall. Here nume rous specimens of needlework snd fancy articles, really oreaitaDie to tne skilled in das try of onr kdiesi were on exhibition, and to my especial delight many of the fair ones themselves And it was here . fully realized having oome to the Fair to :' see the fair. Turning from this pleasant soene ( wnore, let truth be told, l lingered long) 1 found , next in order Meobaniea Hall. In this were buggies, sulkies, (both home and foreign); a line assortment of boots and shoes, exhibited by E. A. Voir ler, of Salem; Leach & Co., of Thomas- Tille, snd D. a Murray & Co. of Raleigh, snd Mr. Bhnlts, of Salem, has here a tine lot of home-made furniture, and superior specimens oi Dee gums and noney. Tne Hall of Arte came next in order; but why so termed ws are unable aoonraleiy to eon' iecture. Theartiolea on exhibition were principally oonfined to cooking stoves, ranges and tha like. We pass next into Farmers' Hall, where are to be seen rare collections of apples and frnit trees from Mr. Lindsay, of Chatham; others entered by C. W. IWestbrook, Superintendent of the ibdgeway ttorseries. There were also large number of superior vegetables. Farther particulars I am unable to give in this letter. . . The grounds are tastefully arranged and ' possess that natural undulation auflioient to render the appearance pleasing to the eve.' Tne whole are enclosed by s neat and high circular fenoe, about one mile in circumference, Around one portion of ibis fenoe are arranged stalls for the stock on exhibition. Tha race course is just half s mile in length, beautifully smooth and bard, inviting in appearance and in splen did oondition. - There was some racing done this after noon, but which proved of little interest. To-morrow snd the ensuing day are regar ded as lit days of the Fair, and the pro eeedings of to-day were more of the char acter of formal opening ceremonies than otherwise. To-morrow I will have an op portunity to scrutinize articles and sr rangements more oioeely, and will give yon the benefit of that seratiny. For to-day this general description must aufliee. , Bat few prominent sad distinguished men hare yet arrived ; but the appearanoe of several notable, is expected to morrow. Conductor Clark was in formed that a bridge near the station had ; been undermined, and could not be crossed f the oars. He informed the passengers this fact, and suggested to them the propriety of remaining over night at Eagle Bridge. Before, however, any of them had left the oars, he remembered that hia brother. Robert Clark, was on the opposite side of the bridge with the engine George Gould, snd hs proposed that they shonld walk over the bridge and take con veyance upon tne engine to tne k 'alia. , : This was gladly assented to by the pas sengers only fifteen in number and as soon as possible the engine was loaded with Its precious freight of humanity, snd star ted on its way to the Falls, backing np to the village. Of all that load of persons upon the engine every one went down save Ben son, the express messenger. The engine appears to Lave made s oomplete 'summer sault in its descent of the embankment, snd plunged down into eight feet of water. Ryan, the fireman, was fastened in the eab, bnt managed to release himself and swam s long listanoe, until finally he reached the trunk of a tree and gained the shore. A student of Williams CoUeire also swam to the shore. Dr.: Fowler snd wife were both drowned, but young Aiken was killed outright by the fall. , L. M. Cooley, of Hoosick, was scolded and braised. :.
