The fire last night destroyed two house and seven adjoining Mansard roofs. Don Piatt lost his house and all his furniture, exoept a library and a piano. Piatt was not insured, , The Gorernment sells one million dollars in gold on the first, third and fifth, and a million andahalf on the second and fourth Thursdays, and buys half a million in bonds on the first and third Wednesdays of Msy and pays the interest due May 1st on the 28th inst., without resale. Washixotox, April 28 Night The Court of Claims awarded Eugene Ticketman, of Prussia, $13,000 for the loss caused by the detention of the ship Essex, by the order of General Butler while commanding at New Or leans. Tho Court adjourned to next Monday, when it will clear the docket of the cotton cases and then adjourn to October. In the Supreme Court, in the case of the Osborne Southern Express Com' pany, rs. the City of Mobile, decision is afflrmsd and the tsx levied by Mo bile sustained. The Planters' Bank of Tennessee, vs. the Union Bank of Louisiana. Re mittances and collections due the Planters' Bank were paid by the Union Bank to the military by order of Gen. Banks. The Court held that the ten der of Confederate money, when such money had no value, did not extin guish the debt; that Gen. Banks had no authority to order the debt to be paid, and that an obedience to that order did not exonerate the Union Bank. Justice Bradley dissented, holding that Congress having intervened to protect Gen. Banks, and other officers in similar circumstances, from the re sponsibility for illegal commands en forced by military power, the Govern ment should respond to the injured In an insurance case the Court affirmed the decision of a lower Court, giving the insurance money to a sui aide's heirs. The Court then ad journed to Thursday, when it will adjourn the term. A special order from the War De- partment assigns thirty companies, in cluding all arms, witn all the ma chinery and supplies fur a prolonged expedition, to protect the operations of the Northern Pacific Railroad. It It the heaviest expedition ever sent out in time of peace. The expedition leaves on the 15th of June and will remain in the field until the 15th of October. ; '' The Secretary of the Nary directs the Naval officers and Marines on duty here to appear in full dress at Commodore Aulick's funeral. The Statesrille Intelligencer says: We learn that the Irish peddler who was way-laid and shot by Crawford Holtaouser, last utarday, on tne roaa between Salisbury and Gold Hill, h since died. Holtaouser was arrested a few hours after committing this cold deed, and he is now confined in the jail at Salisbury. The Tarboro' Enquirer says: One of the County Commissioners baa given us the cost of the repairs on the Court House. The entire amount loot up the neat little sum of $3,630. It appear that Henry Motley. Jr.. supposed he had sufficient cans to suspect a man named Priest Tyron of interference with hi martial nghta. Arming himself with his double-barrel gun, charged with buck shot, Motley went to the field where Tyson was at work ploughing, and shot him down. one charge entering Tyson's body and the other hi head.
