Magnolia is busy shipping straw- oemea, Eggs 12 1 ceuts a dosen, oysters 60 cents a gaUon, green peas 75 cents a pecs, potatoes ou cents a Duanei ana strawberries 40 cents a quart, all in Aewbern. s The Pee Dee Herald savs: Great frs are entertained as to the effort of the late frosts oa the wheat crop. The iruit in many localities w all killed. and people in the grain districts fear tnat tne wheat is greatly damaged. The Magnolia Monitor says; Mr. James MaxwelL an old and respected ciUsen of Kenansville township, died on Sunday morning last, after a brief but severe illness. Hi age was about ?J years. He waa buried on Monday with Masonic honors, he having been for many years an earnest and consis tent member of that fraternity. The Raleigh Newa says: The State Agricultural Society will doubtless send to the Vienna exhibition a bale of beautiful cotton grown in Harnett county, being a portion of a lot of over a nun area bales brought irom that county to this market recently, and said to have been the moot beautiful cotton ever purchased in this city. The Danbory Reporter savs: We had a little cutting scrape at a tax- liaiftn in Iasi sTSmaV W-.wt-kaliin lust wwusj as A v v m va v. aa tuwunuiji. swns week. Lee Nelson (little Lee he is called) and Caleb Mabe rot into a Unlit, when Nelson cut Mabe deen on the neck, bnt did not quite reach tne jugular vein. Mabe s neck is very large. It is reported that Nelson has left the county. The Mamiolia Monitor savs: Mr. John KnowlM, the oldest person in the county, died at his residence in Kocnttau township, on Thursday, the 24th inst, at the advanced age of 93 years and 6 mouths. Ho had been an occupant of his late residence 72 years, having moved thither in 1801. In 1872, at the age of 02, he waa baptised and received into the Baptist Church. The Robesonian says : This section wss visited on Friday night last by a heavy frost, which haa done immense damage in the destruction of fruits and vegetables. Every sprig of ootton that was sbove the surface has been entirely killed, and many planters will hsve to replant their entire crops. If a large proportion of the land intended to be cultivated in cotton is now planted in corn, it will be better for the country, and the seeming misfor tune may, after all, prove a blessing in disguise. At a meeting of the Executive Com mittee of the State Agricultural So ciety, held in Raleigh, on Tuesday, the Secretary reported some 19,300 as having been subscribed by the city of Raleigh, and that a committee was still at work with a prospect of carrying the amount over $10,000. The whole grounds, when completed, will have cost some $32,000, and the Committee hope to reach this end without leaving the (Society in debt any more than it was before the change of grounds was proposed. The Raleigh Sentinel ssys : A negro named Henry Vass, formerly a slave of Ma, W. W. Vass, stabbed auother ne gro by the name of Jack Pool in the left shoulder, inflicting a serious wound and bending tne knife against the bone, on Tuesday night between 7 and 8 o'clock. ass is a fireman on the Ral eigh k Gaston Railroad. Ths stabbing occurred at Pool's house. A dispute arose between Vass and Pool's wife, the former indulging in some severe language, when Pool struck Vass and was stubbed in turn. Vass, at the time we write, is at large, but it is believed he will be captured before morning. The Fayetteville Eagle says : It is now said that the Republicans hsve de cided not to run a ticket at the town election to be held Monday. We hear that their committees and leaders have had several consultations and caucuses and so far have put forth no ticket If they run no ticket of their own, it is a piaiu aumission tnat tney coma not elect one. From all appearances the Republican party is weaker by sixty to seventy-five votes now than it was a year or two ago, while our party has the same strength as before, or more. As between a Conservative ticket, and a Republican ticket, the vote now would probably show about 100 Conservative majority. Under such prospects then, it seems no ticket is to be brought out. The Roanoke News says : Our read ers will remember the mention a short time since, of a difficulty at Duprecs X Roads in Northampton county. A few days ago Mr. Stephenson, Consta ble of Seaboard township, in that county, went to arrest Messrs. Dan nell and son, two of the parties to the affair. He secured them, and finding them nnable to give bail, started them to prison, after first divesting them of offensive weapons. After having pro ceeded some distance on the route to Jackson, the older Mr. Dannell asked of Stephenson, the constable, the loan of his xnife, which was readily grant ed. Mr. D. then stepped a few paces from the road and taking from his pocket a pistol, which he had before concealed, attempted to shoot himself. Failing in this he used the knife on his throat, .making a severe wound. Dr. Drewry was called in and dressed the wounds aud pronounced them trifling. Thej junior Dannell was taken to Jackson and confined in jaiL In 1812. Red Jacket, a celebrated Chief of the Seneca Indian tribe, (said to be the most eloquent orator of his day, white or Indian,) made a fare well address to CoL Snelling, a U. S. Army officer, in the following words: "Brother I hear you are going to a place called Governor's Island. I hope you will be a Governor yourself. I understand that you white people think children a blessinsr. I hone Ton may have a thousand. And, above all, l hope wherever you go you may never find whiskey more than two shillings a quart" , . - - . "You can't do too much for your employer," said a man to a hard shoul dered laborer.
