Emoblhaud. .Wilmington, June 12th, 187 J. -A Terrible rlkawsl, Mr. James Greenwood has published frightful account of the silent system hich is in operation at the Holloway Model Prison, in London : It ia au offence for a prisoner to peak one word, and he is never ad dressed except in whisper, so that he may be in prison two years without hearing the natural souudjof the hnman voice. The effect of all this is so ter rible ou the mind that prisoners will peak out In desperation, at the risk of any punishment, rather than endure that horrible silence. The prisoners never see another, but remain in perpetual solitude. One poor wretch, driven to desperatiou by uine mouths solitude and alienee, recklessly broke out in Mr. Greenwood's pres ence : "ForGod" snke, Governor, put mo iu another cell Put me somewhere else. 've counted the bricks, in the cell I am in, till my eye che,M The request ol the tortured wretch was refused. There i a fine hole in each cell, and as the warden wear shoe of India rubber soles, the prisoners can never be sure of being alone. Those condemned to the treadmill have to ascend 1,200 steps every alter nate twenty minute for six hours. And this in a place so hot and close that prisoners often lose in perspira tion three stone in as many months. Every day the prisoners are taken to a chapel so arranged that they can e no one but the chaplain, and lum only through an iron grating. And thus i the order ol devotion observed. Wardens are constantly on the watch, lest for a slight mutant they, through the whole of tho service, depart from the rigid rule of "eyes right." They must look steauiastiy at the preacher; must raise and lower their prayer-books wttn the eiiiows squared, nd all at once, like soldier at drill. They may not scrape their feet with out aitcrward having to explain the movemeut. They scarcely wink an eye or sigh without danger ol r.ibuke or punishment, (knl help them, poor wretches!
