From this standpoiLt the JorasAL msy be pardoned for the gratilcation it feels as it takes a brief glance at tbo record of political ivents in the year 1871. Tbe mystery ol Vlcksfearsr. The Vioksbnrg correspondent of the New York Times states that one re markable circumntsnoe in connection with the recent ftebt there is that no one seems to have been vrouided, and that not one negro out of prison will acknowledge having been engaged in the disturbances. Be adds: "Bow many were killed is a question which no one seems prepared to answer de finitely. A Republican offioe-holder tells me that not less than two hun dred were shot. Owens, who com manded the largest companyof uegroes, says that he is sure that not more than thirty were killed. A number of white men writr-were-n-tie-8gbt,-ad4n a position to boa everything that occur ed, state positively that not loss than fifty negroes fell. Where these men were buried is a mystery, and how they were conveyed from the battle field no one seems to know, I was careful to visit many "' if the cabins near Yieksburg, but was unable to find a wounded negro, or a household which had lost one of its members. Tbe colored people go about thir usual avocations as if nothing unusuil had happened, and as if they had sustained no loss. The whites have gone into mourning forK their dead, bnt the negroes continue to laugh, talk, danoe, and aing as if they had never known trouble of any kind. Notwithstanding the hard times, the United States internal' revenue re ceipts have exceeded the estimates by $2,600,000. Whioh shows that hard times or not, people will somehow contrive to Rot whisky and tobacco, the bulk of the revenue being derived from these soi' rces. t l.
