An old Wing ot tue best standing, he was ouoe the oaudi date of his party tor Governor ol North Caroliua, at a time when Whig asoenueuoy in the old ISortu btate ha beeu already lont. A, orilliaut oimivuhh tor Oovernor oould add nothing to John Kerr s fame, for he was an fa mo'us in North Carolina as waa Keu neth Ilayner, as Henry A Wise i Virginia, as Winter Davis in Mary 1 md, or Dick Meuifee in Koutuoky. Those were grand old days in Carolina poll lios wneu Uoorge ii liailger, WU Ho P. Manonm, OeorRe Davis, John Kerr, Hugh Wsddeli and Kenneth ltayner led the Whig hosts to the knightly tournament with the Demoo rscy whioh Bedford Brown, Bragg, lluffln aud Maunders championed And in those days John Kerr, of Cas well, was emineut, not only in Caro lina, but as an eloquent, cultured aud persuasive speaker in Congress. Borne people tnongbt that Judge Kerr bad a 'little too much Confederacy in Iub address, to make Democratic votea in Hew England, but there are few who liatcued to his glowing deolamation, and observed bla impressive presence that will need to be reminded of Judge Herr a Centennial oration. ' Ex-Oov. Wm. A. Graham received a large share of attention during the Centennial exercises, as he appeared nn eloquent epitome in name aud charac ter of the best phases of Carolina bis tory. and as he will long survive in the historic portrait-gallery of North Carolina. Twios Governor ol North Carolina, he was also Becretary of the iNavy under Fillmore, United Stilton senator, Confederate states Senator, and candidate for Vioe President on the Whig tioket with General Soo t in 1852. Bemote from the conspicuous seats on the platform was Alfred M. Wad- dell, who, next December will begiq his third term as a member of Con gress from tbe Cape Fear District. Handsome, genial, gifted, his attitude on the platform was suggestive of the modeatythat fitly adorns a knightly and chivalrous character, aud a per son that proclaims bia high lineage. OoL Wsddeli is honored and beloved throughout North Carolina with the ardor to which he is entitled. Of other noted Carolinians. Senator Merrimonwoa present, and ex-Gov.
