This abort article from theBalti- more sun is interesting,- ana win ue read with profit by our people. W have rarely seen more valuable infor mation oompretsod in to small a spaoe, and in so convenient a shape for re ferenoe t V' -; f"': A table recently prepared from official statements for 1873 and 1874, gives the taxable valuation and the rates of taxation in tbe several States, as varrinff all tbe way from 10 cents on the $100 in Con necticut to $2 15 on the $100 in Louis iana. The rate is SO oents in Alabama, Arkansas, California), Maine, Minnes ota, Texas and Virginia; 40 cents in Georgia, Kansas, Ohio and Tennessee; 7,0 cents in Florida, 10 cents in Con necticut, 24 cents la Illinois, IS cents in Maryland, 22 cents in Michigan, II 12 in Nevada, 72, oents in New York, 15 cents in Oregon, 20 oents in Rhode Island and 70 oents in South Carolina, . ;: ' j' iLil..z.iB..i'&) - - t i, UABD TIMES AND llOW TO MEND THEM. A HUT I'OI DtMSArlft. W read that a yonng man, recently a clerk in New Orleans, is now mak ing a crop of cotton, largely by his own idividnal exertions, in the parish of Concordia, La. He ha a partner, also an ex-clerk presumably, and they expect to gather 85 bales this season. Writing to ft friend in the Crescent City, this industrious youth Bays: I VriaVt T latkl rk sv wtna 1a ttm ri r wvmm a utjsu aw aw a wt ajua vsdaiww here for a week or so. I think I could employ them very profitably for about tea hours daily cutting out cotton." His dress at present, says the New Or leans Times, consists of ft black felt hat, hickory shirt, jean pants, and yel low russets. Mounted on his bay mule, wending bis wsy to the field, j thus apparelled, he thinks his old I friends would not be able to recognize him. When we consider how many thous ands of robust young men are this day idlers, says the Angusta Oorutltution alitt, and when there is so much land to be had for a mere song or the ask , ing, the mind turns with admiration to the intrepid Louisiana youth and with something like disgust to tbe drones in the hive. It may be that, t tbe first glance, the friends of the ex-clerk might not recognize him in . his working apparel; but when the identification came, how must the no ble-minded among men and women admire the ooarse garments of the true laborer more than the purple and fine linen of the idler. ' Last year, -we gave some signal, examples of what white boys, some of them at school during fire days of the t week, could do for themeelves in 5 the way of planting, We ahould be plesaed to hear, this season, of other experiments of that charaoter, for the purpose of giving public honor to the deserving, and, if possible, to shame those who are making no effort to help themselves or anybody else. The ' idler, unless he has money of his own or is encouraged In sloth by hi indul . gent parents, must prey upon society, and thus become a deadly and mortal nuisance to those who live laborious livrs. Ia the cify and country, the t'."ci ere t' r.t noa do nothing ered- itable in the wy of self-sustenance i eritably fall into bad LabiU and are curse to themselves and every body else. - The burden of tbe person o skives for " a sop port is made all the more grievous by the multiplicity of individuals who ire known as loafer in the city, and have been described, in country vil lages, a amusing themselves by "spit ting tobacco juice at a mark," and basking like flies on the counters sud steps of grocery stores, which are too often dramshops, purveying a quality of liquor that would consume Uie bow els of a brazen image, and really does provoke fatal altercations. It would be a grand thing for the South if ber non -producing idlers could gnt or be forced into useful employment Many young gentlemen, tenderly reared and highly cultivated, have demonstrated the practicability of becoming inde pendent by manual labor, ; . ' I i L, - " . - 'f From th LouUnlis Juui r J Mraal BJ the Od Tramp. Thi i a novel that bids' fair from the freshness and audacity of its plot, inni the gracttfuluees anil vigor of its style, ami from its variety and cuitrm of incident, to be the most popular novel of the year. Opening it iu the middle with no other expectation tliun to arrive at an ouderslaudiug of its merits iu a few - niinntus, o were in sensibly charmed into an Internet that oouipelled us not only to read to the end. but. upon reaching mat. to De- Kin at the beginning and read the whole, ttiat we might not lose a simile sraoeof tbe beautiful tale that had becruiled us of unheeded i hours in its perusal. In one sense it is a ensational novel, but it is of tbe hearty, healthy kind of sensation of the highest order, suoh as is seen in tbe best of Chas. lleade's stories. The heroes, of which there are several, are all handsome, athlutio, lucky and rich, and meet with astonishing and difficult adveutures, which they have Uie rare ability to bring to most suooetHf ul ter minations. TheOdd Trump is, of onurse, the most prominent of these heroes and deserves his title, llis au dacity, nerve aud talent are certuiuly odd, aud ao is his uuiversal suoo. Sober second thought will.hardly per mit U to say that the iumimera ble lueideutsin theoareerof thin youth ful paladin and bis brothers .in arms are at all propable orj likely to fall to the lot of average bank olerk and yonng gentlemen, either iu this or auy other ountury, but Uie charming manner iu which the tale is told fives but little room for sober seoona thought, and in fact we have doubt whether the representative no tion of the day can properly be judged by suoh thought, its aim is to amuse and delight, and where it oan do this without tlippenoy and immorality in nocently, heartily aud healthily it is deserving of the highest praise. This the novel before us does. Its inci dent are all pure, it ia the apotheosis of ohlvalrio bravery and curtesy, aud Is written in elegant Englinh with a purity of style that if in itnelf refresh, lug. The scene of Uie Story is laid in Eugland, and one of the; prin- einal character ia a votincr American who might oertainly stand as the type of the brave aud gallant Houtuornar, the beau ideal of tho knight of Uie nineteenth century, master of J every accomplishment, aave that of speakiug his own language oorreotl y handsome, virtuous, rich without fear and with out reproach, and impossible The suthor has withhold his name: but it oannot long be conosaled. It is des tined try become widely known and admired, for there it an exuberauoe of promise manifest in ever tage of this brilliant novel that is oertaiu to bear fruit in other and even 1 better books. That the author is a South erner is alone certain. If this is a first attempt, a new star of the first magnitude has appeared iu the galaxy of Southern authors. If an rxpen- enoed hand had chosen to send forth a ventnre anonymously to tbe world, fresh laurels will be added to the wreath, whosoover may wear it. EL J.
