The Democratic Executive Commit tee of the second Congressional Dis triot met In this place on Monday Sfpt. ISth. The meeting was called to order by A. J. Galloway Esq., Cbairman of the Committee, and, af. ter freely discussing our Congressional prospects the Committee agreed unan imously to hold a Convention in GoWsboro on Tuesday Sept. 28, Each connty OMght to send delegates who will vt for an active, wide-woke and ctfeotive caavasser. The Charlotte Obterver says; At-'.orney-General Iv nan . speaks at Aatesville on Tuesday next. We Jon't know how many speeches he a as made since the campaign opened, but he has shown more zeal and in dustry in tljo canvass than the whole State ticket combined. We hope the ;ood. people of Iredell will extend him i hearty welcome. A man of di'siu- ne appearance, an enteitauung peaker,' a chivalric. and hightoned entleman with pcpular and affable inannerk. he is winning hosts of friends throughout the State. 7Fe take great pleasure in this mention of his able and ValuaMo services to the party, because . we have known him well and Ion?, and known him to be as modest as be is brave and true. tiieews Ann itsr.itvi:t. V The' two daily papers so well and so favorably known to the re&dingl public as the Ralaigh News and the Raleigh Observer hove been raerged into one, and will henceforth be known as the (etcs and Observer, The own ership of the paper remains with Ashe, Gatlin Sfc Co.. tho business man agement is in the hands of Col. L. L 1 Polk, and the editorial control has been entrusted to S. A Ashe ?tbe former " editor of the O? -server- -a graceful, rolished and trenchant writer. This is indeed a most powerful combination for good, and .we can safely predict ; thai the reign of usefulness, which will follow this united and well directed etwr;, will be among the most brilliant and enduring triumphs known to the f inals f Southern jo'irnalisra. : Tte departure ot P. M. ."IUle Esq. . from the field of journalism just a8 this important juncture of affairs is i' articularly deplorable ; for his sage counsels, ripe exper.ence, and cogent diction would have been felt to tbe serious detriment of opposing host. J?ut while his valiant - services will be missed, we know that his maulle will full on shjolders most worthy to bear it; and though we may not hear the ponderous blows of the heavy battle axe of Richard cceur de leon falling with destruction upon the serried pha lanx of the enemy, still w will behold th radiant flashes of the cimeter ot Saladdin c!caving the Vay to victory and to glory. Our adieu to the de parting, and our congratulations to the remaining Journalists. The "Dutch have taken Holland" as usual, or fn otb-sr words Vermont has gone republican by the usual ma jority. Tho "republican star that never sets," shines undnnmrd in the republican firmament. The Vermon ters take to republicanism naturally 'ike Epliraim of old, they arc ' joined to their idols,'' but they are a -feeble fold," and not able' to dj much of the voting in the Presidential election. Vermont has always been under Re publican rule, and is remarkable for five tilings according to the Rutland Enquirer viz : It has the largest per cent of crime. The lowe9t wages. The least gain in population. It drinks the most rum. And it has tho largest republican majority. A II V(JI Republican politcians are greatly disturbed at the idea of a change in the administration of the goverment. They say why not let well enough alone that the co intry is prosperous, its finances upon a safe footing, and its commercial and industrial interests in a flourishing con lit'.on. And tbey argue that a change, would bedisas-i .trous to the peace and' prosperity '.of the country. In tbe first place we deny that we are indebted to the republican party for the measure of prosperity Which the country enjoys. In . the second place, we deny that we are indebted to a party twbich lias attained the un enviable reputation of .. bing a party of hate, and which has been depen dent for its success hertofore upon keeping alive the passions and pre ju dices of. the past, for whatever of fraternal feeling, bave been restored, to the lately belligerant sections. . Rut do we not necif a changer?' Do n,ot the best interests of the jcountry imperatively, demand it? We have lately seen in what ' direction the re publican party is driftl-i. It cannot have escaped the nobt tr.; eless obser ver that it has for a long time seri ously contemplated a ra heal change n our government, by which the States would be stript of their-Sovereignty that it has been intended to erect upon the ruins, of-the govcrment of our Fathers, a stroiigceutral, irresisti ble government. Abundant instances might be cited to show that it favors an arbitrary government,- tho subordination of Civil to Military authority, and the introduc tion of 'a code of morality as corrupt as that . which preceded the down fall of the Roman Republic. Its can didate for the Presidency stands ac cused by his own party of Bribery and Perjury its candidate for the Vice Presidency lately removed f om the cel!e;torship of New York, lOf-corruption in office. The time h: s Q tie we think to retire this, party to the 'shades ot private life.' ! . THK .U 1K ElJiCnO.I.-i WA TI'llLOO DITKAT Ot1 The election, which took place in Elaine on Aionaav last, resuiteq in a signal defeat of the Radical party, and is a sure prccusor ot still greater d s aster to that party which has so long governed the country in corruption and hate. In the strong bed of. -Radicalism, away up in the extreme North, the popularity of I lan cock has , over shadowed all .oppcsiltou. All the eloquence of lihuue and tho corrupt money wrung from Federal office holders-availed" nothing.' The accus tomed innjori'v of Radicalicm has been wiped out of exigence and the Pine Tree Slate ranges herself alon" side of the sclid South in favor of honest govcrnmeot, peace and rccon citation between the . sections, the riohts of the ncon!i sinrl fmaAum f elections. The resmlt in Maine not only indicates the election of Ilancqck andEnglisli in November, but admin- isters a deserved rebuke to a party. which would perpetuate its power at the point of the bayonet and over the lihert5e& of the neonlr nr,f , j--. nij J or the coantry. 1 ho election of a Democratic Governor in Maine is indeed a great victory, and one which wiH send a thrill ol j to the hearts of patriots in every sec'fion ot our common crura trr. It shows that cr ruption cannot grow.lang in al free country ; it show that the reign of the -bloody shirt" has passed by ; it starts a new era In the country's his tory ; it ends the life of Radicalism, and welcomes I he dawn of a brighter future when hateuod sectionalism and fraud will find no abiding place on American soil. At this iPte we have not the full re turns of the election, but enough is known to insure a Radical defeat. Besides the Governor, that party loses three members of Coagreis out of five where ten days ago BUine claimed with, confidence the election of the Governor and the whole delegation in Congress.! The victory is no less sur prising than grstifying. It goes to show beyond doubt that General Han cock is mure popular with the masses of the people than tbe leaders dreamed of. It was ndmitled on all sides that his great purity of character both as a soldier and statesmau made him a strciig candidate, but this election in Maine gives greater emphasis to his popularity aud makes his election as sure as possible for uny future event. The doubt which has heretofore hung over Indiana iu dispelled, and even Ohio, another Radical 3tate is with reason classed in the column of Demo cratic States. There need De no more ta'k about the solid'South. Such; ap peal o the prejudices and passions of the North has lost its po'rer for mischief, for with Hancock at the head Northern people know they will be safe, and the rallying cry of the cam paign in the future should be a solid country, solid North as weil as South ; solid for the liberties of the people, solid for the rights of the State, i and solid against sectional hate.
