DIIEAUERS AHEAD. .Tehostilefactions thal now divide the Republican party appear to have embarked In a regular Kilkenny fight. Bitter disappointments, growing out of the rank luxuriance of success, have added intensity to the conflict which has been going on, since the 4th- of March. Tho struggle for the spoils of Office has developed antagonisms, and revived animosities, which threaten the destruction of the most powerful political organization, that has ever controlled this country. A great par ty, after twenty years uninterupted possession of the government, finds itself brought to the verge of dissolu tion, by contending factions over the distribution of the offices, and the so callled "recognition" of the leaders, who claim to have decided the Presi dential election. !; The discontent is not confined to the Conkling interest, as that has shown itself to be, and of this the ad- minstration seems to be fully aware. Forltis bnwidly intimated, . that as soon as the President has disposed of the Conkling rebellion, he proposes to turn his attention to Cameron of Penn sylvaniathen Logan of Illinois. He h credited with the intention of des troying the Boss system in republican politics. Wherever a State Ross rears his head, the Administration banner is to be planted, and a determined campaign of aggression inaugurated Like the powerful Barons of the Mid die Ages, these State Bosses have grown i insolent and defiant, and hence the necessity of a crusade against the ' triumvirate, Conklin Cameron, and Logan. The gage of battle has been thrown down in New York and accepted, and the light that has been going on for several weeks over the vacant sena torships has been after the mo.?t Im proved style of family quarrel. In the great states of Pensylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Mich igan, there Is a deadly feud between the two wings of the party, the third term and .the administration. There appears also to be a third faction, here tofore adverse to the third term, but now willing to cooperate with them, in order to break down the Administra tion. The breach widen every day, and of causes of quarrel it; may be said i A JUDGMENT." t J The persistent eflbrts of certain leading Republicans to make prohibi tion a political issue has not, so far, met with success. Notwithstanding the "snap judgment" attempted to be taken, by a portion of the executive Committee at a called session recently held in Raleigh, we think, that there is no reason to apprehend that it will be made a party question. With such distinguished republican leaders as Judges Rcade, Dick, Russell and By num, and such prominent politicians as Messrs. Ball, Smith, King of lu noir, Robinson and many others, all advocating prohibition, we do not think Cannaday, Cooper, Moore, Har ris, and a few other intense partisans, will be able to array any considerable portion of the Republican party at this late day, in opposition to the pro hibition movement. The case fairly stated is, that both leading Democrats and Republicans advocate and oppose prohibition that "they have uniform ly both in the Legislature, and since its adjournment, ' deprecated and dis- DISGRACEFIL IRE, PBOCEED- stronger deeper that "Time but the impression makes, .s streanw their channels . The project ofa balloon trip across the Atlantic, after seven years of sus pension on account of the Wise-Donaldson "fiasco," is now revived by King aeronaut. In order to demon strate the feasibility of keeping a balloon imitated long; enough for the purpose he will, it is said, undertake a Journey from the Atlantic Coast to the Rocky Mountains. : j The monument which the former pupils andfriends pf Chief Justice Pearson had purchased; was unveiled last week in Raleigh at Oakwood cem etery.. There was a 'large crowd in attendance. At night Judge Dick de livered an appropriate and eloquent address on the life and ervices of tho distinguished jurist who has passed away. ; j courageci an attempts, to mate it a party question. We publish tlie pro ceedings of the meeting elsewhere and invite the attention of our readers to them, to see the lameness of the at tempt of a few "irrepressibles" to di vert a great moral movement into political channel. W hen they succeed in lottling up a tempest, converting the Mississippi river into a fish pond or dipping the ocean dry with a spoon they may attempt to arrest and util i.e ior partisan purposes, the great tidal v.aveof prohibition, which is sweeping over this -country and Eu rope, cleansingand purifying society, and ameliorating and elevating tlie human race. The treaty of Washington, has been rejected by Gen. Wlckham, Jorgensen, and the leaders of the Republican party, aud an address has been issued by the Re publican Executive Committee urging the faithful to stand by their colors. XXCPtTII'LICA! DEADLOCKS. The deadlock in the New York Legislature still continues with little prospect of electing Senators to fill the vacancies occasioned by; the resigna tion of Conkling and Piatt, during the present session. After a great number of ballotings the situation remains un changed. The friends of Conkling , and the friends of the Administration seem equally determined to fight it out, "if it takes all the summer." The main interest now seems to control in the bribery investigation, which has been going on at the Capitol for sever al days, in which the Bpeaker of the House, a Senator and a Representative are implicated. ! j The Republican Legislature of New Hani pah ire ,.now in session is wrestling with a similar difficulty in electing a United Btatea Senator to succeed Sen ator Rollins. f j - These Republican deadlocks, indi cate a demolished conditIon of tba Re publican party,, which affords hopeful figns of ita speedy dissolution.. A worse divided household than the Great Republican Party now is, it would be difficult to find, and the highest authority Jjas pronounced the sentence, "A lionse- divided Against it?elf, cannot stand." f. t JUDICIARY REFORM. The elevation of Stanley 3IatheM s to the Supreme Court Bench has been regarded by many as "the last feather on uie juaiciai camels-back." Con stituted as the Supreme Court now is, one case of softening of the brain, one paralytic, two men engaged in the lAuiisania iraud, and a majority of uie oaiance or them engaged in the ITesidential Commission fraud of 187G, all of whom hold their offices for life, the American people are confronted by an evil of such magnitude, as to create no little alarm. The trouble seems to be, to Murfrest a remedy to cure this fungus terror, on the body politic. Now Henry Clay 'IXian of Kansas, recommends that the Suireme Court Judges be here after .elected by the qualified voters of their Circuits respectively, for a term not exceeding ten years, nor allow them to serve after they are 70 years old. That the Circuit and District Judges of every Court of the United States, be in like manner elected and be responsible directly to the people at the ballot box for their conduct on the bench. That the United States "wiuoa uiiu iuarsnaLs ho mat tue sum tienositod w nmniv elected by thn quaUfied voters of the iwient,. h tit they have signified to the respectively. The. election! We have refrainel heretofore from alluding to the rumored Operations of Mr. Best, because of the secrecy with which his railroad movements have generally been invested ever since his aprearanee m this "State. i When he abandoned his contract with the State, or rather assigned it to the Richmond & Danville Railroad Company, we thought that his connection with the Western North Carolina Railroad and its extensions to Paint Rock and Duck town, had permanently terminated. His attempt to prevent the election of a President of the road last spring, and his threatened suit toreeover pos session, we regarded as the expiring efforts of disappointed mn. Recently we have seen notices ofa renewal of his claims, backed bv Northern Capitalists as lefore, but having had so much to say about him and his projects in the past, we had concluded to await such future devel pents, as might teem ta inspire con fidence in his ability to carry out his plans, before referring to the subject again. We now learn from th-e Raleigh News-Of)mrerf that, "On Saturduv. last, Mr. Best, on behalf of the con struction company which proposes to build the Midland Railway and carry out the original North Carolina sys tem from Beaufort harbor to its Ten nessee connections at Paint Rock and Ducktown, deposited with Senator L. Ji. v ance, Governor T. J. Jarvis and Treasurer J.' M... Worth, Commis sioners of the Western North Carolina Railroad, elected by the General As sembly at its special -.session of 1880, the sum of $250,000, with which to re imburse the Richmond & Danville Railroad Company, for all expendi tures made by that company from the time of the defection of Mr. Best's associates up to the present Mr. Best has called upon the Rich mond fe Danville Railroad authorities for an account of such expenditures (which has not yet beei ; rendered ) with the view of tendering the exact amount, which would repay them for the money they have disbursed in prosecuting the work on both branches of the Western North Carolina Rail road, with interest, ' and also make proper compensation for any trouble thrown upon them by their coming to his assistance. The construction Com pany have good reason to believe Rev. Jos. E. Carter in his speech in Rocky Mount last Saturdays We learn , from a geutleman who was present that his manner was most disgusting. When Mr. Carter liad fin ished, he began a senseless, obscene, vulgar jharangue in opposition to Pro- j hibition which was so indecent that the town authorities were compelled to have him arrested. We believe in fair play, and we res pect any man who expresses his honest convictions whether he be favor ofor opposed to prohibition, but we most unhesitatingly condemn any man who seeks to be a champion of a measure Mho has not the self respect to use language to which a lady may not listen. We do not sav this because Mr. Sharp is a Republican, because we respect an honest Republican who conducts himself properly, and would not cast a slur on his character, but when, any man be he Democrat or Re publican , Greenbacks, Proh ibltion ist or Anti-Prohibitionist, we can but place him in his proper light before the public. sensation, and sensations are in just now. order - Reliable. It is useless to deny the great curative 'effects of Simmons Liver Regular. Its virtues are at tested by thousands who have used the medicine, and is now largely in demand. The investigation from the start ha been unsatisfactory, because of the ap parent disposition to shield .some one. it nas oecn intimated that Ex-Sec retary ; Sherman is the person whom Mr. Pitney is trying' to shield. BLAWE. The New York Sun says that Mr. Blaine, the Secretary of State, is not only seriously, but alarming-ill. HLs most intimate friends, 'personal as well as political , have seldom been able to see him of late, when they have called at his residence. The -Xetcs-Obserter says: "It is impossible to be lieve that any Company of gentlemen who are so entirely identified with North Carolina and so largely depend ent upon North Carolina patronage, as are the Richmond & Danville Railroad company, would think for a moment of hindering a scheme of such va-t importance to the State.
