ellen
l Richmond, Ini., February 28. On
openi ng the door of the country school
house, . situated one mile north of
Salem, Adams county, this State,' this
morning, some children; discovered
the toucher, Miss Emma Numbers, ;
lying on -the floor .with one arni cut
off, her tongue torn out and her, neck
pinned to the flooring with a large
dirk knife. A subsequent ' examina
tion showed that she had been brutal
ly assaulted after a desperate strug
gle, and that she had then been stab
bed to death- with the knife. Before
leaving her assailants (as it is believed
that one man did not commit the deed
alone) had cut her tongue out to make
sure that she would not recover and
divulge their names. After the last
. blow the knife was -left in hir ,neck,
the point passing nearly through the
boards in the floor. A search was 'at
once institutedl but -.the ."'perpetrators
have not yvt - been discovered. The
school houe, stands on alow, swampy
- piece ofland, which divides the waters
of the St. Lawrence friun those of the
-Mississippi. -"one nassintr off-throu-ih
