Beaman's grove, to witness and enjoy the lirst grand picnic ol the season, to take place in this neigh 1m irhood, at an early hour; buggies ami vehicles of all kinds, shafte and form commenced to roll in and about ten o'clock the crow d w as estimated at altout live hundred. Dancing was in order at Hie usual time and continued until two o'clock, when ("apt. Edwards in a few remarks invited the large 4-rowd to the well filled tables, ami as a mat fer of course every lnxly, yoiingaud old, was eagerly "waiting and watching for thee," (dinner I mean). The long and elegantly ar ranged tables wire' over laden with delicacies of all kinds. Not for many years, has it been my good fortune to witness such a magnificent dis play of good things on a picnic table. I must say right here that too much credit cannot be given Messrs. Charlie P. Farmer, K; A. Darden, Willie M. Darden, the affable man agers 'of the picnic for the numer ous kindness and pleasures shown to all on this i very enjoyable tH-ca-sjoii. The ladies too who partici pated in the management of the table are well worthy of praise- Im mediately after dinner dancing was resumed ami continued until late in the afternoon when the large crow d dispersed and returned to their res pective homes well pleased with the delightful leshvities ot the day. I have neglected to mention the fact that excellent music was lurnishcd during the. day by the Messrs. Mat tox Bros. vtVStautonsburg. There were very few -newspaper -men on hand. ' '..'The picnic I can truly say was a grand success in every respect. 1 was sorry that the editor ot" the Au VANCK was not on hand to represent both himself and paper. Several prominent names hav already been mentioned for the various county officers. Luby Har jier, Kso,., and (a. jolly ohlsoiil is he) w ill continue' to fireside over our county as Sheriff'. He is the right man in the right place. The'uiany friends of Capt. Win. A. Darden will urge his name for the Legislature lietore the next -Nominating Convention of this county. Capt. Darden is a man of rare intellect and a capital speaker. He has done more for the Demo cratic party than any other man in the county, and notwithstanding his true Democratic principles, lie. is popular w it lidl classes of people. 'Notwithstanding the cold spring spell cotton is looking very well in some 'places and growing rapidly.-. The corn crop down here is looking 'exceedingly fine, ami the wheal crop is the largest that has been harvested in t his section for many years. The oat crop has also turned out very well. Wilson i was given, and proved to be a most enjoyable occasion, as is always the case with Prof. Wilson's entertain ments aud this one is said to have lteeu one of his liest. Every part of the programme was attractive, but the quartet with four guitars by tw o gent leineii and two ladies w ho had lieen under Mi. Wilson's instruc tion Was particularly enjoyable. It has not lieen our pleasure for a long time to listen to such an instructive, entertaining discourse. The ' name .of his theme was so suggestive the characteristics of the man, and I as in all things else he certainly suc! ceeded on this occasion in captivat ing his audience. The, discourse was full of the best of good hard sense and practicability and at times eloquence, wit and humor seemed to vie for the up: perliand, the audience now lieing in almost breathless silence ami now and again convulsed with rounds of laughter which in tine or two instances continued irrepres sible for such a length of time as to compel the '.speaker to await its subsidence. We record with sorrow the death of Miss Bettie Barnes, daughter of our countyman Edwin Barnes, Sr., at her fat hers residence, eight miles from Wilson w hich sad event occur red at, 11:40 Monday night of this i week, in the 20th vear of her aire. Miss Barnes was a .most estimable young lady and was greatly lieloved by all w ho knew her for her moral excellence and amiability. She was a consistent member of the Metho dist church and died with the full assurauce of a heavenly home. Her funeral took place Wednesday even ing, Eev. W. H. Call officiating. .
