Jscilus Daniels. Editor nl Frpriflr. Friday Morning. May 11. The Difference. The Star contends that the election of Mr. Uandall would be unfortunate for the Demo cratic party, and like the Louis ville Courier-Journal bitterly opposes his election. On the other hand, the Pitts burg Post a leading Deinucratic paper of the North, says if the policy recommended by the Co urier -Journal on the tariff question be j adopted by the Democratic party, "that Penn sylvania, Ohio and Connecti cut will not be decidedly doubtful, but decidedly sure against a candidate repre senting such views. . The other .States! the Demo crats claim in the North Kast . of the Mississippi are New Jer sey, Indiana and New York, with flfty-fivej electoral votes. There are enough Cemocratic workingmen in these three States to turn the scales against the party, and with thousands to spare, should a free trade platform be foisted on it. Just what Northern State can be carried for the Democracy on such a .platform, we confess ourselves unable ty discover It would put Maryland, Dela ware, West Virginia and even old Virginia in the doubtful list. This is the frolic to which Watterson invites the party. We guess it won't dance to his music. Not by a large majori- Democrats in different sec tions of the Union never did and never will agree exactly as to details on the tariff, and a spirit of intolerance towards one another should not be enter tained or encouraged. The Radical party iii its admihistra ; tion of the government has been noted for gigantic frauds corruptions and reckless Viola tions of the Constitution. The only way to dislodge that par ty is to keep the Democrats united. This way of denounc ing . Democrats; of life-long standing and ordering them to take buck seats and predicting great evils on account of the election of either Carlisle or Randall is full of '-harm. We are glad to know 'that we have a Democratic Congress which can elect either.; Randall has been speaker and make a good one. Carlisle possesses the qual ifications and will no doubt make a good one also. They are both good Democrats and will labor for the success of our cause and the prosperity of the ''country. Let Democrats xtop splitting hairs over tariff for revenue out, or tariff for revenue with incidental rotei'lion. The difference be tween the two phrases is no more than between tweedledum and tweedledee. by enormous bills of costs? Many . penniless widows and orphans would have rejoiced if such a. law" had existed, and the peace and harmony of many families wonld have re mained undisturbed. Like our contemporary of the Chatham Record, "we doubt not that Michigan's new law will soon be adopted by a majority of the States, and men may be enabled to die with the assurance that their sanity cannot be question ed by their disappointed heirs." Ex-fiov. BrogdeiTs Letter. The letter addressed by Kx Gov. Brogden to this paper, several weeks since, contains many suggestive points, to some of which, our Democratic contemporaries have invited public attention. There is one to which we propose to refer, which without entirely having escaped notice, has nt been given the prominence, which .Its importance-merits. We re fer, to' -the "wild hunt after office," which, among Republi cans in this State, has resulted in breaking down all their most prominent leaders. With a modesty' becoming the position which he occupies, he indirect ly warns the Democratic party against the danger of commit ting a like fatal blunder.' It will be remembered that he said, as soon as a Republican leader became prominent and appeared likely to secure a hold uxou public confidence, hungry office-seekers commenc ed undermining, him, and labor ing generally with success, to destroy his popularity. Gov. Brogden might have said truth fully 'I regret to observe the same tendency in that direc tion in the Democratic party." There is too much selfishness, .1 .1.. I too ilium personausm in our i ranks. Principles not men," miist.be the battle cry to victo-rv. tection. The position of the Star reminds us of the fellow who tliot at the calf mistaking him in the woods for a deer. When reminded that he might have killed his neighbor's calf replied that there was no dan ger of that hat he took aim so as to kill it if it was a de and miss it if wasr a calf. So with: the Star, on an encJhomic question, when $40,0000 were saved to the countnf Mr. Ran- Tdall had no more power than any other Democratic member but if elected SpealW now on an economic questioiK he will have great power as aSpeaker, O, consistency, thou art a - jew- el. . ; . MISCEL LANEO US. 1865 S COCK AIK A L i LI' WORKS The Star does not consider Mr. Randall a sound Democrat and worthy of confidence, neither is Gen. Hancock ac cording to our cotemporary's test. Hancock is pronounced a 'half and .half protectionist By the same test, McPherson of New Jersey, all the Demo crats of Pennsylvania, (for the Statesman's communication in the Star pronounces them all protectionists) Voorhees and McDonald, of Indiana, Gov, Brown, of Georgia, Hewett, of Alabama, all the membersTof Congress from Louisana, the old Roman . Senator, Eaton of Connecticut and the great bulk of Northern Democrats, who haye stood as break water be tween us and Northern fanati cism, would all be considered unworthy. If such a' rule is adopted the Democratic party wTill be left in a pitiable con dition. It will be like, the dog with his tail cut off close behind his ear-;. Spare1 That Tree. . Why Any "Difference? Tha Star twits us for saying that we did not believe one in fifty cared who was elected Speaker, and quotas several prominent Democrats who are opposed to Randall. We might quote an equal number who would regard, his defeat a mis fortune. But that would not be conclusive as to the point at issue. We are still of the opin ion that nine tenths of the Democrats regard it immaterial which one of the distinguished gentlemen mentioned should be elected.- And if il should be deemed best for the -sake of harmony to Withdraw all three I In the darkest hours of Southern trials and oppressions j in those times when the South j was at the mercy of a merciless and ruthless majority of Iiad- icals in Congress ; when South ! ern States were over-run by ! Federal bayonets and Legisla tures disperseed by the sword it was then that Hancock in terposed his shield in our be half, it was then that Randall arose in Congress in the face of a large Radical majority and by his firmness and parliamentary skill drove the vandals from their vile purpose of degrading the South and defeated the infamous "Force bill." This is a radical de parture from the old law which has existed for centuries, and will doubtless lie Condemned by those, wlio are accustomed to look with jealousy upon de partures from the ancient land marks. While many of the innovations and changes which have been made in this age of progress, mu4 be admitted to be of questionable -propriety we think the. purpose of this new law is highly commenda ble. If generally adopted, it would remove a large class of litigation, which not unfre quently defeats the will of the testator, from our courts, and what is more to the interest of society and the advancement of christian civilization, it would check the spirit of greed which so often results in fami ly estrangement. The plea of unsoundness of mind, or other testamentary incapacity, is too often urged by those who fail to get the share of the testator's property to which they con ceive themselves entitled, when the "sound mind and disposing memory" of the testator had never been questioned during his life time.
