The Durham Daily riant has entered upon its second year It is a good local daily wel edited, ana does good service , for Durham. LET US HELP OURSELVES. As a result of the meeting conducted at Greensboro , by Rev. Mr. Pearson 400 people professed conversion. That man is an instrument in the hands of God in doing great good, we believe. Joiix R. Smith, ex-Sheriff of Wayne county, has been ap pointed postmaster at Golds boro. He is probably more ac ceptable to the people of that town than any Republican in the county. Abmouk, the big meat man of Chicago, has established as in dustrial shool for boys and girls. Would that some of our monied men could feel a prac tical interest in the children of this community. Dr. O. S. Owen, of Anderson, S. C, who was killed by his stepson, was beating his wife at the time. This is a pretty good fate for wife beaters. Let the verdict be "justifiable homi cide," and the young man re leased. 1 The Lenoir Topic of last werli had a suggestive paragraph about the tendency of our North Carolina folks to wait for "Northern capital" to come down here and set us on the highway to prosperity. "North ern capital" is highly desirable in the South, but that com munity thaj sits down and waits for it to come and turn to accoilnt those "undeveloped resources," of which we all like to talk, will almost inevitably get left. It is rarely ever put at work in the South except in some locality where Southern capital had already begun to "develop" something, and not always then, by any means. Certainly the Southern section is the most promising portion of this country for outside in vestment, but after all the hope of the South is in the capital and pluck and business tact of its own people. Outside in fluences may come and help; we hope they will ; but they can at best be but co-operative forces the basis of our pros perity is in ourselves. And the longer we remain supine and cry for "Northern capital" the longer we -will be in learning what iEsop's teamster learned : that Hercules only helps the man who puts his own shoulder to the wheel. Statesville Landmark. Truer words are seldom spoken. Wilson has plenty of capital and unemployed labor to do great things if our own people would go to work. We need a cotton seed oil mill; (and we will soon have one) another cotton factory ; a can ning factory ; a furniture fac tory ; and numerous other fac tones mat produce or add a new value to something. But worse than all these do we need better schools. May there be a general awak ening in the near future and may our past achievements be but stepping stones to further educational and material de velopment. Let us one and all determine to go to- work to maKe the town we all love so well the peer of any ia the State in everything. ed with evergreens and flowers in front ot the stage, which was" taste fully decorated, with the word ''welcome" in golden letters, and the rare backgiuund with similar letters of green, "God bless our State." The youDg ladies were dressed in the most approved style ofthfl ''sweet girl'graduate,'- whilst a good ' amateur strmg band dis coursed sweet music at intervals. Mr. Moore has had the school in operation' for ten years and the liberal patronage given it by the community is good evidence of the excellence of its management and the performance of the pupils evidenced that due care, had been bestowed on their minds by their instructors. The 1 school baa now some forty pupils and will be resumed on the 3rd Mouday in July next. The reason that Concord is so blessed with factories is that her people "pull together." If Wilson would show the unani mity of feeling and sentiment L that actuates that town, many hundred more bales' of cotton might be utilized at home and people benefitted. An English clergyman de scribed his church as of the lonie order of architecture, and said, "Over the portico is a tow er, over that a cupola and- on the top of all a mortgage." The last mentioned adornment rests on top of many a palatial dwelling, many a splendid farm and . many a handsome store. We need fewer archi tectural beauties of this char acter in this portion of the moral vineyard. The first reports 3ent out rel-i ative to the Johnstown horror in the Conemaugh valley prove to be correct. The . loss of life will -probably foot up 10,000 or 15,000. Now that the first shock has ended the work of remov ing tho wreckage Las begun in dead earnest. As yet the work has been solely by vojunteers. It is estimated that at least 1, 000,000 will be required to re move the debris from Cone maugh valley. Yesterday the State of Pennsylvania official ly took hold of the work under the lead of Gov. Beaver. But for some time to come the peo ple of Johnstown and villages in the vicinity will be dependent upon charity for all they eat and wear, so there is need of all the aid possible. The funds heretofore raised, it is gratify ing to know, were sufficient to meet the pressing emergencies of the case. For nearly two weeks the hungry has been fed, the naked clothed, the home less sheltered, the dead buried, and other necessary services performed. Thank God for the abounding charity of our American people. But the end is not yet. It will be weeks-be-f ore these peeple can do ny thing for self and they must be fed: They will not be allowed to suffer, of. that, we. feel assured. Scotnd Neck Democrat, June 6th. Mrs. Lo.nn, aged 95 years, and mother of Mr. Joe Dick Long, died at her home m Edgecombe county, near this place, last Tuesday. The crops throughout this sec tion, althongh bady damaged by the recent heavy rains, are not ruined, and in many Instances are looking wen. l ne largest damage was in the river low grounds. Last Saturday a team belonging toCapr. T. W. Battle, loaded with a lot of his hands and several bar rens of Hour was overturned in attempting to cross a swollen stream near here. .The mnles were saved by being cut from the wagon, the flour was ruined and tne ne groes badly frightened. There is now an educational crisis in the history of Wilson. Unless the people of the town come to the rescue we will go backwards. Those men who op posed the Graded cchool be cause (as they said) without it we would have better schools, would do well to come to the front and help us to secure these Detter sc-hools. There must be a more generous ap preciation of our schools and a more general co-operation of the people, or we will be left far behind in the march of prog ress. "Let us then be up and doing."
