ETllie advance endeavors to do an Hon est, faithful and Impartial chronicler of the news, devotinjr pecial attention to the lection n which It fsubllshed. It Is Democratic to the core arut wl U inin neither friend or- foe wno is in Hostility to uemocrauo success. 1 believes the best Interest of the Na tion and the State imperatively demands the retention of the Democratic party in power and it will spare no effort to accomplish that result. It will seek to promote the in dustrial development of the State and section .nd wiB take oleasure in doing- whatever lies in its power to aid the farmers and laboring . rn.cn la their efforts to better their condition. Bverv honest son of toil will find in the Ad fA.sc a sincere friend. Every effort looking to the establishment of more and better edu cational Institutions will receive our hearty xMvperation and endorsement. The Adtaici circulates largely In every county East of Raleigh, and is therefore a spl endid advertising medium. Bates liberal. A first-class Job office is run In connection with the paper and we will be pleased to re ceive orders. Our office is one of the best , equipped in th section of the 8tate for com ' aercial work and we will do as good, work and at as low flsrures as anybody. Entered Ic the Post Office at Wilson, N. C aa second clab mail matter. WILSON. N. C. Auo, ,28th, 1890. The golden weed will make this section the garden spot of North Carolina. The' cause of public educa tion has received strength from the Alliance that was sadly needed., It looks now as if Simmons will be the man to beat Cheat ham in the 2nd District. Ox ford Day. ; " Education is the lever that lifts the, universe. Our people must secure more leverage for lifting this corner of the afore said universe. The Advance has time and again column after colomn denounced the present high and burdensome tariff, and, as a matter of course, the Alliance demands a reduction. The man who speaks his hon est sentiments is seldom popu lar, but he has the respect of people among whom he lives, and that is far preferable to be ing popular. ; i. ' - - Cheatham has been renomi nated for Congress by Repub licans of this district. If Sim moils is the Democratic nomi nee Cheatham 'will remain at home. A negro by the name of E. E. Smith was appointed Minister to Liberia by" Mr. Cleveland. The statement is now made that he has been removed by Harrison and Alexander Clarke. of Iowa, appointed in his place. I Ihe Advance has . shown for the past twenty years its fideli ty to the interest of the farmers. If all these years of labor speak for nothing then words would be useless and talking a weariness to the soul. jlhe advance does not now believe there is the least dan ger of the defeat of Senator Vance. His friends and ad mirers all over the State have made his return a certainty by their action in instructing their Representatives for him. We are proud that Wilson set the example. : We feel gratified at the nomination of Col. N. B. Whit field, as the candidate of the L.enoir county Demi crats for the House of Representatives. There is no better man in that county filled with good people than Col. Whitfield. We know him, for while we" lived in that county and did what lay in our power forkthe Democratic party, Col. Whitfield was always found fighting for the cause of Democracy. He is, of course, a Vance man. He will make a legislator of whom the county will feel proud. .Miss Mamie Rolin Stdbes has -retired from the editorial charge of the Oxford Orphans' Friend and Miss Mattie Roun tree succeeds her. The paper under Miss Rountree's manage ment shows that no mistake has been made in . placing the paper in her hands, There are evidences of firsUclass news paper talent displayed. But we know, the j young editress and expect good work from her. She baa ideas she uses vnru lancrnn.irw nni HI appreciated by the subscribers to the paper and the press. We extend our best wishes and Welcome her to the trother hood. . The Shelby Aurora is one of the best and most progressive newspapers in the. State. FREEMAN- Taylors, N. C, Aug. 26, 1890. F. A. Woodard, Esq., Ch. Dem.l Co. Ex. Com. I Dear Sib :I see from the papers of last week j that my position as to the return of Senator Vance to the U. S. Senate, is not , understood by my friends in Nash, and Frank lin counties. I thought my position was plainly stated in the Wilson Democratic Con vention. I now reiterate its substance to you, to be used as you deem best, that . I shall, if elected to the Senate, take Dleasure in voting for Senator Vance as long as his I name is before the Democratic caucus. This I believe to be the ex-, pressed wish of the people of this district and I shall take great pleasure in carrying out the will of the peole. Senator Vance has always been the true and tried friend of the farmers and I believe the time has come now when he can and will help them. If any man can do anything tor them he can Very resdectf nlly yours, H. F. Freeman. W e desire here and now to the he commend Dr. Freeman for unequivocal way in which thus pledges himself to whatever lies in his ! power do to secure the re-election of Senator Vance. The Advance "proposes to do whatever lies in its pow-1 er to secure the nomination and election of Dr. Freeman and we call on all good Democrats to do likewise. He shall have our hearty and cordial support, at&ndincr as he does upon a Vance Democratic patform ana we predict that he will he tri umphantly elected by a big majority. ' THE SECOND DISTEIOT- The Democrats of this district meet at Kinston next Wednes day for the purpose of nominaU init a candidate for Congress. The Advance believes that this I district can be redeemed from Republican rule this year if right man is nominated. We believe if Hon F. M. Simmons ii nominated, with practical unanmity, that he we will ac cept the nomination ! and that he will be elected. In the first place, he knows the district as does no other man, and in the second place, the people gener ally beueve he can and will be elected and they would there- fore work the more I earnestly and untiringly to secure his lection, than they would for a man of whose election they had no hope. We r sincerely hope all prejudice and differ ences win De tnrown to tne winds and that tho Democrat." oi the district will act wisely and tender him the nomination. THE CONVENTION. It was the privilege of- the editor of the Advance to at tend the meeting of the Demo cratic State Convention which met at Raleigh last week. An account of the Convention ap pears on the first page of this week's issue. The convention was the smallest and most harmonious weaver attended. A ticket was nominated' for th various Judgeships that hud already been practically named by the people. A platform was laid down that is broad and strong enough to hold every man: who has the good of the people at heart. There was no friction between the different classes there represented. The work of the Convention augers well m t t - ior democratic success and we believe the Farmers' Alliance will be a tower of strength in Whis campaign. The Demo cratic party is now a united, harmonious whole,! however much fear has been ! entertain ed and bitterness engendered in tne contest for nominations in the various counties of the btate. Let us one and all off with our coats and I work i to gether for the success of the Democratic party. 1 he Advance was the first newspaper in the State to vig- : 1 a -m . orousiy ana systematically as- ou tho Homestead law and its legitimate offspring, the crop lien law, and we feel no little gratification that the Alliance shonld be with us on this im portant subject. . j The Republicans Ninth District have nated Ewart. We do of the reno ini tio t be Heve that the Democrats of the West will ever again sub- knit to being misrepresented by such a demagogue for that his speech on the force bill and the electioneering use he is now making of it, proves him to be. We believe Ewart will be de feated by such a majority as will completely disorganize the Republicans of that section for all time to come.
