G, Raper. ii For Solicitor 3rd Judicial District Larry 1 Moore, of Pitt. : Jim Young evidently over looked the Wilson county Re publican convention in his recent ilying trip to the State. The Colonel kept the negro off the Wake Republican tick et, -but he could not crown sDr. Williams. It is to., be hoped that Col. James Young of the United States army has returned ""to. his post at duty ; but poor TennesseCj you have our sym pathy, when this gentleman is within vour borders. i - In The News 61 Sepd 29th, we published a copy of the nreliminarv examination of Mr. Geo. M. .Griffin, Register of Deeds of Wilson county, who is one of the defendants in the suit. of Crowell vs. Geo. I I. Griffin, et als. As will be seen bv an exam inatipn of the testimony, Mr, Griffin repudiated any and all charges which tend to hold ex Sheriff Crowell in the light of a defaulter of the. public funds of this county. Without going into the merits of the case at all, we wish simply to remark that upon the sworn statement of Mr, priffin published in a recent-issue of the Caucasian and the purported sworn state ment irculated through this county there is a marked and material variance, namely: the use' of the words "and paid'-' in the latter after statin jr. the amount sworn to be due the present esteemed Board of County Commissioners. We do not ;. question Mr. Griffin's veracity as to what his inten tions were, but any man who has regard for the promulga- tiqn of the exact truth, in so delicate and important a 'mat as this, would have corrected even a seemingcharge, and as - such ; the original statement without the . addition of the words "and paid" appears at first glance to be. The matter brings to light one important fact, that whatever may be the " wishes of the political enemies of that most excellent centle man and sheriff Mr.. J. W. Crowell, yet so unimpeachable is his character as'a ofentle man and his. record as an of "ficer in this county, they dare not openly aver that there is any charge to be jaicl at his feet. V(i only wish that we could be assured that we will continue to have such men in 'charge of public affairs as Mr. Crowell. . May .the day soon come when the regime of ' his : like shall' once niore be the or der of the day.' ' - . ."There is a retribution in politics." These were the opening words of Governor Russell's inaugural address. Perhaps there is no man in the State to whom these words are so forcibly impressed upon his mind than Governor Rus sell. No doubt it did seem to him that there was a retribu tion in politics, when, after a quarter of a century of retire- ment- his. party; headed by hii self, was again placed in per in - pow er in this State Perhaps more forcibly than before," will these words come to his mind, when after a cer-. tain day in November he will be taught that the people of this State also believe in a ret-, ribution. ", No man has had a better opportunity to place his party in a strong position in the es teem of-the voters of this State than the Governor, and no man has so ignominously failed. The reason of this failure is no for to seek. It is a moral impossibility for the republi can party to decently carry on the public affairs of this State, so long as it is composed of its present constituents. What has been said of the Governor applies to not only himself and his party j but also that other party which today has a gol den opportunity to show its patriotism, to show whether or not it is in favor of true re form. v Gentlemen of the Populist .party, in Wilson county par ticularly, what are you going to do ? On which side do you propose to be arrayed? Now is your opportunity. Perhaps you will never have such an opportunity agam. .p" The road is open" and it is for you, and you alone, to de cide, this question. It is one which, deserves your considera tion. It is one which your leaders can't answer for you. It appeals to you as indivduals and not as a member of rarty- . . ' .. a For Infants and Children. The Kind You Have Always Bought Bears the Signature of Mr. Bayard is dead.- The great Secretary of Stale under 'Mr. Cleveland, . and again the great . Ambassador under the same President, has joined the fathers of his country in the land of eternity. .It matters not that he may have differed from us in some of his views in regard to the policy of this government, we pan vet recognize him as a strong man, a great man, al though we. take him onlyas a representative- of one class of citizens of this country. As a Senator, as a Diplomacist, he made his name great in two great countries. In . England he will probably be rajiked as as one of our ereatest Ambas- sadors to tliat-tountrv T 1 It was "fortutiate for us that at that time hq should have represented us in that Court, since he did much to bind us to that country, which alone of the great powers of Europe, not only sympathized with us in our recent struggle with Spain, but also gave us aid in a way which , we can never fully understand.
