THE ROANOKE NEWS. THURSDAY, : : : OCTOBER 5, 18S2. NOTES HEREAND THERE The spproachlnir marriage of Senator David Dsvls, of Illinois, to ons of North Carolina charming daughter, is now occupying the at tention of most of the .Northern pipers. fhey uniformly disagree, however, as to the nam ( the distinguished statcsman'a future brl.le, which I Misa Addie K. Burr. Miss Burr Is a luce of Mrs. Wharton J. Green, with whom the makes her home. A Morcliend J ty correspondent writes that It is the only Tillage In the world without curl wheel In It. I do not think there is a wag in or a buggy horse in town snd rery few la ihe county. Everything is done in boats. There Is not a house In the comity that a boat ainuol get within a mile of. Not a doctor or lawyer In the connty his a horse thry prae l:e iu boats. The people ge to funerals In boats, and when they arrest a man they carry him to Jill in a boat. Reports from the principal tobacco growing lections of the State are to the effect Ibat the crop Is Tery good. There Is a large In crease of acreage in the Piedmont and western section. The quality of the leuf Is high, par ticularly of the North Carolina bright. The yield promises to he exceptional, and the crop Is beliiR rapidly garnered and cured. Improved methods of curing hae proven of creut value Iu increasing the quality of the crop. Much damage was done by rain. A political meeting held at Lancaster 8. 0. outbeU7th ult., was addressed by Col. Cash. About the close tf the meeting a difficulty arose at the stand between a white Democrat and a colored man, which resulted in the former being wounded in the head by a blow with a slick or atone. At this time two or three pistols shots were tired near tlie stand, but uo mo was hurt. Soon after this a large procession of colored men on horseback camo upon the streets, one of the number having a large pistol buckled around his body. The negro poluted the pistol at a white man, and said, "There's the dimmed rascal who did the shooting." y lie while man gave him the lie and the colored fired. Immediately several shots were tired by while men and the colored man fell dead. A number of shots were then flred by the white and colored men, and three other colored men were killed and many wounded. T ho authorities soon succeeded in restoring quiet, which now prevails. It Is be lieved that the trouble is over, XTK A HII OHMK.VIN l AI A KOI) K D l-.KIKI.I. Editors News: Dr. Tanner Illustrates that a man could live 40 days without eating and built for himself quite a reputation. Emulous of an equal notoriety I am living without tltep only and atepliug lie hours in the twenty four, and to while away the time which drugs with leaden wings, drop you this letter. There bus been very much rain recently, with cool Digit's following, causlog the cotton, wh it lit tle there Is. to open very rapidly, and it Is being housed and marketed pretty freely and tin in' '0 and Dinah agilo handling moucy iu considerable amounts, which bring gladness an J.iy to the hearts of our merchants, who with loaded shelves are ready to supply all the nints of those who hare the article known as greenbacks -to a certain extent everyone of us belongs to the greenback party, and the proba bility is none of us will ever become cloyed with the ubore article. It Is hard to tell Just new which cauldron Is bull.ig most furiously the political or reli gions, among the eolre i falkt. Its nothing but politicks all day on the streets, and preaching all night. They ure very fun J of singiiu ttit reiist of hymns, "Gathering hoina" which being Interpreted by some unknown scamps, rosins nothing more or less, than gathering chickens from various "hen roosts" and pigs from styes. One party lost aiout thirty chickens iu one night Several others lesser number, aud set eral shoals have gone to spits which tlielr owners did not design them for : There is abundant "Music in the air," but net made by "ye hungry musquito" this tune but the clanking of church bells aud the crods of singers called together thereby. I reckon there la more cheap politics, com mou religion, and meau whiskey, dispensed In and around this town than any other you wot of. Until recently it has been heilthy, but as the fill presses on us our Drs. are becoming more busy. I hear of no deaths, but sevsral are very sick requiring rfojs medical atleutiou. The skating rink broke up this night, i do est know what our young folks will do now, for some where to walk aud court, uuless su other rink Is started. McKut: Information has been lodged with me (and there is uo doubt of its correct ness) that the phtsician imolovcd by the Com mlssieners to atteud the Poor ilouse makes It a point to visit that pluco every Sunday lor the purpose of keeping the Superintendent from attending the services of (lo t's saiieiiinv, ami he having been Instructed by the Commission. era to be on hand whenever 'the doctor kes a visit, has been compelled to abandon such ser vice, including t tie preaching of the word, the Sunday school and the class of wh ieh he is a leadrr. As far as my information extends, this is the irst instance in which a Grand Jury has ever undertaken" to dictate to a physician when and on what occasions he should visit his patleirs; aud it strikes me, (us no doubt it will all think ing people) that their Hum would have been better employed aud the Intero stsof I lie county better subserved, If they had lieu n attending to their legitimate duties, Instead of thus Inter meddling with matters Hint did not concern them, and with which they had nothing to do As to the charges made iu tins rare commu nication I simply state, that the Commission -era do not employ a phjsiclan to attend the Puor House ; that I hate neivi- ni ide it u point to visit that place on Sunday for the purpose of "keeping the Superintendent from attending the services of God's Sanctuary;" for I sin in dined to think that but few persons stand inure in need of that divine blessing than the present County official at thu l'or House and that the Commissioners have never instructed him to be preseut "wheuever the doctor makes u visit'1 aud he has beeu absent on Sunday whenever lie has seen lit.
