A Weekly Democratic journal devoted to the material, educational, political and agricultural interests of Halifax and sur rounding counties. jay-Advertising rates reasonable nnd furnished on application. THURSDAY MARCH 19, 1891. We are Marching along. The peach trees are in bloom. Easter bonnets ore blooming. Last Tuesday was St. Patrick's Day. Superior court adjourned last Friday. There ate promises of a great shad catcb. Efficient advertising will keep your clerks busy. It is said the Prince Albert frock coat is to return. Scientists say that the orange was originally a berry. Tue machinery is being rapidly put in position in the mills. Most women deplore the return of the long street skirts. The shiny sailor hat for females has bobbed into favor again. To BE or not to be is the question. But we are going to be. Masculine hair is to be cut short and have a part cut down the centre. There is no mushroom business about Weldon. Its advance is on a solid basis. The county ruads are said to be in a dreadful condition, and almost impassi ble. The dear girls now mark their hosiery by embroidering their favorite flower on the top. H Options on real estate are anxiously sought lor by syndicates with the cash to back them. In sixty days town lots and property neat town will be worth twice as much I as it is now. Two magnificent waterpowers are be ing developed here by capitalists of un limited means. We are coming, father Abraham, and ! no one should allow himself to he left by the procession. Town lots are selling like hot cukes Now is the time to buy fur investment or building purposes. Rev. P. H. Pur n em., of Winston, delivered two excellent sermons iu the Baptist church here. Twelve months from now the popu lation of Weldon will be 2,500, judging from present indications. Don't bo afraid to put your money in Weldon real estate. It will be sure to briug in handsome returns. Electric lights are assured as soon as the water roaches the wheel that will be in a month or six weeks. To stop hiccough, grasp the pulse of the left wrist with the right hand and press firmly for one minute.. Mrs. I. V. Stainback has purchased of Mr. G. P. Phillips a lot on Third street adjoining his new residence. Owing to recent continuous rains farm work is very much behind It is to bo hoped, however, that the weather is now settled, for a time at least. The newspapers of the country ato now hunting centenarians. Do uny of our readers know of one? If so please send us name and particulars. The weather prophets are all telling us just what everybody has a tight to expect: The spring will be spring like, tho summer warm, tho fall autumnal and the winter cold. Quite Sick. Mrs. S J. L'e,. moth er of our townsman, Mr. J. B Lee, and her sons J. R. and Charhss Lee are all critically ill in the same house. We sin cerely hope they will soon recover. Salvation Oil quickly finds its way to the seat of the disease, allays tho infl im nation, and. hv removing the cause, ef- lects a ncrivtunent mir Price only cents. i Mr. Ruskin thinks that th-re is n gr"at future for American rt but he hardly realizes the enormous demand over here for Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup.' Shakes of stock in the Littleton Fu- male College can be had at their par value, and they pay nix percent, interest. The monev is wanted , thoroughly cijuipt the college. Address Rev. J. M. Rhodes. Li.tlctou. Cooper's Ware House at Henderson, N. C, sells all grades of tobacco for the highest possible prices and makes quick returns in either currency or checks as the shipper may desire. You can't do better than ship to Coopers. They are Coming. We learn that several families will move here to live in a few weeks. We welcome them all in advance. We know of no place more desirable to live than Weldon. We have churches, schools, good society and fine business opportunities. Tobacco Plants Injured. We hear that owing to the continued rains the tobacco plant beds in this section are very much injured. The plants are very small and it is feared that they will not grow large enough to plant before the season is too far advanced for them to mature. Stoke Burned. The store of Wilev Baker, in Northampton county, was des- troyed by fire on Sunday night. The loss was about a thousand dollars worth of goods and fifty barrels of corn. We did not learn if the proDertv was insured or whether the fire was accidental or of 1 , . Mr. F. Froelicii tor some time past the leading merchant of Halifax, has rented Mr. J. T. Gooch's brickstore in this place and will in a short while put in a stock of goods. Mr. Froelich is a business man of the first order and is an excellent judge of goods. We are glad to have Mr. Froelich with us. We wel- come him and his estimable lady. The Freshet. The rise in the river last week was the highest we have had this season. It is receding now and there is no further danger. Major Emry had a quantity of cattle on an island near town and could not get them off. So he built a scaffold of lumber which was for- tunately at hand and put the cattle on it. The water was four feet deep on the is- land but none of his cattle was lost. v.uaMKMAUuN.-ine iu. nev. i. n mi 1 1 . t m B.
