The Board of Education held iti regular quarterly session at Halifax Monday. All the members, being in attendance. Superiu tendcut of Public Instruction W. A Daniel could not be present ou account of illness, ihe Board received the deeds for the lands sold by virtue of a uiort gage made to it by 11. J. Mr. Gary's advertisement of these lands lor rent next year will be found in another column ot this paper. Died. We learn that Col. J. R Davis who some years ago was proprietor of the hotel in this place, died about a week ago in Cincinnati, Ohio. Before coming to this place he conducted the 1'urcell house at Wilmington and in Norfolk, iu both of which places he was well and favorably known. When the W. & W. Railroad Company purchased the hotel property here Col. Davis re moved to H estern North Carolina and subsequently to Chicago where he lived several years, from there he went to Cincinnati where he died at an advanced age. lie was well liked here and his old friends here will regret to hour of his death. Economical County Governm ent. The treasurer of Halifax couoty, Mr, W. l Parker, who by the way is an effi cient officer in evtry sense i,f the word, iu formed us Tuesday that lis books showed that I he current expenses of- the county for the past twelve mouths had been less than tiny had ever been sine he has been treasurer. This is the best blowing that could be made by the Board ol Com .lissioners, and one which wiil be highly appreciated by the taxpayers. This is a large county, there are many bridges in it, the public fence costs considerably and the incidental expenses are necessarily heavy. The public will be gratified to know that its officials are enrcful and pru dent men. Educational Mass Meeting. There will be an educational mast meet ing at Littleton on December lib', 27, and 23. The Rev. Dr Crowell, president of Trinity College, oue of the most disting uished educators in the State, will preach on duuday, the27ih, and deliver an ap propriate address on the 28th. Other distinguished ipeakers will also be pre sent, and the occasion will be one of rare and general interest to alt who attend. The meeting is a Ratifying evidence that our people are waking up to the import ance of education to the coming men and women in whose hands will rest the wel fare and prosperity of this country in yea's to come. The public generally is invited to attend. A Narrow Escapb Mr. It L. Boone, conductor of a uiateiiul train of the Seaboard and Roanoke railroad was very severely injured Tuesday afternoon as his traiu was leaving town. It was loaded with teWraph poles, and Captain Boone was standing on the engine looking back to see if all the cars were coupled. The train was moving rapidly and as the engine paised a water tank the back of his head was struck by a timber and he Was knocked senseless iuto the tender. He Was about to full from the tender on the track when the eninjnr caught him. He was taken to Cohen's drug store where he was attended by Dr. Green, who dressed his wounds. He was doing well as could be expected when we went to priss. "Who ,-aid Hood's Sarsaparilla?" Thousands of people, who know it to bo the best blood purifierind louie medicine. Tkacu Kits' I.NSTITUTK. Professor E A. Alderman reached Halifax Monday to open the Teachers Institute, hut on tie count ol tlie weather tncie were few in at endsncc that day and the session did n it bein until Tuesday, Judge I 'miel, Superintendent of Public Instruction was unable to be prcseut until Wednesday on account of severe cold, which confined hiui to his room. There was a goodly number of teachers in attendance yesterday and the number will be much larger to-day. Professor Alder man is a most pleasant speaker and his lectures have impressed all who have heard them not only with his thorough mastery of his subjects but with his earnestness in building up the profession and the education of the people. He has given much and valuable instruction to the teachers and we have no doubt his work will be of great benefit to the county. We hope his visit to Halifax will prove pleasant in every respect, because of his noble work and his own admirable . per sonal qualities. Ihe session tomorrow will be devoted to a lecture to the public generally upon the subject of educatioo, and every man, woman and child in the county who can spare the time should certainly hear it as it will be both entertaining and instructive. The public is cordially invited to attend and the Roanoke News hopes this invitation will be accepted by all who can p issibly do so. Every b dy doesorought to feel an active interest in education and the public schools and Professor Alder man can tell them all about both. An Important Railroad Suit. The question of the liability of the Wil mington and Wetdon Railroad Company to pay State and county taxes upon a part of its main line and its branches will soou be brought iuto the courts. It will be remembered that sometime in the summer the Railroad Commission ruled that the maiu line from Halifax to Wel d.n ami its brunch lines were liable for Stale mid county taxes and assessed theui for thai purpose, uot'fying thu County Couilliissinin rs in oldcl that taxes levi. d upon the road bed in ruch county miht e collected. The iifjupany lias begun suit against .sherif';,l.sbrook by issuing minions and will in a week or two aifi.lv to Judg) Bryan at New Bern for an iujuneiion restraining the sheriff from collecting the taxes, upon the ground that their charter exempts them fruiu any and all taxatiou. The case will be heard at chambers and will of course go up to the Supreme court on appeal. Probably only one suit will he brought as it would be useless expense to bring one in each county since the same question would be involved in each cae. The counsel for the road are Messrs. W. H. Day and T.N. Hill and probably others. Mr. W. E. Daniel is counsel f..r the county, but it is probable that the Attoruey General aud other counsel wiil also appear with him. J he question of the liability of this or poration has been listed before, being twice carried, we believe, to the Supreme court of the United States. In each instance the suits terminated in favor of the com pany. Ihe present suit involves a very impor tant question relative to the construction of the company's charter and probably l lie wider and deeper question of the riiiht of a State Legislature to forover grant away the taxiug power of the State. A decision in favor of the State would add greatly to the taxable rroperty and con sequently to the revenues, but in view of the previous decisions it is hardly proba ble that a decision unfavorable to the railroad cempany will be obtained.
