THE ROANOKE NEWS, THURSDAY, MAY 4, 1893 THE JHOOT DEMON. His Ways Were Mysterious and His Ravages Terrible. Gh astly White, Hairless and Stone Blind, But His Victories Wers Numerous Narative of. Adven tures in India. The great Jhoot Demon, de scribed by Colonel Bowlong in his narrative of adventures in India, was a tiger whose ways wero as mysterious as his ravages were terrible. He could never be bagged. Ho killed every slnkum, r.utivo or European who tried it. This truc ulent beast had never beon tcm, and us ho never mangled v. body, but only sucked tho blood through an orifice made over tho juKuiar vein, tho terror the great Jhoot Demon inspired is not surprising. Ho never forced a door, yet he got into house after house. Two nub .alterns went out for him and ;tlm next day were found dead like, all .the rest. One with his last strength had managed to scratch tho wards, Look out for a L ." But nw ac count of conjecture could solve the riddle of these words. A faniouu shot, who once for a wagor shot MM tigers in twelve months, met tk same fate. He, too, left a "cjieepv" and mysterious message tho letters "A. 31." Then the Colonel goes. Ho built himself an ambush and watched. . "Jmst us the full light of tho moon fell upon tho stream and illuminated the surroundings there was an almost inaudible rustlo of leaves eloso behind me, and turn on the instant, I saw a little gray brown paw very cautiously put ting aside the twigs of my shelier aud behind the paw I could dis cern two small green eyes atten tively regarding ine. " 'A lungoor,' I said to myself as it vanished from view, a mon key! That's what tho lads and Dick Culverton meant to tell us, and, by Goorgo! there's mischief here. Moved by a sudden inspira tion, for which I cannot to this day account, I hastened from tho shel ter and ascended the adjoining tree. I had scarcely time to seat myself comfortably upon one of the lower branches when I saw the lungoor returning, followed by the most repulsive looking monster my eyes have ever beheld. "You talk, Snapper, of your ti ger being mamry, this one was ab solutely naked, nudo as anut.bald as a bottle, not a hair anywhere a huge, ghastly, glabrous 111011 strocity a very Caliban of tigers, as big as a bison aud us long as a crocodile. "As tho ghastly creature crept after tho monkey lie followed tho slightest curvcand deviation of his guide with tho delicate alacrity of a needle under the influence of a magnet. The adroitness displayed by the tiger was suddenly con verted into a subject of horrified wonder, for as the brute approach ed the ambush lie turned his hid eous face up to the moon, and 1 could seo that his eyes were of t dull dead white without light, in telligence or movement. The crea ture was stone blind. For all thai he evidently knew, or thought he knew, what lay before him, for the saliva of anticipation was clinging to his withered jaws like a mass ot gleaming icycles. "The monkey, when it had come within jumping distance, giving a low signal cry, made one vigorous spring into my late shelter, alighted upon my camp stool and sprang out again on the other side. He was instantly followed by the tiger, who fell like an avalanche upon the stool, crushing it to match wood and at once began to feel about on all sides for his ex pected victim. "Now was mv chance; beneath me in the broacl light of the full moon lay tho Demon of the Jhoot. I aimed stoadily at a deep furrow between the huge shoulder blade and held my breath for the shot. At that moment the keen eyes of the monkey caught sight of me, end the little animal uttered u shrill note of warning; but it was too late, my finger was upon the trigger, and I tired both barrel in quick succession." A JOLLY COOD FfcLLOW. "For he was a Jolly Rood follow" Ann hh ni the iriijfKt onir When thorerlllii erow ' mellow And the vine Juice pawed Hlong, He'd star till the night u winging And uiher the morning In ' With the nofen of turbulent ringing And the clink of the cannikin. A French paper has publishod a roll of honor of dogs which have distinguished themselves in war. This is not inappropriate, consid ering that the dog has been pressed into military service. For instance, there was Bob, the mastiff of the Grenadier Guards, which mado tho Crimean campaign with that gallant corps; and also Whitepaw ("Patto Blanche"), a bravo French ally of Bob, that mado tho tuuna campaign with tho One Hundred and Sixteenth of tho lino and was wounded in defending the Hag. Another, 31oustuchc, was entered 011 tho strength of his regiment as entitled to a grenadier's rations. Tho barber of his company had orders to clip and comb him onco a week. This gallant animal received a bayonet thrust at at Marengo find recovered a Hag at Austcrlitz. Jlarshal Lannes had Moustache decorated with a medal attached to his neck by a red ribbon. Corps do Garde, a Norvel among dogs, followed a .soldier to Marengo, was wounded at Austerlitz and perished in tho retreat from Russia. Tho Sixth of the guard had a military mastiff named 3lisore, which wor1 tlir 'o white stripes sewn on his black hair. We have also to 11:11110 Pompon, of tho Forty-eighth Be douins, the best sentry of the bag gage train; Loutonate, a Crimean heroine; Mittralh, killed at Inker man by a shell: Mofiino, that saved his master in Russia, and was lost or lost himself, but found his way, going from Moscow to 3Iilan, his first dwelling place. Tho most remarkable, however, was the last, an English harrier named Mus tapha, which went into action with his tiiighsh comrades at Fontenoy, and, we are seriously told, "remained alone by a field pieco of the gunner, his master, clapped tho match to the touch hole of the cannon and thu3 killed seventy soldiers," and it is further added that Mustapha was pre sented to King George II. and was rewarded with a pension aliinentam. OUE BOTTLE JOHNSON'S Chili and FEVER Cures permanently OTTTT) case of Chill and l ever, liiliuus or Ty phoid Fever, Hemorrhagic or Swamp Fever, or money returned. Price 50e. Wonders of Animal Life. Tho complexity of animal struc ture is, marvellous. A caterpillar contains more than 2,000 muscles, In a human body are somo 2,000, 000 perspiration glands, communi cating with the service by ilucts, having a total lonstk of some ten miles; whilst that of arteries, veins and capillaries must be very great ; tho blood contains millions of mil lions of corpuscles, each a strue ture in itself; the rods in tho retina, which are supposed to be tho ulti mate recipient of light, are esti mated at 30,000,000, and 3Ieinert has calculated that tho grey matter of the brain is built of at least 000,- 000,000 cells. Fireside Sparks. A fancy drink has no necessary relation to a feast of the imagina tion. When a boy has a boil ho is in a nositiou to keep his family in hot water. You mav nocularlv tell a man he's a lyre, but it isn't wise to harp ou it much. . It is ouite possible for folks to shine intellectually without being hgkt-heaaed. There are some men to whom a loss of their reputation would mean mighty good luck. "All men aro born equal," but some of them uro promoted to the police force afterwards. What tho solar system needs now is a good stringent law for the punishment ot vagrancy. The shooting stars appear to have no aim, and no one under heaven knows what they are shoot ing for. When some people get on the roll of honor they think they must roll it up and take it off with them.
