THE ROANOKE NEWS THURSDAY, APRIL 13, 1899. PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY JOHN W. SLEI3S, Editor and Proprietor. D. E. STAINBACK, Associate Editor Entered at Fust Office at Wrlduii a Seamd- Claw Mutter. BATES OK SUBSCRIPTION IN ADVANCE. One Year (by Mail), Postage l'aid $1.50 Bii Months 75, A Weekly Democratic journal devoted to the material, educational, political and agricultural interests ot Haluaz and sur rounding counties. SKeVAdvertising rates reasonable aud furnished on application. The result of recent elections in the west is nut altogether favorable to the renominalion of Mr. Brjan. The fact that his home city went republican will be taken as an indication of wauitiir of his eause in Nebraska. According to the most favorable es timates for the next fiscal year the mili tary control of Porto Rieo, Cuba, and the Philippines will cost us 1(12,000,000 a month. What are wc to get in return for this large expenditure ? If a person cm take by reading about as dangerous a disease as cerebrospinal meningitis, popularly known as "spotted fever," as claimed by St. Louis physicians it would seem to be time to prohibit the publication of scare-head disease stories. Pkok. Small, of Chicago University has been telling the same sort of truths about trusts and other combinations of capital that caused another professor at that University, which was founded by John D. Rockefeller, to lose bis job. The New Orleans newspapers are ex cited over a report that an article which is being largely sold in Louisiana under the name of "boil pork," is really mule meat. New Orleans editors aro famous for being particular as to what they eat. A correspondent of the Charleston News and Courier says that there is a rumor afloat that the Seaboard Air Line extension may not go via Columbia, but that a change may be made via Sumter to connect at Dentnatk with a line owned by the system. If in less than one year 21 per cent, of our soldiers iu the Philippines are vic tims of a loathsome disease, as Senator Mason says he was informed in the Surgeon 'General's office, what per centage out of a permanent garrison can be ex pected to escape? It seems that Senator Culloin, the man who played his fancied resemblance to Liuoola as a reason why he should be nominated for president, is to have Gov. Tanner as an opponent, if the electiju ol a democratic legislature doesn't knock them both out and send a democrat to succeed Cullom. TlIE following unusual advertisement appears in a Lebanon, Pa., paper: "Pub lic Notice I hereby notify all saloon and hotel keepers, or any other person not to furnish liquor of aoy kind to me. as lam miking an effort to quit the drinking habit, and cannot do so as long as any one will give me liquor." There is a chance for somebody to mike $30,000 by proving property. It is lying in the State Treasury of Montana without a claimant Thj Stale lays no claim to it, our djes any one else. It was turned over t the investigating committee bv a Senator, who says it was given to him to vote for Senator-elect Clark, and Ciark says it isn't his mjney and he doesn't know anything about it. Now that the war with Spain is well over, the announcement is ma le that the Pension Bureau is busily engaged in re turning to the rolls the names uf pension ers who eulisted in that war. The army surgeons found these men sound enough for military service; the medical eiamin ing boards of the Pension Bureau fiud it an easy matter to restore them to the pen sion list as invalids. And there you are! ti( CI HE NO PAY. That is tho way all druggists sell GROVE'S TASTELESS I'll ILLTO.V- 10 for Chills and Malaria. It is simply Iron and Q liuino in a tasteless form. Children love it, Adulta prefer it to bitter, nauseating Tunica. Price 5Uc. For snlc by W. !. Cohen, Weldon, N. C. Two negroes were discussing the Bmillpoi situation in Catrollton. One aaid, "I hear they only have one case ol 'oelluloid,' and they've got him 'can teened.' We needn't be frightened now." But that is reported to hare been equaled by a girl in Maroelino, who said of one of the persons who was suspected to have been exposed, that be had been "com posed" to smallpox, hut he had been "assassinated" and wouldn't have to be "guaranteed." Maroeliue Mirror. Hucklen'i Arnica Halve. Cohen saw tin Ufutai "at a im aino tou Haw mn Boup The proposition of a private syndicate to build an underground railway for New York involves an estimated expenditure of two hundred million of dollars. The magnitude of the thing agaiti illustrates how plentiful is money in this country that its possessors should be driven to try to get interest from it by iuvestmmt un derground, as well as in the air, and all the way between. To put money into something or other that will pay is get ting to be a pretty desperate sort of a problem. The money set aside by the Fifty-fifth Congress to pay fur six new protected cruisers of 2,500 tons each will be suffi cient at current prices to meet the cost of an equal number of 3,000 ton vessels that is, instead of resembling the Marble head, thoy will be almost in the class of the Raleigh or the Cincinnati. War ships of the Raleigh type, although umnuored can seracely be too numer ous iu the new 1'eder.l navy, which must sustain for many years to come a prepou derant role in the gieat drama of interna tional affairs. liEI'tntTs to the Weather Bureau here, for the Weekly Crop Bulletin, show that great havoc was caused in the tiucking section of the State by the recent frosts and the snow storm. Much of th early produce was eutirely destroyed and all of it received a severe setback. Conser vative estimates place the damage to the strawberry crop alung the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad at twenty-five per cent of the whole crop. Although many farmers covered their crops and sustained partically no loss, others failed to cover and suffered heavily. The crop was look ing extra fine before the fieeZ'i. The girls of Newark High School have done a sensible thing, according to the New York Herald. They have decided to discard tight lacing and every thing else in the style of dressing that has a tendency to retard the most natural development of the body. This is a most sensible step on the part school girls, We heard one of much observation re marking sensibly but a day or two age on the follies that women practice in matters of lacing and dress. The school girl age is the time generally when the nun- sense begins, and hence the Newark girls have taken an exceedingly wise step. A church in New York is about to establish a store fur sale of dry goods on the itistalmant p'an, at prices, it is slated far below those asked in ordinary stores selling goods of similar description. The department stores might retaliate by furnishing free miuisters to preform marriage ceremonies or to officiate- on other oeca-ions. and erect small chapels for lace goods or dried beef department. W hen a church goes into the mercintile business it is no wonder that people be come skeptical about its brand of religion Not because there is anything dishooar- able in trade but because the church should render unto Caesar the thiugs that are Caesar's and unto God, God's. We are very glad that in the South we have few of the sensational faddists wlu dis grace religion in the North and bring Chiistiauhy into contempt. Charlotte News. Tils information comes Irom Wash ington that the I'. S. gunboat Wilming ton which is now cruising in Vemzuelan waters, is to be sent on ao exploring ex pedition as far up the Auiazm river as her draught of abjtit eight feet will allow her to go. The highest poiut yet reached on the river by an American vessel is Manaos, 850 miles from ihe ro.iuthi.il' the river, and beyond this point very little is known of a definite character about ihe great river, which is more than three thousand miles in length It is believed that the Wilmiugton will be able to cover at least two thomiod miles of the length of the Atniz m, an! doubtless she will be enable 1 to clear up much of the mystery that attach to the interior of Brazil. Wild stories of great mineral wealth; statues of g!d and tribes of Amazon warriors have clung to the region since the days of Pizirro and his follow ers in the sixteenth century, but it is doubtful if the explorations of the Wil mington will sustain any of the old tradi tions. MILLIONS GIVEN AWAY. It is certainly gratifying to the public to know of one concern in the land who are not afraid to be generous to the needy and suffering. The proprietors ot Dr. King's New Discovery lor Consumption, Coughs and Colds, have given away over ten million trial bottles of this great medicine; and have the satisfaction of knowing it has absolutely cured thou sands of hopeless cases. Asthma Bronchi tis, llursenessand all diseases of the Throat, Chest and Lungs ara surely cured by it. Call on W. M. Cohen DiugnU, and g.-t a trial Louie free. Regular size 50c. Every bottle guaran teed, or price refunded. "I love you well," is not enough To say, for love that's true Must promise to remain the same In health and sickness, too. A Hubstautial fact. W. R. Clark, Pickaway, Virginia, says: I havo for several years been using Ra mon's Pilla in my family with most satisfactory resulls, and dont hesitate to recommend them to my customers as superior to any of the kinds kept in stock. Not only are your pilla reliable but Ramon'a Relief and Nerve and Bone Oil are the most satisfactory remedies I ever handled, and if they were more generally used, they would often make the Doctors'a bill only 25o. instead of $2. These goods need no dustiog in my stock because they are constantly oomiog in and going out are Trade Winners and Trade Keepers." These qualities are not i the ry but a substan tial fact.
