THE OLD DAGUERREOTYPES. BY JOE LINCOLN. Up in the attic I (bond them, locked in the cedar chest, Where the flowered giwns lie folded, which once were bruve as the heat ; And, like the queer old jackets and the waistaiats g ly with stripes, They tell of a worn out fashion these old daguurrotypes. Quaint little folding fuses fastened with tiny hook, Seemingly made to tempt one to lift up the latch and look, Linings of purple velvet, odd little frames of gold, Circling the faded faces bruiight from the days of old. Grandpa and grandma, taken ever so long ago, Orandma'i bonnet a marvel, grandpa's collar a show; Mother, a tiny toddler, with rings on her baby hands Tainted lest none should notice in glittering, gilded bands, Aunts and uncles and cousins, a starchy and stiff array, Lovers and brides, then blooming, but now so wrinkled and gray Out through the misty glasses they gaze at me, sitting here Opening the quaint old caves with a smile that ' half a tear. I will smile no more, little pictures, for heartless it was, in tiuth, To drag to the cruel daylight these ghosts of a vanished youth. Go hack to your cedar chamber, your gowns and your lavender And dream, 'mid their bygone graces, of the wonderful days that were. TWO POEMS BY THE I'UESENT JOY. I ain't a-lmigiu' fer the joys the joys that orter be A flower in any meadow is sweet enough fer me! I ain't a-lookin' fer the light iu skies so faraway ; To me the very brightest light is that which shiues today! I aiu't a worry iu' the woil' 'bout human rights an' wrongs; I hear the sweet birds singin,' an' thank God fer their songs. I know the oF worl'a rollin' the bright, accepted way, An' I'm thankful that I'm livin' on the green of it today ! Life's jeet too short fer sighin'; the song still beats the sigh ; The rainbow's runnin' rosy rouu' the storm that's in the sky; An' all the wort' is loveliness, an all the worl' is light; Then say to Joy, "Goodmoruing," an' siy to grief, "Goodnight !" t? w qv uinunci -y. m o-U I miunnLL m "Mr. Cbarless," she said, changiog sud denly her lively expression for one that was serious, but kind, ''I'm sorry, very soiry for you but I cannot marry you." He waited within. He felt his very existence crumbling away, but the only visible symptom of the ineffable pain be was suffering was tbe distrait look upon hia face and in bis eyes. He was silent for a space- Then he said : "Why?" "Well, to tell yon the truth, I do Dot love you, aod surely you would not want to marry a woman who did not love you? Come, dow, would you ? A loveless mar riage I" He took heart. "But this would not be loveless. By no means. Yuu know I love you. I have told you so a thousaud limes, bave attested it with tears and I im not iven to weeping bave proved it to you by every word and look and act. Oh, dear, dear Katherine, I would die for you, I would lie dowo and let you walk upon me, I would tear out oiy very heart and give it to you " "Oh, please do not say things like these," she softly interrupted. "They only pain rue. I know you live me, but I do not love you. If I did " And she sighed. "But you eould learn, you know. You might in time." "No," she answered, languidly, "it is useless." Then, brightening, "You will recover' from this. It's hard, I koow, but you'll recover. You'll live to laugh at it. Cheer up 1 'Cheer up, my merry men, nor fear for wind nor wave,' as Columbus said to his mariners." She beamed on him, radiant like an an gel. He eould not resist her, and be, too, smiled in turn. "There !" she exulted, "you are better already. Didn't I tell you ? And then, you know, this is ODly your first expe rience. You've never loved anybody but me, have you?" The question bit him hard, aod he changed instantly. He 'uroeJ his face way from her and bent his glance up ward, as if he weie looking at some far away object looking through the furni ture, through the pictures on the wall, through the wall itself, and out imo un Uiterab'e rpaee. ' V"," he iiid, as if p?akin.! to him elf. My lady gave a vuible start, colored, prew a liule onufuM-d, and regarded him wiih a curiously iuient look. His eyes were Mill tied on spare. He had Dot een her eotifusioD and she was sale. "Oh," she said, in the m t tinmn eerord of ways, 'yuu nsvrr told me that befits. Tell me ail about it now." "(t was in Baton E 'Ue," be be ftan, aod bis eyes themselves seemed to be in Baton Rouge as bespoke. "I was only twenty. She was eighteen. Yes, I ioved her. I did, indeed " "Was she dark or light?" (Katherine herself was light.) Me iuhilid i deep krealh. "Dark," he answered, "her hair waa rich ehestnut, and her eyes big and brown, like the eyes of Homer's ox." Here be paused aod gaud fundly Baton, Kougeward. Then be went on: "Her faee Was like a clingstone peach, white and red, and her voioe was music She was Creole, you know, aod full of the South." Katherine (who waa herself Northern) moved uneasily aod devoured tbe face of her lover with eyes el strange interest. She might have baei io Siberia for all the effVot it bad oo bim. ' Go on I" she urged "Why didn't yon marry her? Did she love you t" Chariest oame back from Baton Rouge quick as the snap of a pocketkoife. ''That she did," be exclaimed with aoi-I FRANK L. STANTON. A VOICE FROM THE FIE' DS I never Itiiiu' go music in the ripple of the wheat; To me all Ileitis in .uumnertime air bliiin' with the heat! And I never want no knowledge of that later golden inle Which teaches folks compassion on the stubborn Georgy mule ! When it comes to pulliu' fodder, shuckiu' corn, or likes o' that. You don't find me boorayin', or n-tu'ow- in' up my hat! No politics in pickin' peas no matter what they say, An' you don't shout halle'uia when you're stackin' up the hay! But wheu it conies to fishin' well, it's then I'm right in town. When I hear the water swishin' see the cork a goin' down! An' best of all, good people, when I'm cuddled in a heap On the green banks of a river that's a singin' me to sleep ! iiiir.cin I amp niiuuku lhiili- w- mation, looking Kuiliei iue full in the face. "Oh, yes. But he was Catholic and there never had beeo a free thinker in the family. Her father and her in ither aod herself all agreed that I should bave to j iin the church. I beg ged her upon my knees to forego that condition. 'Our lives would be ruined,' was all she said 'It would be better fur us us both to die.' " It was Katherine who was thiokiDf now. "How did you part ?" she ai-ked. "Io tears. You see, I was a boy and intellectually proud, and I could not break my manhood by pretending to believe io a religion my intellect rejected. I could not believe in any religion whatever, and I conceived it degrading to pretend to do so." "Did you meet her again?'' "Once. It was at a ball when she came out. She was the most beautiful debutante io the South." Here Cbarless resumed bis vacant gze in the mental direction of Baton Rouge. Katherine was silent fur a long lime and was manifestly perturbed within. When next she spoke ber effurt to con ceal her agitation was vain, but Charleys was blind. 'What was her name?'' (This in a weak, hesitating voice.) "Nana," and his lips caressed tbe sound. Another long pause. "I suppose she was married very soon after ahe came out, wasn't .-be?" "Oh, no," said Charless, untraneing himself. "No. She isn't married yet. She's down there." Katherine was pile. "Would you join a womao's religion now if you loved her?" "Why, of course," replied Charless carelessly. "I am not a boy now. What difference would it make?" He arose aod walked toward the win dow. "Mr. Charless," exclaimed Katherine, faintly, "why don't you go down there and marry her ? ' He turned. She, too, had ri'en, and was now near. He looked at her fundly. "You niioht to know why," he re turned. "Would you advi-e me to do it? Do you think the old love would come back? I ih I knew for certain myself." She was very near him by this lime. Her eyes were cast down and her furm was shrinking. He drew close to her and touched her shoulder. Io a moment her anus weie around his ni ck aod her hsd n'M in j'iiih right spot, Then something hupp oed that has happened myriads of'iiues before, and her head aud (ace nestled again. When she looked up tbe second time her face was crimson sod her eyes buy, "Do you love me, Kitty?" he said. "No, I don't love you at all," and ber head nestled and ber arms pressed closer. A long spsce of silence. Then she whis pered, "Sweetheart ?" "What is it, love?" ' Do yuu love me more than you loved the girl io Baton Ruuge?" What answer he made I will not dis close; but I will ssy this, that Baton Rouge was never so far away as it waa at that very moment, Io almost every neighborhood there Is tome one whose life bat beeo saved by Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diar rhoea Remedy, or who hat beeo cured of chrooie diarrhoea by toe use of that med icine.
