Dunn k Co., report the business fail ures for January as 1,2 12 in number and (11,220,812 in amount. The Illinois Railroad Company pays to the State of Mississippi S.50,000 back taxes nnder a recent decision. With the rival baseball leagues black listing eaeb other's players and members of the New York 400 snubbing one an other, conditions in high life are distinct ly chaotic. FoRTT sailors from the United States cruiser Albany, oonvicted of mutiny, while the warship was in dock at Hong Kong, have been sentenced to various terms of imprisonment at Cavite. It is said that the new King of Eng land will ask for an allowance of $2,500, 000 a year His mother cot along with $1,925,000. In addition to this they will have to foot the (10,000,000 debu which he owes. Tbe fates fix things right sometimes. A fellow in Pennsylvania, who last week sold his wife for filly cents, was caught shortly afterwards stealing iron, jumped into a river to escipe and was drowned before he had swum fifty yards. When we get a little sniff of cold weather down this way, and the mercury drops to within 23 or so degrees of zero, we think it is cool, but the fellows up in the Klondike where it stood from 68 to 78 below, last week, would think ours Summer weather. It is said that the flow of oil from the well near Beaumont, Texas, has been so immense that in going to it one has to travel through oil a foot deep over the county roads for miles. It poured tut so fast that the earth reservoirs hastily dug could not hold it. The Wilmington Messenger suggest that a monument be erected in Raleigh to the memory of General Robert E Lee. We are heartily in accord with our esteemed co-temporary in a move so patriotic, and one which appeals to all true and loyal citizens of North Caroli na. Your farm is your bank. The pro per way to increase your capital is to add to the fertility of your soil so as to in crease its productive powers. The bet ter the soil the greater interest it will pay. And don't expect to keep check ing oat without making equivalent, or greater deposits or Nature will protest. The proposition that marriage and divorce should be made uniform in the several States by Federal statute is being widely discussed in the press and finds many advocates. The ease with which divorces are obtained in some of the Stttes and the alarming increase in the ratio of divoroes to marriages, are pointed out for reasons for uniform and stricter laws governiog divorce. Indeed so fre quent have divorces become, that they constitute a serious problem and al most a national disgrace. A few years ago divorces were few and far between in North Carolina. Now the frequency of them grows alarming and it is certainly high time some kind of a oheck was put upon them. The whipping post seems to be grow ing on the other side of the line. An Indiana solon proposes offering a bill which provides the lash as a punishment for numerous offences, ai.d now a Con necticut soion wants to see tbe w. p in troduced in his State. Some years ago they thought the whipping post in the South awful. W seethe necessity for it in North Carolina at every term of Halifax Crimi nal court. The oounty is put to an enor mous expense to try the many petty Iiroeny cases and a few months in jail is the only punishment allowed under the statute. Tbe whipping post would have t n times tbe eft ct od be much more economical. HAD TO CONQUER OR DIE. "I was just about gone," writes Mrs Rosa Richardson, of Laurel Springs, N. U., "I bad Consumption so bad that the beat doctors said I could not live more than a month, but I began to use Dr. King's New Discovery and was wholly cured by seven bottles and am Dow stout and well." "A very important movement is going on all over China, and more particularly along the vantage bai-in, in response to special orders Irutu the viceroys and governors. Bodies of 'volunteeis' aie being actively enrolled and drilled in the use of firearms, nomin ally for their owu protection, but in reali ty they form a large and formidable re serve force. Every guild and trade, io addition to all well to do gentry, have these 'volunteer' bodies, who are paid and armed by the government. They are not a public institution like regular troops, but are dispersed in towns and villages without any distinguishing fea ture, and in tbe event of further hostili ties will sprit g up from all quarters." Impeachment proceedings have beeu instituted atiainst Chief Justice D. E. Furehes and Judge R M. Douglas ol the Supreme Court of North Carolina. In the House of Representatives a resolution was introduced by Representa tive Locke (Viig, of Buncombe, lookiug to the impeachment of the Chief Justice and an associate member of the highest court io the Statu. The charges on which the impeach ment proceedings are based are that bath judges violated the Constitution in issu ing the mandamus upon the Treasurer to pay the claim for back salary of The ophilua White, Shellfish Commissi mer, when the Legislature, by expressed act forbid such payment. The resolution created a sensation when introduced in (he House Thurs day. While sucb action has been talked of, no one was expecting the matter at this time. The fact that the resolution was introduced by one of the leaders on the fljor of the House makes the impeach ment proceedings all the more serious As soon as the resolution was introduced it was referred to the Judiciary Commit tee at the rtquest of the author. The hill was later referred to a sub committee of five, of which ei Judge W R. Allen, of Wayne, is chairman This subcommittee, which consists of Mr. Allen, of Wayue, Mr. Craig, of Bun combe, Mr. Graham, of Granville, Mr Conner, of Wilson, and Mr. Spainhour, of Burke, is to consider the bill and make an early report. WARNS HIS RACE. REV. 8. P. W. DREW, COLORED, or NEW YORK, DEL1VEKH AN ADDHESg IN WILMINUTON A.NI1 GIVES HIS RACE SOME EXCELLENT ADVICE. Rev. Simon P. W. Drew, D. D , col ored, of Brooklyn, N Y , president of the Lincoln National Employment Burca addressed a large meeting in Wil mington last week, and explained that his object in coming to North Carolina wjs to discuss the wholesale exodus of negroes from Wilmington and other points in the South to New York aud other northern cities with the expectation of getting lucrative employment. He told bis colored hearers that New York was a mighty poor place for negroes, and tSat there was very little work there siiled for tbem. They might think they would find everything favorable but they would not. Negro girls, he said, were not wanted as servants, as there was plenty of white foreign help, which New York fami'ies prefer, as a rule. As for the males, there was no room for them as laborers, as experienced white labor was there in abundance, to be given the preference and crowd negroes out. There was no room for them as barbers, no rucm for them as blacksmiths, and in fact few openings for the negro, as experienced whites were there to out compete them io nearly every line of labor. There was no chance for them in politics, as negroes cannot hold office in New Yort. He said he learned that some negroes had left Wilmington on account of a riot, which probably some of them were re sponsible for bringing on hut he would like to say that the Wilmington difficul ty did not compare with the anti-nepro riot last fall in New Y'ork. He also pointed to the recent burning ef a negro in Kansas to show (hit the negro stands no more showing from violence in the north than he does in the south, when ho commits crimes 'hat call for the ven geance of the whites. He related bis pcrsooal observations of the crowding of negroes to New York. They can't get employment and they become chargis oo the public, take to stealing and get imo the penitentiary and the women in many instances find their way to the slums. He assured bis hearers that there were now negroes in New Y'ork aho had just such experiences. He advised every negro, unless he has means to sustain himself not to think of going to northern cities. A FIREMAN'S CLOSE CALL. "I stuck to my eugine, although every joint ached and every nerve was racked with pain," writes C. W. Bellamy, a lo comotive fireman, of Burlington, Iowa "I was weak and pale, wi. bout any ap petite and all lun down As I was about to give up, I got a bottle of Electric Bitters and, alter taking it.
