Th II last issue of the Henderson Gold Iicaf contained copious eitraeis from a paper read before Henderson' $fi, No. -29, accepted Masons, by R. S. MeCsin, Esq , secretary of the liOilp'. He hating been invited to deliver so address on some plan of masonry. The paper was turned over to a committee with the request that the whole or a part be published. Wc give the follow ing extracts as pertaining to Halifax county history which will, no doubt) prove interesting to our readers. "St. John's Lodse, Wilmington, N. C, was the first Lodge in the State, as the Grand Lodge in 1791, after a full inves tigation of the claims of all Lodges to priority St. John's Lodge at WiluiiDgton was awarded No. 1. While I know of no earlier record than this still Macoory undoubtedly existed in the Carolinas prior to this time because Gov. Royal White Hart Lodge at Halifax derived its authority from this source. Thus we see in Janu ary 1771, North Carolina, had the proud distinction of having the Frovincial Grand Master of America, there can be no doubt but this was great incentive to Masonry in this province and Joseph Monfort by bis earnest and loug and tireless efforts succeeded in awaking quite a number of the then sleeping masons ana created a new interest in the noble work.
