It will come upon the American people as a shock, for but yesterday io the full vigor of health he was visiting Northern States and enlising their co-operation in the coming Jamestown Exposition. Only a few weeks ago he was an honored visitor to Raleigh. General Lee was a Confederate soldier who woo distinction by his personal courage. As Governor of Virginia he demotstrated ability as ao xecutive As Consul General to Havana in a criti cal period he made world-wide reputa tion and was honored in every portion of the Republic Asa soldier in the Spanish-American War he added to bis reputation. Ho was chased but escaped, as usual. Tbe North Carolioa Baptist says that as the result of the revival in Wales a lawyer gave up bis position as attorney for brewers, which paid him 810,000 a year. This moves the Bap iit to say that this lawyor had "the right kind of religion." Thereupon the Biblical Re corder snys it can name two lawyers who recently declined fees from the liquor men one declining a fee of 810,000, the other 85,000 each in North Car olina.
