W'E feel satisried that the action of the tow l board of commission ers in votii'g $1,000 to the capital stock of the Halifax and Northamp ton Bridge Company will be ap proved by every citizen of Weldon. .It was a wise and proper step, and the people of Weldon are to be congratulated on their good fortune in having men at tne head of the town govern nent who by cc.serv ative and excellent management of the finances of the town, have made it possille to take stock in this great entt "prise, in which ev ary tax payer in Weldon is vitally interested. T te building of the bridge means ihe building of new manufacturing enterprises here, increased popu:ation of the town and the erection of the bridge means a return of this $1,000 invested an hundred fold. Died at the Methodist Orphan age, near Raieigh, Wednesday morning of 1st week, at six o'clock, Rev. , ohn Wesley Jen kins, its supe intendent since it opened its doo: s and the practical founder of the charity. On Monday norning, the 2nd, Rev. Dr. Jen'ins was stricken with paralysis t.nd soon afterwards suffered a stcond stroke. His death vas alnnst hourly expected from the first. He was in tl.e seventy-six year t!le village of Dentoon. 20 miles of his age, ha ing been born at the 0f Thomasville, which is the most old Jenkins h)me place in Gran- remarkable achievements in the ville county, May 4th, 1 832. , annas 0f ,le North Carolina rail It was as superintendent of the mads. The whole thin? was built Methodist Orphanage, however, that Dr. Jenkins was best known. In that capacity he had come to be loved and honored by the whole Stale, irrespective of denomi nation, as of the prophetic builders who turn ideals into masonry. The siory of the Methodist Or phanage is an inspirine one. It is dramatic and touched with the pathos of a beautiful achievement. That the Orphanage exists w ith its ninety-five children, well-housed well clothed, and well cared for, is due primarily and practically to his zeal, bravery and devotion. He was four times married.
