The sands in the hour glass of 1909 having run through we en ter upon 1910 with a determina tion to make it the best year in the history of Weldon. Will every one give us a helping hand? It is well for us to look back and see just what the past year has been, and cast about in order to see how we can improve our op portunities and advantages. We make no rash promises for the New Year nor do we frame a set of resolutions, to be broken time and again before the year turns its first calendar leaf to the wall, but we begin the New Year with faith in our town and in our people, trusting that all may pull together for a greater Weldon and that dur ing the year the town may have a minimum of sickness and death and a large measure of health and happiness, heaped up, shaken down and running over. The Baltimore Sun gives the following description of Dixie, that stirring melody, which never fails to call forth an enthusiastic out burst of applause. "Songs may come and songs may go, but "Dixie" goes on for ever. It runs away with 'Yankee Doodle,' drives'Marching Through Georgia' back to the woods, gives My Country, 'TisofThee,' 'Hail Columbia' and certainly has 'The Star-Spangled Banner' lashed to the mast. It is the liveliest survi val of the Confederacy and cannot be ignored or suppressed. Gath ering together its forces in the South, it has invaded the North, overrun the Union, captured the Continent and made all the world sit up and listen. "'Dixie' has in it the tinkle of the banjo, the strains of the violin, the bow, the strum of the piano, the blow of the bugle, the beat of the drum, the whistle of the fife and the swing and splendor of the full brass brand. When he hears it the old veteran sees the lines in gray still filing by, and the old Confederate exclaims, 'And we go marching on.' For Dixie' is the song of the soldier, the song of the dauntless heart, the song of the South unconquered. Don't be angry if a stranger calls at your home and asks if you love your wife. He's only the census man. About 65,000 oi them will be out on the job before long. The collecting of informa tion about the private affairs of people who don't want to talk is just a part of their duties. To make good they must be a cross between a newspaper reporter and a book agent. Governor Kitchin took a tumble down the steps of the Ex ecutive Mansion the other day and the Wilmington Siar finds consola tion for him in the reflection that if Governor Kitchin had to have trouble with the mansion steps, it was belter for him to fall down them going out than to fall up them coming in. New York owes a light bill of $1 1,000,000 to the gas company, but as the latter owes back fran chise taxes of $10,000,000 neith er side seems to be worrying very much. The Pullman company threatens to revive its old rule prohibiting porters from carrying the hand luggage of patrons to the car plat Form. An Ohio minister is asking a di vorce from his wife because she said his sermons were stupid. It is a great preacher whose sermons are brilliant to his wife. Making- Life Safer. Everywhere life ia being made more aafe through the work of Dr. King's New Life Pills in Constipation, Bilious neaa, Dyspepsia, Indigestion, Liver troubles, Kidney Diseases and Bowel Disorders. They're easy, but sura, and perfectly build up the health, 35e, at alldrnffiett. U BETTERMENT COLUMN. Conducted by Mrs. I. T. Wllklns, Assisted by Superintendent R. H. Latham. Through the kindness of the ed itor ol the Roanoke Nuws this column has been set apart for the Betterment Association ol the county, of which Mrs. Ida Wilkins is the Vice-President for Weldon Township. While the work is in charge of Mrs. Wilkins, assisied by Supt. Latham, of the Weldon Public Schools, sugKeaticis and contributed articles will be gladly received. All who are interested in ihe belterment of our town and county, especially from moral, so cial, intellectual, and hygienic standpoints, are invited to help make this column in Tun News one of great service to our people. It is also our hope that other coun ty papers will take up the idea here suggested through some per son in their community who is willing to give the necessary time and attention to this work. If but one paper in each county in the State were to give a column to this object, no one can tell the tremen dous good that would result in the course of a year. No fixed program has been laid out as yet. The end in view however, is perfectly clear. We expect to show, from time to time, how others are solving prob lems, affecting the very life and existence of the community, and how the solution can be applied to local conditions. Many people who would like to know, if they could find it in brief space, what great dailies, the magazines, and the scientific journals have to say on certain vital topics of health and social conditions, will find this col umn to meet that need. The great warfare that faces us today is that against disease, and the triumph of the coming generation will be the triumph to a great degree over that enemy. Individuals and commu nities are now engaged in a death conflict with all that is unclean. Cleaner living that is the cry whenever man realizes that he is more than beast, that he is divine. If you find anything good in this column from week to week, tell your neighbor about it. When you have a good thing, pass it along. I. T. W. RH. L. HOW'S THIS? Items ol Interest Gathered by Oilr Regular Correspondent. (Cor. to the lioAsoKit Nkb.) Halifax, N. C, Jan. 3. The Christmas season here has been quiet, but very enjoyable. The influx of "home - comers" and friends coming from different parts of the State, and other States as well, has tended to increase the pleasure and happiness of many, and doubtless the pleasure experi enced by so many of us, will be a thing of the past to which we will delight to revert. On Monday evening, Dec. 27th, the doors of th;1 hospitable home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Gowan were thrown wide and invited guests to the number of about one hundred, enjoyed ihe full measure of their hospitality. There were many out of town guests. On Thursday evening. Dec. 30ih, ai Campbell's Hall, under the man agement of Mrs. Travis, Mrs. Hale, Mrs. Brown, and others, there was a "Box Party," which I was made a very enjoyable affair, j The management realized a neat little sum, while the participants seemed 10 derive a great deal of ! satisfaction and pleasure. Below are a partial list of visitors here during the holidays, who brought good cheer and sunshine with them : Mr. Swain Norman, of Warren ton, has been here several days with his people. Mr. H. B. Furgerson, Jr., spent the holidays with his parents, re turning to the University Sunday. Miss Virginia Hale spent the holidays wiih her people. On Friday evening at the resi dence of Mr. and Mrs. Harry W. Gowan, many spent the time very pleasantly. A "Tackey Party" is about one of the most laughable things to be sure, and this one was no exception to the rule. The judges, as usual, had trouble in deciding who really deserved the prizes, but finally awarded the gentleman prizes to Messrs. S. M. Gary-andWallace Patterson. The ladies receiving prizes being Mrs. E. L. Travis and Miss Elizabeth Fenner. Lucious fruits were en joyed, and all seemed to enjoy the evening well. W. F. C. Lee Sing, a prosperous Chinese truck farmer near Wilmington, started a divorce suit against his mulatto wife, charging her wiih bigamy and infidelity. There are more white prisoners in the Wayne county jail just now than there are colored, which is something out of the ordinary for this section of the State. Steps have been taken by Ernest T. Sternerson, of Charlotte, look ing to the formal institution of a suit for $50,000 against his Father-in-law, Major J. A. The Supreme court, which meets again January 6, has filed several opinions in near beer cases, and in one from Union county, reverses the court below and holds that a sheriff cannot refuse to issue a license to sell near beer. In an other decision the court has held that a city or town can put any tax desired on near beer. Some places made this tax $1,000 and oihers have since the decision increased it to that figure.
