FERTILIZERS AND THE HOME GARDEN. The Last of a Senna of Six Articles. A farmer that we used to know quite well always put cj bis narden nlui sack of guano and three or four loaJs of stable and other kinds ot barn yard manure. Ills garden covered about unelifth of an acre, and was good land to begin with. In fact, he bad selected a noud, rich unit of ground for his garden. The fertilizer he applied amounted to a thousand pounds per aire, and the barnyard manure to about seven or einlu tons, in course, he fcrew a good garden, as most people d.i, and yet he otien wondered wh his garden was so much tetter than other parts of his tarm. lie was a t:ood farmer and made plenty of everything, and to spare, lie knew thai he made liberal applications of fertilisers and manures to his garden, bill . never yuite willing to acknowledge that these made all the difference in tin- yields. Our gardens are usually the richest uols on the I'uiui, Ituil are so i.ul be i'auke we make them so by fertilisation and cultivation. Kvery acre in ine aterage lanu could be made just as rich if we tried to mane il so. We do not consider sufficiently the factors which make rertile land, lie do nut fctrive to do Intensive farming, but rather make it as extensive as our acres will allow. When we wish to make an additional bale ot cotton, or bushel ol corn, wa take in more land instead ot enriching what is already under cultiva tion. I)r. L. H. Bailey has given In his book, ' The Principles of Vegetable Garden ing," some valuable suggestions on the use of commercial fertilizers. "The kind and amount of fertilizers," be savn, "are lo be determined by several circumstances: (1) The earliness or quickness with which the crop is to be obtained; (J) the Intensity of the operations to which the man is committed; (3) the character of the land as rewards tilth and texture; (4i the character of the iand as regards richness In plant food; the kind or species ot crops to be raised." Whatever the condition of the land or the nature of the crop, it must be fertilized If the gardener meets with success. Competition in the truck-growing business can be met in no other way ihan b liberally fertillr lng the ground on which the crops grow. Ur. Halley has wisely said that fertilizers must be applied in excess ol Hie actual needs of the plants It is impossible to distribute a very small quantity of fertilizers over a larce area. Vegetables are such rapid growing plants that one need not tear thai much of the fertiliser will leach out through the .-oil on account of lain. If It Is applied close to or la the drill tow, all ot it should be saved. The plants will absorb It before It gets awa. The formula generally recommend ed consists of a complete fertiliser, though ihe acid phosphate and nitrogen should come from different sources, eeii In the same fertiliser applied ai any given time. The mature fur gardens should be composed of as many kinds of Ingredients as possible, carrying Ihe three fundamental elements of plant food potash, nitrogen and phosphoric acid. Voorhees recommends heavy applications of such mixtures lo the com mercial gardens and tu truck patches, lie says I, to .". t'o.. pounds per acre of such mixture should te applied to asparacus, and as intieli lo beets and turnips; less than that to peas and beans. With any amount an after applica tlon has been found protliable This I- souo-iitues , ailed the second applica tion, which Is nut griierully a complete rerun .-i but i- compost, I ot nitnnten, or one of the other elements alone. The -found application of feilili. crs may be composed of ammonia and at id, or other turunda io ult Ihe In, mediate crop. (larden vegetables need large applications of fertili.er becaue any i hei k In their growth produces. Inferiority in quality. it is s itl by Dr. .Halley thai any delay In the groth ot loiime or radishes will generally cause a pungent tlavnr or sharp ta-le that Is undesir able. It rut down Ihe market value. The way to remove any cause for this Is tu fertilize well and properly and then cultivate. The turnip is made very Inferior when there Is a chei k In growth. Ihe vegetables thai are thus stunt ed seem to revert to ihe original type from lib Ii ihev were derived, especial ly with regard tn lasle, and hence should be t art-fully looked after In regard to fertilization and cultivation Fertilizers should be applied lo Ihe vege table garden as early after the spring breaking as poy.sible, as the soil ought to be saturated with rich plant food before the plants begin to grow very much. Then they will grow much more rapidly and majte far better vege tables. The second application should be made about the time the young plants are half grown. This Is as definite as a statement regarding this practice can be made. For all prize crops, a third and lourth application Is made, and with telling effects. No one can deny that Ihe vegetable garden Is the one place In which large dividends can be made from the use of com- ftiarelal frt1Hvar SAFER SCHOOL BUILDING ADDITIONAL STATEMENTS RE GAROINQ BETTER AND SAFER SCHOOL BUILDINGS. Csmmlsalentr Young Mkes Some Timely Suggettioni Concerning thi Building and Remodtling of School Buildings. Tbe statements in the pamphlet referred to show conclu sively tbat It will be cheaper In the end to erect school buildings of a bet ter class, to say nothing of their safe ty. Tha difference In the cost will be overcome In a few years by the small er depreciation and lesa call for re pairs on tbe building, as well as the aavlng In Insurance premiums. 2. Tba question of safer school buildings Is of vary great Importance and one that cannot he overlooked, If our school authorities are to come up to Ihe full meusure of their duly in safeguarding tba children committed to them. There are two divisions of tha work: (1) one tha erection ot safe buildings, and tba other (2) tha mak ing of such changes In tha buildings already erected and In use as will render them sat tor occupancy. Tha erwtion of safer buildings will , of cnurse, only coma up as new buildings art proposed, but tha making of tha present buildings aafa faeaa us each day anal calls far prompt action In every city, town and aehool dlatrlst of tha State. I Tha use ot Double Tower Stair ways la practicable not only In tba erection ot new buildings, but in mak ing our pracant buildings aafa. The rea son for this Is. they do away with the ' smoke panic." as well as the "rapidly spreading lire." by cutting out all In side stairways and openings between the different floors. 5. That the use of Double Tower Stairways does not add to but lesnens tbe cost of school buildings Is an addi tional reason for their use.
