New England girls would like to know if the government proposes lo insure the Yankee boys in South' ern training camps against the perils of the old-fashioned ham mock and the shady piazza. Bos tno Transcript. Come ahead brethren, but you will have to take your chances. Speaking at a public demon stration by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks on Bos ton Common, Senator Lewis, of Illinois, declared that every dollar of America and every American had rallied to the colors in the war gainst German oppresion. "The hour knows no excuse," he said. "Had Prussia," Mr. Lewis said, "overcome France and Russia, then beaten Britain, she would hive captured the navies of the allies and bombarded every Amer ican coast city. "The test had to come. The issue between ihe one successful republican form of government and the one most powerful impe rial government was sure 10 be; both could not exist in supremacy in the tame sphere of activities and influence." The men of ihe air service are fertile inventors of new slang. One of their recent adupnons is spikebozzle" which Freely trans lated means to "do in." "Hickboo" is another express ive word, alleged to be derived from an Indian word meaning an eagle, and commonly used to ad vertise the fact that hostile aircraft are about. Occasionally Hickboo is applied to other imminent con ditions of a momentous nature, such as the expected arrival of persons of high importance who are likely to look for and make trouble. A "buzz" is the airman's term for an alarm or air raid warning. "Traps" is his word for ihe bombs and other ammuniiion which he carries, as well as for the photographic or map-making equipment of the observation planes. Any accident to a machine is a "crash" and an injured man is a "castaway" presumably merely a corruption of casualty. ADVERTISED LETTERS. The following is a list of tellers remain ing "uncalled for" in the Weldon postoffke : Henry H. Bond. Henderson Haliday. Euie Powell. Oscar Somerville. Persons calling for above letters will please say "advertised," giv ing date of advertising. D. T. Clark, P. M., Weldon, N. C July 16, 1917.
