In reviewing the past ;ii ihis Clirisimas lime there is much fur which wc cu 11 rejoice and at ilns season which opens the hearts of all we should 1101 fail lu cnier into the spirit of ihe day, and lei glad someness and good cheer conihine lo make il a gala season of hope, good will, and thankfulness. Il is said thai "lime increases our responsibilities but multiplies our compensations. " Truly ihis is so right now. VTiih our nation at peace, our armies having (ought a righteous and victorious warfare, are safe trom the awful destroying forces of an inhuman and relentless foe; the high seas open to the com merce of the world, the principles of food conservation having been so well taught and enforced thai a much dreaded famine has been averted, so that there is now looj tor the eater al home and abroad. Our people have learned many lessons of economy and self-denial, which, if put in praciice must re sult in phypical and maierial good. V('f have come lo our place among the nations of the earth, our leader sns at the head of the table; and still we are growing as we should trow, wiih an honest pride for what we are and what we have been and our hopes are high lor a permanent and enduring peace that will banish war and w ill jield lo lutnre generations a guirvnee of happiness and safeiy. Sull there are pninis ,n winch we have lost ground. In these hustling days ol rapid u in-.it and greater nerve strain we live too much by ihe clock lo enter as we should into the spirii of the season. Of all beautiful and noble conceptions generosity and thought for the poor and unfortunate hold first place. Jesus was born in a manger and was the champion of "them lhat haih not." He dispised not ihe lowly and humble but made them objects of His loving care. And so we if we would follow in ihe steps of Him whose birth we honor should seek out the surt'er- ing ones and by a word, a hand clasp, a pretty card with ihe sea son's greeting convey the idea of remembrance and give the knowl edge that "some one cares," and loo when necessary these can be supplemented by gifts of material comforts. Bui right here we have suffered again in the season becom ing commercialized. The habit of exchanging presents has become a burden and is otieo rcprehci-ihle. c to re ol ihe e are children material Sabbath . cm- ewe expe Ceive is not the spirit Master who gave all. afraid thai even the little are imbibing ihe idea of return e heard of a school icacher w ho in an effort to impress her class with the thought of the sentiment in giving pretty cards conveying a loving Christ mas greeting was told, "No, we want real presents, we don't wain any old cards." And so we should be warned at this point and teach our little ones the story of the Di vine precept, "It is more blessed lo give than lo receive." IaI us siand with a greater cour age for what we know is right and in all earnestness, b r.v our heads, open our hearts, lift our voices in true thankfulness for the hkssings we have had and ask for strength and courage and faithfulness for Ihe years lo come. Psalms 67. "Let the nations be glad and sing for joy : for thou shall judge righteously, and govern the nations upon earth. Lei the people praise Thee, O Ciod; lei all ihe people praise thee. Then shall the earth yield her increase; and God, even our own God shall bless us. God shall bless us; and all the ends ol the earth shall fear Him. Mr. William Josephson Writes an Interesting Letter to His Uncle, Mr. Henry l-'arber. In France, Nov. 9, 1918. Dear Lnci.k: Since w riting you last w e have done a little bit of hiking and riding ti e box cars. Possibly you see a picture of the Sammies being trans ported in them; but one has to rule them in older lo really appre ciate it To begin w ith they are about our ball the sie ol a regular 11 ': nuke, aiul are marked "36 40 1 1 H iims" or "S C.hevaux" wli Ji ni;,iiis in our lingo ".lti-40 men" or "S horses." I liked some iweniy kiloim vi - (about 15 American miles) over some pretty gooj ro.iils, hut as it rams here mnsi every other day, il w as very imicli mud and re il sticky all the way. Had on our fu'l packs which means about 50 pounds extra tonnage. Made il all right, though al limes could ! hardly keep on my feel. Uight now we are on a pretty lively front, at a place lhat has withstood all thedtrman bombard ment, though they have been una ble to lake the place. The place has stood Hrm in ihe hands of ihe I French, where the Germans had ; to stop in ihe firsi famous drive in the early pari of the war. Our company has taken over two dressing stations, here is where all the wounded are brought to. when taken off' ihe Held. 1 am in one, Mike is in the other, which is about a mile away. Am going over to see him this evening. We are still in the same company, bul as w c serve two dressing stations, our company is divided in iwo parts, hall in each place. I've al ready been initiated into this work. Vl'as on the tirst real case this morning. Had to go out ihis morn ing to get a man. Weill through all kinds of trenches and barbed wire, into a dug out lo get him. Then had to carry him out on a litter or stretcher as you call it, to the ambulance, which was unable lo go up to him. I suppose it might interest you to know that we are living in dug outs now. I sure do wish thai you could inspect one. We're getting to be some real cave dwell ers, but of the twentieth-century method. Some are fixed up like a real Hat, and we are in one that's real comfortable. It's covered with sione and steel thai is said will turn a six-inch shell, and be lieve me we need them in this sec lion. We had a good bit of real news brought to us a few minutes ago, thai our Division has had their first experience ol going over ihe lop, going over like real veterans, gain ing over 7 kilos. This is consid ered remarkable, in view of the fact that we are supposed to be oiny noiiiing uown me trout, as Ihe place is lull of swamps and real marshy, deep enough lo cover a man, making u almost impossible to bring up ihe artillery in order to back up the infantry. l:or without tiie big guns in use for throwing a heavy barrage and high explosives the doughboys could not make any advance. On the oilier hand we've been expecting them to make an ad vance, for beginning with last evening, all through ihe night and all day today, without even a mo ment's let up, the artillery has been tiring continuously. Am now used to it, go to bed and sleep all right without being bothered by them. We've been giving ihem more than 25 shells to every one ihe Germans have fired against us. Presume that ihey know what is best for ihem, and are getting nut of the range of our guns. We are a good distance from any town. As all the towns are being continually bombarded, there are no stores in them. I haven't seen a civilian for over 10 days. All the people have gone out of the reach of all the hell fire. Sincerely, your nephew, Private W.m. Josephson. Christmas has called and 1 want to go home Christmas has w hispered and out through the night There's something thai beckons to us who must roam Par from the berries of scarlet and white; There's something thai beckons and ou: on the road We follow ihe way of a dream lhat is old, And weary the traveler and heavy the load Of those who may never turn back to the fold. Christmas has called and I want to go back Back through the years 10 a day that 1 know Over the trail of a dream-woven track lino the heart of ihe Longtime Ago. Where scarlet and white from ihe gray walls above The holly twined in with the mistletoe bough, And all of us met in a circle of love -I want lo go home 1 wain to go now. I waul lo go home lo the day where at dawn A tow headed youngster rushed forth with a whoop At ihe clarion call of the Little Tin I lorn And ihe roll ol the drum as it summoned the troop Ol ihe tin-soldiered legion w ill) muskets it-gleam, Seined and straight in an unbroken row I wanl to go back where a fellow can dream Of Clirisimas like that in the Lung lime Ago.
