Before another isue f the E.nqcik rechefl our readers the die wib htiv beer, ca-t, th p-ople of North Carolina will have spoken, aud it will hnvtj been settled, as far as our State is concerned, Mother there Bhall be constitutional liberty and honest gov ernment amoug us, or a break-dowu of the spirit of the reople and a sur-ren'l-r of ail hop-- for several Years t: come, of any iprovomeat in tho r..anageLant ot our public aflkirs. We feel conscious, when we apeak of the losa of liberty to a large por tion of our people, that c-xtett i no: appreciated. The tyrant hue not come with one fell swoop to the terror and atonuhment of the people, but he haa made hia approaches step by step, little by Utde, until in many rJ apecta American freedom is a myth. We do not pretend that there is no liberty enjoyed among ue, but we do cay, that if the things that are now common with ua had been done twen ty years ago, our nation would have be. a convulsed with mdignation, and an uprising of the people would have hurled from power tbo officer who would have sanctioned them. A man, who, in establishing his p rson al government, seems to assume to bimxlf the prarogattTt cltimad by Louis XIV, u I am the state." Such is th ooadition of our national gov ernment, which haa gone an from bad to worse, until we may well fear, that, if it is not arrested, the time will soon come when republican institutions in this country which bare been so fond ly cherished by oar people as a heri tage bought with our fathers' blood, will only be a matter of history. The conditio of affairs in our own State is also each as to iwakan in us the most anxious solicitude Vice and ignorance have had sway over us for the last ux years, until North Carolina has been brought to the virge of ruin ; our laws haveybeen vi olated, our people outrajred' and the financial credit of our State destroy -ed. The Kirk war is still remember ed, the outrages of U. 8. Mar shals are constantly before us, and the infamous acts of our Executive, Judi-c-ary and Legislative department have been such aa to strike terror t the heaxta of all true liberty-lovers, and to cause us to blush with shame, were we not conscious that we, the true people of the 8tateywere not the authors of the evil. Now who has brought this bad es tate upon our nation and 8tate ? It is the work of Radicalism, the evil genius of Grantiam. Will our peo ple longer submit to it ? Will they lie ffrrpirply and eo their liborti e trampled and power usurped that be longs to them ? Forbid Heaven. North Carolina is to strike the first blow that is to redeem the country. Her history in the past haa been , J v glorious; upon her soil American lib- j 0 ' r erty waa born, and her eons, in the council chambers and upon the bloody battle fields, have been iu stout de fenders, and the same old spirit yet j aurriTe.
