Parent* should endeavor to fos ter the natural desire possessed by * almost all children, to have pets of some kind, for tho influence on the minds of tne young is very benefi cial in many ways. The natural activity, of both* mind and body, of child hold most have something to expend its aorplos steam on; tf ef forts are not made by the parents, to direct it in good, useful and de i suable channels, it will often be productive of evil fruit Teach the Brys to, stay home during their leisure hours; that no place offers the same real aatisfying enjoyments that home offers; that parents are at all times ready and willing to contribute to their pleasures to the extent of their ability, and yon, parents, will not. have any cause, in after life, to complain of the reetle nees and want of love of home too often manifested by hundred of the young men to day. Money laid ont in a few pets for the little ones is . well spent as it does not require a very lavish outlay to secure a nice 1 pair oT rabbits.' a couple of pair of nice pigeons, a couple of Guinea Pigs or some white mice, or other pets, and you will feel amply re paid for your expenditure in notin 1 ing the gleams of sasisfaction and - pleasure which light up the faces of your litte ones when they find they really ’own’ them, while they are all the time learning habits of usefulness when regularly contri buting to and eaoplying the pets with food and attention. We are heartily sick of hearing men say that because times are . bard women should not wear fashion able trimmed dresses. Now, the fact is. that these very men either . throw away or spend for useless trifles more money every month than It takes to dress their wives and daughters. And then, if wo men ol means do not dress well what is to become of the poor wo man who sew for living.and support helpless children on the much abused ruffles and puffs and flounces ’ represent? Tne proper thing for |>eop!e of means to do is to live as liberally as their incomes will per ' mit, for neither men nor women will have pockets in their shrouds, and life nt best is short.. If this were generally done, newspapers would have less frequently to record instances.of avarice and hard heart edness. and there would lie less suf fering ainoag working people. Let it be remembered that goods are cheap, anil dress-making corre spondingly reasonable. And let it not be forgotten that tbis world Would be hideously ugly if it were not for the well dressed women who inhabit it.—Richmond Whig. ■A Yodw Lady's Heath Fnut Git tar.—Alfred Garther and Kicb ard Smith, both tout of highly re spected and -well to-do gentlemen, were detected, a few days ago, in counterfeiting silver money. - Tuey had obtained moulds and other necessary articles, and began tbe .manufacture of., nxcsllout^countet. feits made of Babbitt metal,' block tin and lead. Taey operated in a secret .spot, and bad bent much of the spurious coin abroad be lore they were delected. Garther was en gaged to be married to Miss Laura Hartley, a beautiful and refined girl living inttie neighborhood. His arrest proved such a shock to her nervous -system that aba was seised with an i«i»ifiv v» wtesb. vis* dv^fevb-s. next day. Her lover and his com panion are in jail.—Solatia (J/o.) Time*. How Cam Tut Help it.—There is ■ sort of •‘goodness" which is brought out by- the sunshine- of prosperity.
