Tired and hungry in ton evening , twilight or an autumn day, be name in sight of a bouse at which be bad often stopped, and Lo which be bad travelled several miles more than bia usual day's journey. The roly occnpants of the bouse were a father and a daughter, who was bis housekeeper. ’ When she saw Dow coming she. ran to meet him, . and demonstrated by her looks and words the joy she felt. While she was preparing supper she told bun that her father had gone to a barn raising and would not return until midnight, and detailed to him the the happenings in the neighbor hood since his last visit. After the supper they were joined by a young man, whom site introduced to Dow as tier future husband, if they could obtain her f‘tiler's consent; which at that time was not very probable, as he wan bitterly opposed to the union. They both urged Dow Ui use all his influence with thefathei to obtain bis consent, which he pro mised to do. The house; as many were at that time, was only one story high, and irom the ceiling, which was made by laying loose 'slabs on the timbet used as joist, to the roofwascalled the loft. As Jihere -was only .one room down stairs, a bed was made on the floor of the Jolt.for Dow, u which he retired after praying with the vouug couple. He had not been in| bed long before ho beard loud knocking on the door ami commotion down stairs.- By look ing through between two slabs he saw the girl trying to. force the young man up-stairs, but be would not go; she then told him to get in a tow box tnat stood in the comer, and be did. - Then she opened the door, and her fattier entered. He was considerably nnlerthe influ ence of liquor, and in very bad hu mor because "be had been kept wait ing so long. The girl told him lie must keep quiet, as their old friend Lerenzo Dow was in bed inttie loft, and said Ur ought to go up and see him; but the father was sensible enough to know that his head whs too heavy to admit of Ids ascending an almost perpendicular ladder, and did not make the attempt. Dow, ^who I aif seen and beard all that passed below; decended the stairs. The father ..received Dow at "the "foot of the ladder with cordial gree tings, and insisted on him taking some .supper with him, hnt Dow re fused, a- he already had supper. Alter he had concluded hit meal, he said i "Mr. Dow, I have often beard that you can raise tlie devil, and I made up my mind that if you ever came back to my hbuse I would get you to do it." Dow protests, 1 that be - eould do uo such thing, but the man insisted that lie cool i aud should. After delibera ting a short time, Dow said : “If I most.I will; hut it is sorely against my will. tVben he appears he will Ifcave aetreak-.eif &re - behind him*#* yon 'must get water to put it out. otherwise it may burn the honsc." All preparations were made, Dow •took in his hand the only light in the room, and. after telling the girl to open the door and her'father to stand back in the couoer, he set on V“}e some oftbs tow that prolru ded through an open space in tbs. box, and said in a loud voice,“Tlion *mp of Satan, leave, this bouse until $fyd thee return.” The youug man was sharp enough to know that Dow was getting him 6qt of a bad iiirSpe, ~kod seising* sowe* tew" iw each band, which be held up to his face, be sprang oat or-the box and oat of the door. After- be was ^ gone the girl audJDow—the /ather. being..parai*zed with fear—put out, ' the fire. Sow remained several' - da/a, -md during the time tbe in . quiries "be made about the young man were answered so mneb to bis aatisfaction that he urged the fath er; to consent to tbe marriage and . he did. . ’ Dow bad the -pleasure of - pro nonncing the couple husband and .wile before bis departure.
