N6H37: Augusta Railroad -in. this city were in formed yesterday evening by a circular from the General Superintendent that the machinery and transportation depart ments of the two roads had been consoli dated. Mr. Thomas Anderson -who has heretofore acted .only iu the j capacit jr of Master of Transportation, now has con trol of both departments. The crew informed me that they . will realize 35 barrels of oil arid a good quant ity of good whalebone. All will net them $700. Three very large whales passed the inlet last week. She is a worthy lady as we can testify from our own knowledge and any assistance rendered her in the way re quested will be highly appreciated. Historical and Scientific Society. The members and invited guests of this Society will bear iu mind that the regular monthly meeting will take .place ou Mon day night, March 5th, at '8 o'clock, in tlia Lectnre Room of the First Presbyterian ! Church. . A full attendance is desired, as an in teresting historical paper will be read and illustrated, and-also some important busi ness will no doubt be transacted. ' Suspension of the Journal. A. Lover of Bivalves. A lew days ago a youth of about nine teen summers, 1hailing from Rocky Point, sauntering through the market hcuso,cspied some very fine '.New , River oysters and accosted the dealer with, "What will yon charge for as many of them as I can eat?" The dealer replied "twenty-five cents," thinking the young man could not eat pore than one quart. The quart was handed over and the young "man ate three quarts and a pint before his appetite for the bi valves was sxtiatod. The dealer as well as some dozen witnesses were dumfouod- ed at the quantity of oysters consumed by "the young man from the country." The "market house brotherhood'' has re solved to deal with all such applicants on the plan of the Scale House of Philadel phia' that is weigh the applicant before and after eating. Some of the prettiest beef we have seen in many days was hanging - this morning in front of Mr. Sellers meat shop, corner Fourth and Mulberry streets.
